Hard to believe you found Ren and Sam 3 years ago, while it seems most of the rest of us have just found them in the last couple of months. We're late, but we finally got there!!
Ren blew up because of his rap music that came later and now having HUGE success. But in the process people are deep diving into his music and discovering his other busking and more musical, non rap side - not that his rap music isn’t very much musical - and loving it too. I’m all here for it!
Here in these busking sessions Sam was the breakout star here. It’s the soul and his high range with all the crazy high notes. While that’s great and I love him as an artist I was initially drawn more to Ren as I generally prefer more deep tones and he’s got it, along with the soul. Plus the guitar playing is amazing too. If those who discovered Ren through his rap music instead discovered him through these busking sessions they may prefer Sam. But because of REN’s rap music they are finding these and preferring Ren too. No hate at all to Sam, but it’s cool to see people prefer the underdog here like I do even though he is now WAY more of an overdog. He made something with his rap music that really connects with today’s generation that through doing so has made more people connect with his non rap music. Love it! Now go do a deep dive on Sam Thompkins too. He deserves just as much love and success.

Listen to Ren’s songs Money Game, Screech, and Jenny’s tale. He is a true storyteller. Not sure about Sam but I know Ren was picked up by Sony a while back but due to health problems he actually dropped it. I believe only recently has he got back into music.

Ren has been through so much with his health. Pretty much bedridden for 8 years. He is so kind and grateful for everything he has. He deserves every success in life.

Thank you for this reaction! It is so affirming that you saw how great these two were back 3 years ago, a time before many reactors had even discovered Ren! This is one of my favorite live performances of Ren and Sam Tompkins. They are both superstars now, with Ren Amazing us with his bass, guitar, piano, lyrics And voice on so many varied fine originals as well as cover remixes that will definitely impress you. I've been slowly going through all of your video reactions and am hoping I will find many more to Ren and to Ren + other collaborators as well as to Ren's band, The Big Push. Same song, Very Different take, shot by the astounding videographer, Samuel Perry Falvey who has been Ren's good friend for at least 15 years. Samuel is an amazing, one-shot, Top tier videographer and the fun the three had shooting in the carpark is Wonderful to see and feel. I guarantee you will be entertained! 💜

These are two seperate performers who perform together now and again. Ren in his own right did have a deal with Sony I believe however due to poor health had to concentrate on getting better and had to step away from the deal. Please, please, please watch more of Ren's own written music. I was told to watch him by a friend and hey I'm hooked, absolutely brilliant, talented individual and well really should say individuals, Sam Tompkins blows me away too.
If I ever won the lottery I’d set up a music production company just to make people hear these guys. Talent doesn’t even comprehend a word to explain this talent! Crazy! They could be so famous, but appreciate their reason not going commercial, guys write songs you’ll be famous as fuck!!!!!

In terms of individual performances I really recommend Chris Sheehy - Leave Me Alone Live at The Open Sessions. It has really few views but it is one of the best one man performances I've seen on youtube.
Sam's a bit of a one trick pony, for me. He does that trick really well but it's all he does, over and over. It's the type of thing you hear on tv talent shows all the time. Good but nothing special. It doesn't hold my attention for long. Ren, on ther other hand, is one of a kind, vocally, as well as in all his other musical talents.
Why should people shoot for commercial success and hope for it, rather then simple pure creation? Its possible that i am misunderstanding what you mean, ill paraphrase multiple authors and peots "you are an artist when you wake up and must (not should or anything but a neccesity) create.
Interesting that you acknowledge that most of the current music that you are familiar with is pretty mediocre; while at the same time you keep asking if they have had any commercial success and why you haven’t heard of them. 😂
Sam Tompkins has an incredible voice, a lot of talent, but he goes off-key trying to play his voice in a totally unnecessary way, he also tries to reach VERY high notes that he knows he can't reach, even with the range he handles. If he did less, it would be much better. And Ren is super talented too, I would like to see different things from him, it's quite repetitive.
They both go off-key quite frequently. But I guess it's expected, knowing that they are singing 3 octaves pretty much every single note on any scale they are playing in.
