In this case the lyrics ARE important, he's questioning his mother's faith in a Christ who would let her suffer ill health for so long, how she never gave up her faith.
I also heard in an interview with Maynard once that many people in his mother's church were cruel to her saying that her stroke was punishment for her sins. Maynard clearly took issue with this considering his mother was a very devout Christian her entire life. This is heavy stuff and I agree you all should react to Wings for Marie pt 1 and 10,000!
Should have done it with the lyrics and with the backstory to explain the lyrics. This is a very powerful, personal and emotional song. Maynard's mom (Judith) had a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair and had other health problems for much of her adult life. She was a very devout Christian and this song is questioning how she could keep her faith under such circumstances....God giving her an existence like that. Very important song.
The song isn't about her faith. The song is about the idiots in the church who told her her lack of faith was the reason she had a stroke and how horrible a Christian she was because of it.
Good reacting guys so technically this is just Maynard second band he owns 3 bands TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. This song Judith is about Maynard’s mother who suffered a stroke and left her paralyzed for 27 years since Maynard was in his middle school year but she believed in Christianity and Maynard saw this so ironic and that’s why he wrote the song sadly so passed away on 2003. Also 27 years equals 10,000 days which is another good song to react with Wings for Marie. Please react to Wings for Marie and 10,000 days you guys love it even more 😁✌🏽
Joe Paduch your right I can probably figure it out. But since these days we want to dissect everything said, people automatically put the singer as the leader of the band. But this person goes one step further. OWN the band? How do the other band members feel about being owned lol
HWED Hotwheel-Ed he is basically the leader of the band of you didn’t notice he formed them himself I just wrote that to let you know he is the leader of the 3 band’s I ain’t trying to say like he own them like “owns” but I understand your point and thanks for understanding ✌🏽
To answer your question, yes, A Perfect Circle is still active. Their last album was 2018 and they still tour sporadically. Also, the male backup singer is Billy Howerdel. He's also the lead guitarist and only constant member, other than Maynard. He was a guitar tech for such bands as Faith No More, Fishbone, David Bowie, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Guns N' Roses, and Tool. When he worked for Tool, he played Maynard some of his songs and told him of his intention to start a band. Maynard liked what he heard and volunteered to be the vocalist figuring it would give him something to do while he waited for the rest of Tool to go through their arduous writing process. Billy's also got a second band, Ashes Divide, which he played everything himself except for drums on their single studio album.
Billy wanted a feminine touch to apc but tried Maynard at that time because jmk insisted he had the voice Billywas after...he ended up working for the band.
One of the best atheist/agnostic freethinking skeptic songs ever created. It is a powerful critique of Christian theology...specifically the idea of atonement.
So which category do you think Wings for Marie belongs to then? Btw what's so atheistic or agnostic about the line "He did this"? Since you mentioned free thinking, let's do some thinking actually.
Srki Zen - Funny how you put it. Yes...He did this to you as the "all benevolent" God of the universe. It is a based on the same line of thinking as the Philosopher Epicurus concerning evil and suffering. Theodicy. The song is complaining that how could your God be all loving if He allows or ordains this depth of human suffering. Look at the verse in context again please, "He did this. Took all you had and Left you this way" and this is his defense for the statement in the previous line," How the savior has abandoned you. Fuck your God, Your Lord...and your Christ!" As for Wings for Marie...It is much more poetic in its symbolism not as straightforward lyrically as Judith. I'm not saying that Maynard James Keenan is not spiritual in some sense of the word but he is a million miles away from any kind of traditional theism. I stand by y statement that Judith is a scathing critique of Christian theology. His irreverence towards it is littered all throughout his musical career, and public statements. Long live Rock!!! It is one of the world's greatest artforms. And yes pushing thought (free thought) forward at the edges of polite society.
@@joshuadanielrocks I agree it is criticism, however, I cannot agree that the wording he uses is either atheistic or agnostic. Also, don't forget he criticises her as well for not giving up on her faith, but he still loved her. Criticism is not equal to hate, rejection or disbelief.
Billy Howerdel the lead guitarist actually did the heavier backing vocals on the song. He sings in a band Ashes Divide which is basically like APC without Maynard. His vocals sound pretty close to maynards IMO so it blends pretty well, when I first heard Judith I thought Maynard did all the vocals on it. The song is about his mother never questioning her faith when she was left paralyzed for many years
This is about his mom Judith Marie. As a child who lost both his parents horrifically....just understand our pov. We are the lost orphans trying to understand the world. And, yeah, we are frustrated, but we believe in peace.
This song is a part of a trio of songs Maynard wrote about his mom who was paralyzed for 27 years (10,000 days or so). A Perfect Circle - Judith (angry Maynard, with your faith why did they break you?) and Tool Wings for Marie parts 1 & 2 (about his mom's death and how she better get her wings!). So if you want to, do Wings p1 and 2 next to get the whole story!
There's also songs like Jimmy by Tool and Orestes by APC that seem to be referencing his mom as well. But they should definitely check out the Wings For Marie tracks (combined as they ought to be).
I'd include The Outsider from APC as well as Jimmy from Tool, seem to be a theme of his troubling and emotional relationship with his mother, Judith Marie
Request: If you were gonna do one of your lyrical analysis dives, this would be the song for it. I’d be especially interested in hearing y’all’s reaction to the lyrics here after watching your talk about whether rock is the devil’s music. Love y’all. Keep up the great reactions!
Just stumbled on this video: so this song is about his mom Judith who had a stroke and was paralyzed. Her church told her it happened because she wasn't a good enough christian
Aside from this being an amazing song, I really love the video. It's almost like an middle finger to music videos in general. It's them with their instruments in a barren place. Makes you focus on the music rather than images
"You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be." I listened to "Judith" musically like you did for years until I started hearing the lyrics. That first line. Knowing it's his Mom. The layers. Maynard unbearing anger, love, torment.
When you react to MJK songs you should definitely check the lyrics. Always a story and a message. As far as the screaming/growling, it’s a needed effect to show the anger and confusion in the song. Now that you have the backstory from the comments, DEFINITELY do the lyric video of Wings for Marie/ 10,000 Days. Those are the understanding and acceptance parts of his mourning process. Also “Jimmy” kind of starts the whole thing off in the story chronologically. This is by far the most aggressive song of the saga.
This song is about his mother Judith who suffered from an aneurysm and was handicapped for the rest of her life. Maynard was angry with her devotion to religion.
One of the best rock videos ever produced in my opinion. Directed by David Fincher of Fight Club fame. Lots of great touches, but my favorite is watching Paz throw her hair up just in time to pluck the pick from her teeth and start sawing away her base.
Tool - Jimmy, A Perfect Circle _ Judith , Tool - Patient, Tool Wings for Marie (pt 1) , Tool _ 10000 Days ( Wings for Marie pt 2) to get the whole story IMO
Most reaction videos, people can't stfu and stop overreacting. Ya'll listened and let it ride through your own ups and downs of wondering what was happening. Respect.
You’re close but no cigar....Maynard did not start the band, he was brought in by Billy Howerdel, who in fact started the band. Billy worked on music and Maynard worked on Lyrics. As for your question of do they still perform together, yes they do when Maynard has time to allow.
Check out the the song Polar Bear by his 3rd band Puscifer definitely showcases his voice! By the way new to your channel love the tunes these guys have you on!
The lyrics are a big deal in this one. It's part of the Maynard's mom story. It's cool to compare an angry song like this about his mom, to the Tool songs "Wings For Marie" (parts 1 and 2), which are much more mournful about his mom.
I know this response is late, but I knew you were going to get bombarded with comments once you said that the song doesn't mean anything lol. NEVER think that when it comes to Maynard.
Hey, not sure if you’re wanting to go back to megadeth but my favorite album is Youthanasia..you should check out “Blood of Heroes” of that album because it’s one where daves voice is the highlight as opposed to the guitars
I cannot believe you guys have not done a reaction to the Sound of Silence by Disturbed!!!!!!!!!!! Here is them live on Conan O'Brien ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bk7RVw3I8eg.html
