This is the first time I disagree with you Kaia :( I actually think SM girl groups are the leaders in this type of production. SNSD: I Got A Boy, Express 999, Trick. F(x): Literally their entire discography, but this reminds me of Red Light and the Pink Tape album A.K.A The Bible of Kpop. Red Velvet: Zimzalabim and other Red side songs. SM boy groups did not start producing music like this until EXO and NCT. SM Girl Groups ARE THEIR OWN GANG. I get super protective of girl groups when they start getting compared to boy groups, because I feel its like continuing the narrative that they are somehow not at "boy group" level, whatever that means. ITZY's Ryujin recently spoke about how uncomfortable it makes her feel and im sure she isn't the only one.
To me it's both girls and boys. All the examples you mentioned + some older boy group songs: -Shinee's Sherlock (it's a smoother transition, but it is an actual mash-up of two songs) - TVXQ's Rising Sun, Triangle (with TRAX and Boa)
i got a boy had only one genre switch... and it worked well with the rest of the song (it was acutally one of my fav songs that got me into kpop when it came out) ...like hwasa's maria. it also had a very genre switch but it worked....this song is so good too. but it had so many genre-switches....didn't work for me...but it's just a taste and i'm pretty sure there are so many people that love it.
@@Kim-rw6tz I thought I'm the weird one! I got a boy did the switch around the bridge part but this one had it in the middle, and then switch and then switch back lmao. I got confused honestly. I think it will take time for me to get used to the song
@@jasmintecson2176 yeah... i saw most of the people are like us. it doesn't mean that we are hating on girls. they are talented and lovely. just this song is kinda weird and takes time to get used to it. ^^
@@Kim-rw6tz Actually, I Got a Boy has two genre switches, not just one. And Next Level also has two genre switches, the only difference is that Next Level switches one extra time more than IGAB, back to the previous genre.
I find it funny how people say it worked for the boy groups and then not for the girl group... If you say this song sounded like it had too many other songs in it and then enjoyed Resonance and One idk how to tell you this but its not the 'too many songs' sound you didn't enjoy, its simply the fact you aren't willing to give girl groups as much of a chance as you are boy groups when they do an experimental concept. We saw it with Itzy and were seeing it again now. Why are people so quick to push girl groups back in that box they made for them, but in the same breath so quick to praise boy groups for leaving that box. Just a thought
To me Exo and Red Velvet have some similarities - more melodic and R&B-ish while still experimental. Then Shinee, NCT and now AESPA have the 'SM sound' you're talking about (not saying there all the same but they're similar'.
Has been looping in my head since first listen. Good stuff, Aespa. I love the abrupt switch-ups in the song, and I think it's more accurate to describe it as something SM groups in general do rather than SM boy groups specifically. SNSD's I Got A Boy, EXO's Tempo, and RV's Zimzalabim are the songs I see brought up most often on the topic of SM musical whiplash, so it feels a bit misplaced to not credit ggs- to me at least. And I also have to recommend TVXQ's Tri-angle (feat. BoA & TRAX) if you haven't seen it yet. it's... a trip. Idk maybe it makes sense that abrupt turns are reminiscent of NCT and SuperM's music since they actually released music recently, whereas SM gg's are locked in the dungeon.
I honestly love this song sooooo much, the switch of it was really nice and hearing the vocal line vocals made my mouth drop and then the rap happened and I was just so amazed... I also really liked how it has the sm sound..
Girls Generation:I got a boy Red Velvet:Zimzalabim Aespa:Next Level They all have different mix ups... To me,Zimzalabim is the hardest to put up with...but i soon get addicted to it.....Next Level only took me one listen to get used to it....I got a boy was perfect on the first listen
@@KallenSC i mean those are opinions based on your preferences, the song is far from "bad" its just not what you're used to. musically its complex and really fun, but its not typical mainstream easy listening most fans like. this is contender for SOTY for me
@@KallenSC I’m completely opposite of you because Mafia In the morning is an absolute banger and I love Next Level lolol Also don’t imply that people can’t honestly like a song just because it isn’t your preference?
@@KallenSC I am 19 and I have been a Kpop fan since 2010. If you are wondering, yes I’m the type of person who likes experimental music (thus my love for SM music, Kpop in general, and music such as 100, Punch, Next Level etc) I know toxic fans exist but many equally nice fans exist as well who will respect your honest opinions. Who cares about what toxic fans have to say considering much of it is irrational? Why should toxic fans influence whether or not you genuinely like a song or not? If you like a song because you honestly like it, then you like it. If you don’t like a song and are honest about it, it’s okay. As long as you’re not disrespectful, otherwise you’re as bad as the toxic fans who rage when someone doesn’t like something. Ps, you should realize that people simply will have different tastes than you and genuinely like something you don’t prefer. And Mafia In the morning is still one of Itzy’s best title tracks aside from Wannabe IMO. I respect if you don’t like it or Next Level tho
@@KallenSC It's your preference. The production of this song is far from bad technically. It's just different and not what we used to see in kpop as no one is bold enough to try experimental music. I'm glad that SM and Aespa chose to be different. Because if you listened to some youtube video that they re-arrange this song to be more cohesive or ear pleasing, it's just generic and boring 😂 Experimental is way more interesting and tbh they are from SM, money is there fanbase is there, you can try as many thing as you want creatively and uniquely. Since there are abundantly generic music out there avaible for you, different is what stands out.
you know this song was not my cup of tea...like at all... but it is cool to dance with and get hyped. they all did a great job and are amazing. i'm pretty sure it will become a lot of people's fav. no mine. but still amazing song by beautiful talented girls.
I definitely have mixed feelings on this. First, I want to say the girls are amazing and super talented, and look stunning as well. As for the song though, I only really like the switch up part in the middle. I would have love to have a full song of that part instead of adding the repetitive Next Level song from the Fast and Furious soundtrack. Their vocals during that switch up part are fantastic and have always been the thing I like most about them. Idk if SM will ever go in the more vocal direction with their songs like I'd wish they would, but I'll always appreciate those parts in the song when they show up.
TBH I'm kinda torn on this song. Like it feels a bit all over the place with all the switches, it almost sounds like a cheerleading chant to me? BUT I can't deny it's hella catchy and it will be stuck in my head for a long time.
personally i can’t understand how anyone can Not like this song. when it came out my entire tl on twitter was miserable meanwhile i came back and was having the time of my life, i think it’s a great song and shows their charms well. had there not been a switch people would’ve said there weren’t enough vocal parts or that the song was too boring, but with the switch it’s too jarring and unfitting. to me the change was great, it happened just as we saw naevis and only during this portion and the outro did we see the girls turning into their ae version so from a storytelling/visualizing perspective it was an amazing choice. i’m honestly not listening to peoples opinion anymore because the number of times i’ve heard someone say a song was bad just to praise it to heaven a week later this year is off the charts.... to each their own but i guarantee in a week 90% of the people now saying they dislike the song will have changed their mind. good news is aespa hinted at a full album during their press conference today so i’m hoping for good news during july/august maybe!
Oh thank god, finally someone with taste! I loved this song on first listen and it's already one of my faves for 2021 but I've seen almost nothing but hate for it. The beat and the hook are so addicting. I agree with everything you said and can't help but wonder how different the reaction would be if this were a boy group song...I've also seen a lot of griping about the "talk singing" / rap focus of the song as if girl groups always have to put out vocal oriented tracks but boy groups can frequently show different sides of themselves?? Anyway, they look great, they sound great, and the song slaps. If I had one small complaint it's that I would've liked the MV to have a slightly more coherent story line and to maybe have included those cyberpunk looks from the teaser photos but SM loves to bait and switch with teasers. I won't pretend to be disappointed. Giselle is also my bias btw so it's nice to see her get the recognition she deserves!
I feel like this was such a Winter Era, her VOCALS and her rap wow. Also Giselle's visuals and her powerful rap killed me! I love her styling a lot of the time as well. And my bias Ningning added a spice to the song, spicy red hair, spicy killer rap style and spicy killer vocals (not to mention visuals). Karina is just so cool. No other way to say it, she is just super cool. Her styling was great and I love her "That's my Naevis" line. Stan Aespa.
I was worried at the first chorus but after Ning Ning’s vocal part before the switch up I was sold. After the crazy switch ups I actually really appreciate the simple eerie chorus
I loved the song, it’s funky in the best way possible ( : and Giselle is also my bias and she killleddd her parts, but all the girls were soooooo gooooooood
This would have made an excellent album medley highlight video, but as a song, it didn't work for me. Hope their future releases are more to my taste because I think they are all very talented.
@@zyehboi5835 No, why? cause the parts we heard the most is the part one. The part two and three we heard just a bits (?) Anf it's also not part of the chorus. So, it could still be a great songs..............
@@pratamaputra000 yeah that's the point,, if part 1 was instead the whole song the song would go super stale and repetitive.. and most people would get tired of it immediately.. plus this isn't the first time SM ent did multiple styles in a song,, snsd igab and exo tempo already existed way long before
i wish their avatars also changed appearance with the girls. Now only Karina matches her avatar when it comes to hair color. Obviously the girls can change their hair, but then the avatars should change too in my opinion unless with their whole lore and universe it makes sense why it doesn't match anymore. I don't know anything about the story so I wouldn't know. But from a casual viewer's standpoint it doesn't make sense anymore and it's harder to match the girls with their avatars if this is you first time seeing aespa
Thank you for the react! I feel like Aespa's music IS the concept. Like with their lyrics referring to their own universe (similar to how Exo has hints at their powers in certain videos (like Kai teleporting in "Mmmh"). They're not going to be dark or girlcrush (though they may be borderline girlcrush galactic) but it's more the music switches (genre, style, etc.) rather than the girls. It's all adapting.
honestly AESPA has yet to release a song that actually captivates me and sucks me in, not a fan of this song at all but i respect the girls time to shine in the song.
The mv is awesome, the girls are amazing but I did not like the song sadly, I do really love the part that comes after the "Beat Drop", that was epic. I got a boy is a song with switch ups that works for me, Zimzalabim and this one not so much :(
Aespa's my first sm group to stan so this was a whiplash to me but I enjoyed it and I can't have enough of it. Personally, I preferred this MV rather than Black Mamba, I love the production and the aesthetics. Although it was a remake, the girls did amazing and the part where they switch it up is my fave part cuz the rap was chef's kiss
It doesn't take much to appease the basic, average Kpop fans and it shows. I personally won't listen to this overproduced crap again and if you have any taste at all, you won't either.
I didnt enjoy this song as much as Black Mamba but still they do great, its nice they are all rounded idols can singe, dance, rap and have amazing presence and visuals. I really like these girls Im excited for the next drop and hope to be more of my taste. Btw Winter's high note , wdf ?? So good.
I agree with the fact that Red Velvet music feels like an entity of its own, and I would argue that is exactly what makes them stand out and have the most interesting discography, not only between SM groups but probably in K-pop as a whole. This song was interesting but if they wanted to take the experimental route, I would have preferred a full original song instead of a partial remake.
I understand what you're saying about aespa's songs being in line with SM's boygroup well especially NCT and Super M's. I blame it on the productions, same sounds but still different from one another. RV's definitely have a different musicality in their songs, the productions are more of the sounds that came from the 2nd gen and 3rd gen combine which I really enjoyed. While I enjoyed some of the new songs from SM's bg, its kinda hit or a miss to me. Lol must be the generation difference.
You represented me when I listened to 'Next Level' for the 1st time!!! It's so cool and fun to listen to, I love that it doesn't have a typical song structure, that's why I love SM, and my bias is also Giselle, confirmed with this comeback!!!
This song is like SNSD I Got A Boy, Red Velvet ZimZaLaBim, F(x) Nu ABo, so SM has done this type of song before with their girl groups. I don't know if they did with their first generation girl group though, it might have started early second gen and I love that they do these types of songs :)
SES did something similar with “Love [story]”, but that song is a remix of two of their classics so it probably doesn’t count. As for MILK, I’ve never heard any of their music so I’m not sure
@@bitch8205 Yeah, I'm not sure first generation since it was the start, they probably wanted to play it a bit safer :) Same I know who MIlk is but haven't heard much to really know. I think second gen is when SM felt they could really start experiment a bit more with the sound and concept :)
The song switch-up thing is actually very much an SM girl group thing looking at Zimzalabim, I Got a Boy and Red Light (but also don't mess up my tempo and Why So Serious have a similar rhapsody feeling to them as well)
i think why you think of sm's boy group thing is bcause, it has been a while since we see this kind of music among their girls. the last was zimzalabim and then back to back with the nct and superm.
That beats on the switching part (after 'beat drop') reminds me so much of Growl from EXO. I love that part the most. but let's be real, the phrase 'I'm on the next level' is so catchy that even you hate it you will always hum along with it.
I love this song (it made Winter my bias for one) but for some reason, I can't shake it reminding me of Totally Spies and other cartoons like that :D (in a good way)
It's not relatable lyric wise, because that's not the point of the song, The goal it's to continue with their universe and concept that they did in Black Mamba.
