Reaction to BABYMETAL 'DEATH' and 'BxMxC' (LIVE) 

It's a play on words with 'death' and 'desu' (u is silent so it sounds similar). A name+desu means 'I am name'. In the song for example they sing 'Su-metal desu, Yui-metal desu, Moa-metal desu, Babymetal desu', because this song is basically their opening/intro song and also the first song on their first album.

1997 is Su-Metal's birth year. She is the metal goddess.

Excellent reactions again. They only crucify Su-metal on special occasions - this was the day after her 16th birthday. When they did it for her 20th birthday in her home town Hiroshima they had extra flames. #notacult 'BxMxC' = BABYMETAL Cypher - a cypher is a sort of rap battle I think. There is still a chance it means Bring Moa Chicken. In an interview not too long ago the first question was "How do you feel right now?" Moa answered "Hungry, I need fried chickens." I agree with all the recommendations, but I think 'Akatsuki' live at Budokan Black Night followed by ''AKatsuki' Unfinished version from Legend 1997 (it was the song immediately before 'BABYMETAL Death') would make for a great double reaction. Same song, same melody, completely different performances and feling.

Great reaction. “BABYMETAL death” was the first thing I ever heard by them when I saw them, by accident, at Sonisphere festival in 2014. After about 30 seconds of “ WTF”….but I was hooked. Absolutely brilliant. I saw them do BMC in a small venue two years ago. I was right up close to Su when she sang/ rapped this and it was unbelievable. Amazing talent . This band have it all.

Well you got the first song storyline right . This show was day after Su's 16th Birthday . Su was leaving her Idol( pop) past as our Queen and embracing her metal future and becoming our Metal Goddess. Yes thats right we Crucified our 16 year old Queen so she become our Goddess #notacult You seen the second video Su has so much confidence and swagger now in a good way (not big headed) she had so much stage presence to begin with now in her 20s her stage presence is off the scale . She has just had her 24th Birthday on 20th December last year . I was lucky and i seen this song performed just before lockdown at the Apollo in London 23 February 2020 and BMC nearly blew the roof of the venue the fans went nuts . The story told with pictures (kamishibai) at the beginning of "Babymetal Death" was invented by BM's producer, Kobametal, and is part of the official backstory or lore of Babymetal about how Su was chosen by the Fox God and became a metal goddess. There is another layer of lore about BM themselves developed by the fans that draws on the girls' early work, particularly with Sakura Gakuin, and with their publicity for BM and there are many memes and in jokes. The chant at the beginning is; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words in English are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". "Babymetal Death" is usually how Babymetal introduce themselves at the start of a concert, but here it is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale. Their intro at "Legend 1997" was pretaped versions of Ave Maria and a dub step influenced Headbanger... seriously. In this finale there are also a couple of Metallica homages in the statue and the music and of course X-Japan with the neck brace. This performance is best understood in the context of the manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Unfinished Akatsuki that came before it in the concert and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. The DNA helix in the intro to this is also seen on Su's stick mic in Headbanger... Yes it's all very silly, but just go with it. #notacult. The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography and the statue of Su as Mary juxtaposes death, birth and rebirth. While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together in the lyrics and in the crucifixion. Did I mention #notacult?

Since the Legend 1997 concert, BabyMetal seems to have a Fox God to lead their destiny to all over the world. Their stories are as incredible as fairy tales. Three little Japanese girls change the old metal world.

Great & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 Interestingly enough, you reacted to both heavy but very different old and new songs that have 7 years gaps in between. FYI, BABYMETAL Death was a grand finale song in Legend 1997 but it was frequently performed as an opening song. They did it on Aug.9, 2014 at Heavy Montreal Festival . In the last year's 10 BABYMETAL Budokan Concerts, they played rearranged Death (Shin BM Death) in 4 shows as an opening. Talking about BxMxC, Su-Metal is singing about some established style which used to be revolutionary and literally "stylish" but has turned already hackneyed or obsolete like a "Rusted Chain". Lyrics are suggesting some kind of breakthrough or changes of the status-quo (including the notion of BM itself) in a form of Cypher (= a freestyle session between a few rappers like fighting a duel). When I heard the studio version of BxMxC, I was skeptical that this challenging song would be played live on stage. But I witnessed they did it flawlessly with clear vocal and sharp choreo. They are great !!

General rule for Babymetal: Expect the unexpected.

*BABYMETAL - LEGEND 1997 CONCERT*. Song: BABYMETAL DEATH. The monologue at the start is in Japanese. So hear is (The English Translation of the opening Monologue). "Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven. It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The gene which has been determined from ancient time is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time. The apocalypse prophesied the DOOMSDAY. Towards it, there remains… little time… BABYMETAL DEATH is normally the song that they would open a show with as all there are doing is introducing themselves and geting the crowd fired up and ready for the rest of the show. The lyrics start with the crowd spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" then the girls tell us who they are "Su-metal desu (I am SU-Metal") , "Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal"), "Moametal desu (I am Moametal"), "BABYMETAL desu (we are Babymetal"), now this may look a little strange to you as when introducing themselves individually it is ("I am") yet when introducing themselves as a group it is ("we are"), lets explain that first thing when saying the word "desu" (the U is silent) so when Yui is introducing her self she says "Yuimetal des" but as Yui is saying the word "DES" at the end of saying it she will put her tongue between her teeth makeing a sound like "TH" so you get "Yuimetal des-th" and that put her tongue between her teeth makes the word "Des-th" mean (I am), now when they are introducing them selfs as a group they say "Babymetal des" but they don't put they tongue between her teeth at the end of the word "Des" this makes the word "Des" sound different and changes the meaning of it to (we are), ther is one more word to the lyrics of this and that is the fans line or word in this song they are to chant "Des-th" but even that neads explaining nothing is ever easy with Babymetal, they like to play with things especially words there sounds and meanings they noticed that when introducing themselves in Japanese saying the word "Des-th" ("I am") it sounds very much like the English word "DEATH" they liked that so for the fans part in this song it would be in English to chant "DEATH" repeatedly, all so that is were they got the song title as well it is not just *DEATH* the song title is *BABYMETAL DEATH*. Well that is it for the lyrics in this song they would do this twice then the music go's crazy good and the girls run around all over the stage interacting with the fans and getting them up on there feet bouncing and getting the fans chanting "Death Death Death Death Death Death" they would keep this going for a time ending up in one big chant from everyone of "BABYMETAL DEATH" a big explosion lot's of pyrotechnics end of introduction song everyone ready let the show begin. But this time BABYMETAL DEATH was not played at the opening of the concert it was at the very end of the concert the last of a five song encore, so why move this song from the opening to the end of the concert, well the (LEGEND 1997 CONCERT) was a special one from the beginning to the end but we are not getting it to that now this is about one song in it and of course it had a special role to play in this concert but one all bye it's self, the concert was named LEGEND 1997 because that was the year SU-METAL was born on the 20/12/1997 this concert was on the 21/12/2013 the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as SU said once "this was her birthday party concert and that all the fans coming to her party to help her celibrate her 16th birthday was the best gift that she had received that year". So what was this songs role to be at this concert, well like it says in the opening monologue "receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess", now how did that work like this, the smoke that appears around SU's feet before she collapses was to put her to sleep, the crucifixion is the abandoning of being human but not before receiving the legendary corset (the neck brace), the scream her rebirth as a Goddess, and the chanting of "Death Death Death Death" with crossed kitsunes (the Fox sign) that is the army giving there Goddess her power, first Yui and Moa face the army and receive there power then they turn around and give that power to SU-Metal for she was never to be just a Goddess SU is a METAL GODDESS, she is our Queen, our Goddess. "All hail our QUEEN". "All hail The GODDESS of Metal". *SU-METAL*. Like people said they are slightly miss pronouncing desu to sound like death, desu being the way to introduce yourself in Japanese. Desu meaning i am or we are so Su metal desu, i am Su metal and then Babymetal desu, we are Babymetal. Thats my understanding of it im sure others know better than me.

Good job picking up on 'BABYMETAL Death' being the full title. A lot of first timers think the song title is just 'Death'. It's their only song with the group name in the title. I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn in Chula Vista, California back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's 18th Birthday on June 20th. There were Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. : ) The look of shock was priceless.

There's a lot of symbolism going on in that BABYMETAL DEATH video, all about where the band was at that time and where they were going. Other commenters will fill you in on most of it, I'm going to focus on this being BABYMETAL's transformation song. The band has a silly mythology about the girls and the KAMI being selected by the Fox God to spread heavy metal around the world. When the band members take the stage, they stop being Suzuka, Yui and Moa. They are possessed by the heavy metal spirits and become SU-METAL, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL. This song was usually played at the beginning of their concerts and it's the moment when they transform. SUMETAL DESU! is like saying 'I AM SU-METAL!', which is like the anime trope when a character transforms into a super-hero, like Sailormoon's 'Moon Prism Power....MAKE UP!' In interviews, the band often referred to this as a real thing, like they would play-act at it being real, and they would let themselves think they were becoming someone else. I remember seeing someone talking about watching them rehearsing for their collab with Rob Halford and they said 'but they weren't *really* BABYMETAL yet'. I think it might have been one of the reasons that they were able to be so fearless on stage when they were younger.

Great reaction! This is a very different genre mashup for BM, but wow SU Metal nails it perfectly, she’s even better LIVE. BM rules and love this track ;). And don’t say you’re stupid, because in fact she is saying DESU and they’re playing with words DESU/DEATH. SU-Metal desu roughly means ‘I’m Su-Metal’. So, it works as an introduction to all the singers in BM. You also got the story correctly, right off the bat ;)

they are singing 'Desu' Japanese for 'i am'. The u is not pronounced, so it sounds like they are saying 'Su-Metal Death' (and the other names), but it's 'Su-Metal desu'--'I am Su-Metal'.

There was a gap in the subtitles for the BxMxC video. The slightly obscure English language word 'whatchamacallit' was omitted in the second verse. The word is used as a replacement word when you don't know what something is called, essentially a contraction of the phrase 'what-you-may-call-it'. Using it in conversation is often taken as an invitation for the listener to fill in the gap and provide the correct word. The word is actually shown scrolling across the screen behind the performance. There are other obscure words that serve the same purpose, such as 'thingamajig'.

Amazing reaction again! Glad you got the translated intro story for "Babymetal Death", that way you had a good understanding about the theatrics and what it means. Also, you almost got the word "desu" right, so good on you! The disbelieve in your face when they put Su on the cross was priceless! They sacrificed her a couple of times but the important ones were birthday related (like the one you saw here from Legend 1997) and the other one to celebrate her 20th birthday at the Legend S show. "BxMxC" is one of my favourite Babymetal songs and I am so happy that they performed it live since it hits so much harder than the studio version. Not sure if I would classify it as hip-hop or rap, I guess it is a mix of both, and it works so well with the super heavy guitars and drums on top of it. As for what to expect from Babymetal, well expect the unexpected. Every song is different and they don't hesitate to grab any other music style and mix it in their own unique way to make it kawaii metal. There are no bad Babymetal songs in the 50+ they have, but I am not sure what you should or would like to see next. Maybe pick one from the early days (like "Doki Doki Morning" or "Iine !" that's ee-neh aka "いいね！", the official mv is super fun but any live video will do too^^) and mix it with something recent (like "Pa Pa Ya" for example). I am looking forward to your next reaction!

Hey Verdy! Good reactions! I just have to say whoever did the translation subtitles for that BMC video was.... a little off.

Rewinding at each part of the song is the right way to react to BABYMETAL ! Thanks ! I encourage you to react to "iine". It is rarely reacted to but can show you their debuts. I would advice the MV version instead of the live one, because the sound is more clean and the video emphasize the different parts, IMO. As a second one, you can pick up Doki Doki Morning, which is their other debut song ;)

I think you already can do a guide (preferably the longer one that ~45min), the main spoiler is the crucifixion and you already just saw it. For your 2 song take I suggest Akatsuki, in 2 versions. It shows pretty well how good singer Su-Metal is (it is her solo song, without Yui and Moa), and how versatile she can be. And how the same song can be soooo much different. Another great reaction to one of the best Metal concert finales ever. The word that sounds like "Death" is the Japanese word "Desu", which in French would be the verb "Etre". The crowd and the girls spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and add "Des" (the 'u' is silent), which is "Etre/I am/We are". And that's it. The official explanation for the name of BxMxC is: 1) The xes are silent. 2) BMC = Bring Moa Chicken. The Chicken reference will make sense to you later if you stick with BABYMETAL. You may even find out why Su's shoes don't have laces; what a Mint-flavored Time Machine is; why CDs and DVDs and BDs are all called DeLoreans; the significance of robots, tomatoes, bullfrogs, and pizza; and why you should never let Moa near your ears (among other things). It's funny that Babymetal finally gets to say "back in the day, when we first started". The x in BxMxC are just pauses between the letters. The song tittle would be said as B M C. You would love getting to see the whole Legend 1997 concert, as the whole thing was done as a Rock Opera. Telling a story from beginning to end. So even back in the day Babymetal knew how to put on a show. BMC is a bonus track on the 3rd album. This song is so much heavier live. and the recording is pretty heavy.
