I'm a mountain boy. Pretty much everyone I knew loved this song. I agree with you. It's a masterpiece.

Some friends and I used to camp in the Colorado Rockies, the Grand Tetons and Alberta way, back in the seventies. There were these places that struck you to the bone with their beauty. In the late spring of '76 we camped along Grand Tetons, with the snow-capped mountain range in the background, piercing low hanging gray clouds ("poking the eye of God") nesting behind a line of tall pines at their foot, a clear ice-cold mountain lake in front of them, and in the foreground was a field of multitude of different colored wild flowers. We nick-named the place "Cheyenne Valley." We cooked thick steaks, with its juices dripping over open flames, causing them to lick the the meat, along with baked potatoes, and drank beer cooled in the ice-cold lake. Best damn meal I ever had or ever will! If there's a heaven, then Cheyenne Valley was a glimpse of it

One of my very favorite songs because I so understand the thoughts of the narrator., beautifully expressed by the music. You should Google some images of the Rocky Mountains if you've not been there before. They're a splendor.

John Denver was a great singer and fabulous songwriter. He has loads of great songs which you should listen to. He also sounds the same live as he does on the studio versions.
