Kasey once said that the 'captain' in her song was inspired by her bands full time tour bus driver. The metaphors extend from there; a safe place between gigs where her journey (both actual and metaphorical) and safety are totally in the hands of someone she trusts and has great affection for. It was perhaps her first international hit when it was used in the Sopranos, and as she sort of says at the start of this clip it's meaning has morphed many times since, even for her.

I believe you are referring to Mr Bayliss, he was the driver of the bus who took her and her mother thru Africa.. but I could be wrong! But also have a look at my other comment re her bf Kurt. (That story came straight from her father's mouth)

"With a refrain that goes, “And you’ll be the captain/ And I’ll be no one,” the song was misconstrued by some as an example of a young girl trying to solve her problems by subordinating herself to a guy. Chambers told Billboard that was far from the song’s truth. “Lots of women come up to me saying, ‘That’s so sexist,’” she said. “I wrote it … for someone who’s really special to me. It’s kind of through the eyes of myself in about 10 years’ time, when I want to settle down and take it easy and just be no one for a day.” The verses show a protagonist who’s aware of her faults but also resilient and prepared to make a change in her life for the better. The opening lines are almost bracing in their honesty: “Well I don’t have as many friends because/ I’m not as pretty as I was/ I’ve kicked myself at times because I’ve lied.” Instead of wallowing, she shows self-awareness and turns the page: “So I will have to learn to stand my ground/ I’ll tell ‘em I won’t be around/ I’ll move on over to your town and hide.” In the second verse, the story starts to become less about her dependence on “The Captain” and more about her need to escape the stifling, unforgiving atmosphere of her previous situation. “I searched here for my second wind/ Is there somewhere here to let me in I asked,” Chambers sings. Her next lines not only reveal the cold answers she received but also her defiant response: “So I slammed the doors they slammed at me/ I found the place I’m meant to be/ I figured out my destiny at last.” Considering the context provided by the verses, “The Captain” to whom she turns in the chorus is less a savior than a merciful friend. If the protagonist seems a bit meek and yielding in her dealings with this character, it’s understandable considering what she’s left behind. Speaking of context, you wouldn’t have thought this little boom-chicka country song, which features guest backing vocals by Julie Miller, would ever fit into a show like The Sopranos. But creator David Chase’s must have sensed that “The Captain” could also work with the “capos,” and the song made a memorable end-credits appearance in the show’s third season. It shows that great music works anywhere. More than that though, “The Captain” demonstrates that Kasey Chambers came into her own as a songwriter and performer much sooner than most."

Adelaide Capital of the state of South Australia is known for two things Murders many and horrific and being where so many exceptionally talented musicians and singers come from. Kasey was born in a South Australian town

I live in Adelaide too, you need to listen to an Adelaide ( Scottish) rock icon and lead singer of cold chisel, jimmy Barnes, start with bow river, then “ good times “ with inxs then “ stone cold “

@@chasalbert5113 Adelaide is where a lot of the best Australian artists came from because it's an unpretentious town, then they go east to become Australian legends

I get the opposite feel from this song. I've listened to it so many times and it always feels negative to me. She's been shut down, put in her place. She's noone...he's the boss and it's her job to be subservient to him. The sad, wistful way she sings adds to that feeling. Just my thoughts 😢

I have no idea what the song's about...I'm kinda dumb when it comes to lyrics and song meanings haha! Anyways, the song was nice and she sang from the heart...that makes it good for me. In a way, this ind of reminds me of Anneke Van Giersbergen when she does her solo stuff with just her voice and a guitar...very stripped down and intimate. You should hear the live acoustic cover of Audioslave's Like A Stone that she does. It's really good...and her stage banter is quite funny in the version I'm thinking of the video I speak of has the title "Anneke van Giersbergen's VUUR - Like a Stone (Chris Cornell cover) + funny moments". Even if you don't do a reaction to it, check it out offline. Cheers!

I'm gonna say this before looking into it, but this could be about her dad.

Great reaction. As with most Aussie artists, live performances are usually better. This song is from the start of her career, so you may want to try 'Aint No Little Girl' from the other end. It shows her growth as a person. I recommend the live performance from the Bluegrass Underground. Her ability to cut her own heart out and leave it laying there on the stage is breathtaking. Another one I would recommend is her song about being homesick, 'Nullabor Song (Live)'. Bring tissues.

She was in the industry young. She needed to take time away, in a safe place. The guy is a married friend who allowed her the space to get it back together. Somebody misheard his name, so he is affectionately the captain since that time. At the time they interviewed both of them on this topic.

I heard the Captain was her first boyfriend whose name was Kurt Menghetti (sp?). He rang her family home one day, her dad answered the phone and asked who was wanting to speak to his daughter. "Kurt Menghetti" he says. Her dad didn't hear him properly so he yelled out to Kasey, "who the f..k is Captain Eddie?" And from that day forward, he bfb was called "The Captain" and she wrote this song for him. She also wrote a song for his mother who died beforebshe met Kurt. Check out "This Flower"
