This is the last track on their very first album - recorded in September 1968 and released in the US in January 1969. Many of Led Zep's songs are arranged in "movements" sorta like classical music. The weird guitar psychedelic sound is the guitarist Jimmy Page, playing the guitar with a violin bow - which he does on several LZ songs. And a tour de force for John Bonham on drums. This is Zep's take on 2 blues songs Howlin Wolf's How Many More Years and Albert King's The Hunter. Thanks for the reaction - hope you'll do more. ☮

Thanks for doing my pick!… This was recorded in 1968 and you’re basically hearing the beginnings of what was known as hard rock… But it was born out of the black blues, followed by a desire by some of the young guitarists of the day, including Jimmy Page to create great riffs… I think what you mean by groove is the catchy riff. Mix in a couple of 20 year olds like Robert Plant and John Bonham with unbridled energy, the solid bass of John Paul Jones and you’ve got early Zeppelin!

Actually, this is blues rock. ;) Glad that you enjoyed it. It's one of my favorites. Led Zeppelin were amazingly versatile and creative. We never knew what to expect from them. Every song is a real journey.

The drummer, John Bonham, is absolutely murdering the drums in this song. Just a relentless avalanche on the skins. He's one of the best to ever pick up sticks, and songs like this are just the beginning.

I believe the best way to describe Led Zeppelin, generally, is that they are masters of re-interpreting the blues. Essentially, they gave the genre a turbo-charged facelift. And in doing so, they created an entirely new sound for the time. It launched, and influenced, the rock history that followed, even to this day.

Blues rock!! Yeah Zeppelin-fied!! They are magnificent!!! Jimmy plays the guitar with a violin bow in the eerie part of this! They are British but Robert has a one of a kind voice! This was 1969.

Great reaction. The live versions (filmed) at the Royal Albert Hall 1970 and Danmark TV 1969 are much better though. Zeppelin often improved on the studio versions when playing them live. This particular song is a prime example. It was done better live. Cheers. ✌️

I was in school, minding my own business, when a friend asked me to come over to his place after school. I just got this Album that came out. You gotta hear it, he excitedly said. January 1969. I was 12. It changed my life forever.🤘Btw, one song will chill you, as in goosebumps "Kashmir" A masterpiece.

They were the biggest selling act in the seventies both album wise and concert wise nobody matched them bands would not play in the same city 3 weeks before Zeppelin and or 3 weeks after Zeppelin came and gone

It’s at least two songs. Howling Wolf’s How Many More Years and Albert King’s the Hunter, I believe. I guess you could call this blues rock. Jimmy Page uses a bow on his guitar in the quiet section. There’s a great live version of this too, from Denmark radio in 1969. Always expect the unexpected with Zeppelin. Also, check out Bron-Y-Aur Stomp by them. It has a bit of a blue grass feel to it.

Robert Plant said that How Many More Times was psychedelic jazz. This song is in jazz freeform style. This song is taken from three old blues songs. The 11th child that Robert talks about that is his child. He only has one lol and the reference of the hunter and Rosie is that Robert is going after Rosie and he’s got Rosie in the sights of his gun meaning himself. He’s a female girl hunter if you get that reference without getting deleted. This album was written and recorded in 1968 and released January 1969. Led Zeppelin has just been together a few months.

John Henry "Bonzo = The Beast" Bonham could go from the most subtle, softest, drum rolls to the most thunderous, avalanche of sound from sticks to his bare hands (yes he really did!). He had awesome unforced power, and a bass drum foot like castanets! That's what Jimmy Hendrix said about Bonham's fast foot! Cheers!

That was a blast! Love the bass beat and drums, and the screaming guitar. To be honest, I would have been happy bopping my head along with them without the vocals to distract me! Had a quick google for the lyrics because I couldn't catch much, but it was so... disjointed, I still couldn't figure out what was going on. 🤣

Please start at the beginning albums, progress thru them all, and stay with the studio versions, cuz the Live stuff, doesn't capture the musicianship..of all four greats because of tech at that time, the tours, the drugs...but each studio album, is epic, ..enjoy the journey...

It gets better as you learn more about certain artists and the bands used are actually members of a very high tier of plug and play musicians which appear on many different albums playing an incredible variety of music. I use Tommy Aldridge (drummer) as an example.

Inside the band they referred to this song as psychedelic jazz. It's an elaboration on Albert King's "The Hunter" In classical music the different parts of the song are known as movements. I think they were definitely throwing aces all around on this jam and it's one of my top five favorite Zeppelin songs. Live they would stretch it out to about a half an hour and take it all over the place.

1st album came out in 1969. By the way, the second album came out in 69 as well and the third came out in 1970. The 4th in 1971. After that they slowed down a bit. LOL. Many of Zepps' older bluesier songs were Heavily inspired by old blues masters. Like John Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters. So much of the lyrics often were snippets from their songs. But they did change the music up a lot from the songs. And the phychodelic stuff was a thing many bands did back then. For the most part, Zeppelin moved away from that pretty quickly.

If you want Blues from Zepplin you must hear the live Madison square garden version if Since I've been loving you. If you really want some good blues the blues brothers or the blues Travelers even if you don't like the blues they will change your mind.

Psychedelic? No that is jazz Led Zeppelin is playing in the beginning of the song not psychedelic! This is a jazzy hard rock song! With some experimental playing with the signature violin bow on electric guitar playing buy Jimmy Page!
