Reaction to Lovebites' Epic Performance of 'Holy War'

Congratulations, you just found the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their first five years of existence, they put themselves on par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. They recently went on a year-and-a half hiatus while they searched for a new bassist. They announced the new bassist in October 2022 (see below) and dropped their first new song, “Judgement Day” on December 22. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and founder of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the great European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other groups. The four of them then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she was also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed a little more than half of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics and is also getting involved in composing. In mid-2021, Miho left the band she had founded, for personal reasons. They recently announced their new bassist, Fami, who is a young phenom and herself a composer and multi-instrumentalist. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance was that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like crazy). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." One thing about these Japanese female artists, most notably Lovebites, Nemophila, Band Maid, and Gacharic Spin, is they can take an incredibly complex song and make it look easy, that takes so much skill and talent.

If you do Japan bands you need to do trinity: Lovebites, Band-Maid, Nemophilia. But there's many more fantastic bands! Band-Maid is the top for me though.

They're even better now. They have a new bass player Fami that is amazing. Her bass cover of Alien Alien is godlike. I'm a big fan of Hatsune Miku (who sings Alien Alien) so that works too. Babymetal is technically all female because the backing band are session musicians. Babymetal is the Idol Group in the front. Babymetal performed in the beginning without a band. So it's not a lie but it's not the way I would describe them. Also Megitsune was a music video so the people in the video weren't even their backing band. They were dancers. Babymetal has Official Live videos if you want to see what they are really like. It's weird to me that people expect to see real things in a music video. Every music video is fake. The little boy in Enter Sandman was not a member of Metallica.
