"Portugal had a minor role and this part could have been skipped" Well, thank you very much HistoryLegends for not caring about Portugal's involvement in WW1 and for the portuguese people who lost their lives over a country that soon after abandoned their soldiers. What about you explain the topic of Portugal during WW1 better instead of saying to your viewers "Oh, they almost did nothing, better for it to be skipped, instead let's talk about Canadian troops, that's more interesting, am I right?". You complained about SimpleHistory having a biased vision and yet, here you are not caring about explaining Portugal in WW1 just because you think "they had a minor role".

Thanks again for a very good critique. I totally agree that Gallipoli was a sound strategic concept poorly executed. As an example the Greek military had planned a landing on the Aegean coast during the 1st Balkan war to march on Constantinople, but estimated it needed 150,000 troops. This was beyond their resources. The British were aware of this but landed only 75,000 troops and much further south than the Greek plan. One point you failed to mention when talking of atrocities is the Ottoman perpetrated genocide of 1.5m Armenians, and 300,000 Greeks from the Black Sea region of Asia Minor.

@@binbasesatoktayyldran5236 Initially, the Turkish Armenians did not help anyone, because they were not promised anything. Plus, the Turks were quite loyal to the Armenians and there was no oppression, that is, the Armenians had no motives to fiercely crave independence. It's just that the Turks needed to blame someone for the defeat in the Caucasus and the Armenians came up best. Indeed, how can a Turkish commander admit that he is not the most ideal commander? The Armenians are clearly to blame! And as the pogroms grew, the Armenians began to resist, thereby giving an excuse to declare the ongoing "betrayal" of the Armenians and at the same time once again shift responsibility for the defeats.

The offensive on the Thessaloniki front followed on September 15. In his section Serbian Army and the Thessaloniki Offensive, General Milan Nedic says: "Before the 1918 offensive, both sides had almost equal forces: each with 600,000 men." The enemy was superior in infantry, and the allies in cavalry, aviation and weapons, especially of large caliber." At dawn, on September 1, the allied offensive began on the line Soko - Dobro Polje - Veternik with tremendous fire from 580 guns. The day after, after the artillery had cleared the way, the Serbian and French infantry attacked. Their rush was overwhelming. The key conflict was in the Battle of Dobro polje, in which the front was broken through. On the eastern part of the front, the Bulgarians managed to stop the British and Greek forces in the Battle of Dojran Lake, and there was uncertainty among the commanders whether to continue the offensive or go on the defensive. Then the regent Alexander issued the energetic historic command: "Forward, to glory or death!" The Serbian advance continued with the same vigor, aided by French infantry and cavalry units. Bulgaria, seeing the disarray of its army, and otherwise dissatisfied with the behavior of its allies, decided quickly on a separate peace. Already on September 13, their emissaries came asking for peace. When their delegation arrived in Thessaloniki, the Bulgarian representatives offered General Epere to go over to their side. Epere answered in a soldier's brief manner: "Not at all." You are defeated and submit to the law of the victor." The conditions for peace were not very difficult, however. It was wise not to send any Serbian regiment to Bulgaria, so that there would be no heavy scenes of revenge. King Ferdinand, abdicated the throne and left Bulgaria forever on September 21. The collapse of the Bulgarian army and the penetration of the allies from the south accelerated the collapse of Austria-Hungary. The Serbs who were her subjects sympathized with their compatriots in the opposing camp and looked to help them wherever they could. The Czechs surrendered like soldiers on all fronts, and in the interior they made it clear that they were no longer, as before, the pillars of the Habsburg Monarchy. Franz Joseph's successor, who died on November 8, 1916, Emperor Charles, was unable to properly succeed his cousin. The collapse of Bulgaria increased the number of defeatists and caused panic. The war was once again approaching the southern borders of Austria-Hungary. Then the words almost became catchphrases: "Better an end to horrors, than horrors without end." And in Germany, the day after the Bulgarian capitulation, the state chancellor was replaced, and the Chief of the General Staff, Marshal Hindenburg himself, justified the Bulgarian collapse as the need to peace negotiations begin. The allied army, led by the Serbian army, penetrated further during that time. The Germans tried, with urgent reinforcements brought from Russia and Romania, to stop the advance of the allies from the south, but they did not get enough time to reorganize. In front of Niš, 47 German battalions, in fortified positions, could not stop 27 Serbian ones. After defeating the 11th German Army, which occupied Belgrade in 1915, on October 12, 1918, the forces of the First Serbian Army headed by Duke Petar Bojović entered Nis. After Niš, they repulsed the enemy near Paraćin and Kruševac and in other smaller skirmishes, so they arrived in Belgrade on October 19. The enemy could not even hold on to the Sava and Danube lines. His strength was broken and demoralized, without exception. The victorious Serbian army did not stay at home, to rest after so much fatigue and to gather their scattered household members, but continued their campaign. "The result of these victories, which is especially weighty, is that the Serbs are entering their country victoriously, which will make Austria tremble at the sight of this army." - Daily Telegraph (Comments of the British Press, High Command War Daily 10 November 1918) On October 21st, the Adriatic Division was formed, which moved through Albania and Montenegro towards the sea, and on November 5th, they entered Cetinje and continued towards the sea, where the fighting continued for several weeks. On November 4, the First Serbian Army enters Bosnia, and two days later it ceremoniously enters Sarajevo. On November 14, the First Serbian Battalion entered Zagreb, and a day later the Serbian army also entered Rijeka.

Portugal sent a whole Expeditionary Corps to France of over 50,000 men (in fact one of Ludendorff's 1918 offensives, the Fourth Battle of Ypres, was precisely meant to hit first the Portuguese Corps, who was weaker and more bound to retreat), not to mention tens of thousands engaged in Africa. Also, Germany declared war on Portugal because the Portuguese decided to seize all German ships in their ports, because our government wanted a pretext to get into a war and grab German African possessions.

5.02: Wrong. It was Germans that bombed Sevastopol. Two German ship were running away from British ships and wanted to use Bosphorus to escape. During that time as a neutral country Ottomans didn’t allow any belligerent military ship. So the Germans donated the ships to Ottomans and their names were changed to Turkish ones. Ottomans accepted this deal because they purchased two ships from Britain before which Britain refused to deliver. After entering Bosphorus and getting rid of pursuing British ships, the technically Turkish ships with German crew went straight ahead and bombed Sevastopolo without Ottomans’ knowledge. Thus the Ottoman Empire was “dragged” into war by Germany

History does not give enough credit nor celebration to Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. He remains to be credited as one of history’s most successful commanders in guerrilla warfare. With only 14,000 men (11,000 being Askari; local Africans), he kept 300,000 Allied troops locked down in South-Eastern Africa for the entirety of the war. He was kinda like Germany’s version of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). He was widely respected throughout German East Africa and especially by his Askari troops since he fluently spoke the local dialects, respected and recognized their customs and traditions, and was respectful towards his men under his command. When he finally surrendered since Germany capitulated. The Allies received his surrender with traditional military honors out of deep respect for his achievements during the campaign. He would return to Germany as a National Hero. The man even straight up told Hitler to “go f**k himself” when he was offered to be a Nazi Ambassador and spent the entirety of WW2 under Nazi house surveillance.

However, the answer was negative as not a single regimental flag fell into the hands of the enemy. As many as 47 of the 51st have been preserved. Three sy disappeared in battles when the ensigns destroyed them themselves so that they would not fall into enemy possession. Fourth, the flag of the famous Iron Regiment, i.e. the Second Infantry Regiment Prince Mihailo of the first call of the Moravian Division was the funeral shroud at the funeral of King Peter I Karađorđević and was buried with him. As this incident happened in 1915, it is highly unlikely it had anything to do with the U.S. entering into the war almost three years later. Second thing is: "The Zimmerman Telegram". The Allies were bled dry after suffering so many causalities during almost four years of bloody battles. They desperately needed fresh blood, (fresh meat). The Zimmerman Telegram was , allegedly, sent from Berlin to the German Embassy, in Mexico City, stating to offer the Mexican government armament, and the training to attack the U.S. Sothern border to recapture territories lost to the U.S. in the Mexican American War. once this information went public, the Congress went wild, and voted to declare war on Germany, Only one catch. The telegram was sent in a secret code, and it was intercepted, and decrypted by, are you ready? British Navel Intelligences. You seen to be pretty smart, so come to your own conclusions.

7:54 you should really check a newer Serbian movie ,,King Peter the First" or ,,Kralj Petar prvi", it takes place through the start of WW1 to the Serbian army crossing the Albania and went to the Corfu. It also shows every aspect of Serbia in WW1, the death of the civilians that A-H empire and Bulgaria conducted. Also one of the characters is the youngest soldier in WW1 Momcilo Gavric.

His emphasize on Americas involvement is vastly overstated. By the time American forces where deployed on the front to make a difference the war was all but over anyway. America did very little and had very little impact on WW1. On the same level or less then Portugal. All Americas involvement so late in the war did was sacrifice a lot of American troops for nothing. Germany was economically finished, it's people starving, The Kaisers marine in full mutiny and its army, although still standing, was all but finished.

Americas involvement dashed Germany's hopes at ever winning. If it didn't, they wouldnt have tried to finish off France before America showed up. Not to mention, although they got rich from it, they did supply far more to the Allies than the Axis. That's not nothing.

I love how in the war the nation of Germany only talked about the eastern front as nothing happened on the western front but its all we ever talk about. All the great stories on that front & in the Balkans ignored since we only hear about the big powers & not about the true source of the war or the actual events. If you want to make a video game on ww1 do it as Germany in the eastern front give stories from there a chance to thrive.

It's indeed dumb to claim that the allies had a population advantage "because the colonies". White colonies were very sparsely populated, and the other colonies were populated by natives who were hardly as easy to enlist as an actual British or French citizen, understandably. More than half the population of the French empire was outside of the mainland, yet, only 4% of the army was from that colonial empire. It just wasn't the same thing. And regarding mainland population, Germany had an advantage over France or Britain. No, the difference in numbers came from 1.Russia 2.the amount of countries on the entente side 3.Russia. Also, while Austria Hungary had a decently large population (50 million, compared with 39 million in France and 44 million in Britain), they couldn't fully use it, because AH was weird political construct. Bulgaria and the Ottoman weren't very populated. So of course in the end, the population difference gave the allies a big advantage, but it's absolutely not because of the colonies. Natives, even by the millions, didn't give a significant advantage in the grand scheme of things.
