YESSSSSS!! And there are only 3 guys playing. RUSH, the world’s smallest orchestra. After being a fan for 45 years and seeing them live over 70 times…… they still make me feel as good as they did when I first heard them in 1975. MORE RUSH PLEASE!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. All Rush fans know the story how the rhythm section was created - it is the Morse code played by the tower on approach. They built a song around it, which is supposed to express the joy of coming home after a long trip. Love that you reviewed it. If you want to check out something that will absolutely blow your mind, check out the live drum performance of Neil Peart - "Live in Frankfurt". This is a man who displays the performance of a musician who has reached the pinnacle of his craft.
For all of the people that never got to see rush live, I feel for ya, they always put on such an amazing show I can still recall seeing them several times as if it were yesterday. They are greatly missed but not forgotten and their music will live forever and will withstand the sands of time.
Another really great live performance by Rush is their performance of "Spirit of Radio" live in Toronto in 2003 in front of 500,000 fans. It's an amazing performance!
Sitting here in my office, about 1km from Toronto's Pearson Airport - YYZ - loving this reaction. That crowd in Rio was as big a part of the song as Alex, Neil and Geddy were. Amazing!
That whole concert in Rio was insane. They did put it out on Blu-ray so you can get the whole thing in the surround sound of that time. I listen to it regularly. :)
Neal Peart (the drummer) was considered the number 1 rock drummer in the world. Instead of sitting on his butt, he hired a famous drum coach and relearned how to play drums (holding the sticks traditionally instead of overhand like he'd been doing). He admired jazz drummers and jazz drummers hold their sticks traditionally. It took him a long time to get back to the level he'd been at before, but he did and he was happy and still considered a living legend. Instead of sitting on his butt, he changed his style again back to overhand, because he'd learned both and wanted to push himself by combining the understanding of traditional and overhand. Neal Peart never let excellence slow him down. He retired from touring after realizing he could no longer perform at 120% on top of his game and still a legend to all living rock and metal drummers. Rest In Peace Mr. Peart.
I remember I was living in Sao Paulo at that time and missed this concert but I remember when Geddy was saying afterwards he never saw a crowd singing a whole instrumental through. So it's not only you - this is one of the best live performance of a song ever! The best live gig as by most critics were Queen at Live Aid 1985, you should do this as well if you haven't done yet, some goes for Pink Floyd live at Pompeii 1973.
A Canadian band playing for a very appreciative Brazilian audience, being reacted to by a lovely French woman and enjoyed by an American. Truly international! 🥰
You should listen to the studio version, b/c a lot of the intricacies are lost in the crowd noise, and Alex's guitar volume is kinda low. Better yet, just do the whole "Moving Pictures" album.
Im an american so i dont know as much about it as i should, but this entire crowd is like soccer, world cup time crazy...it is truly awesome, as in from the root of the word "awe", im just in *awe* of such enthusiasm & such power & the vibe put across by them...music is one of the international languages, obviously. Anyway, Great reaction Verdy:) Lastly, ur "amazed face" is so great, ive seen it with SRV "texas flood at el mocambo", & anything jimmy page & robert plant...ur reactions are great.
Beside bassist, drummer is another guy out of this world. You can find on RU-vid his drum solo from concert in Frankfurt. Absolutely nuts! In my opinion is the thing from above that such three of genius could find themselves and create rock group. :)
It seems like the crowd was mic'ed, but i know it wasnt , its just world cup soccer-level madness of enthusiasm....its so awesome to see (and hear) & "awesome" as in the root of the word, which is "awe", to be "in awe" of something....the crowds vibes are g.o.a.t.'ed & magnificent...jaw-dropping.
Glad you got off on this one. Live Rush is always a treat. All Rush fans will say the same. Live songs to do, Working man live in Cleveland. Xanadu from the Exit stage left tour.
Yes! There are more incredible live performance videos from Rush! You should check out the video for "By-Tor & the Snowdog" medley from 1981 (Exit Stage Left video)!! It is a medley of some of their older music, played at the end of their set, on their famous Moving Pictures tour! It's By-Tor/In The End/In The Mood/Grande Finale (2112) show stopper! You will love it!
I still love this song and appreciate it so much even all these years later. What I did not know back then or recognize was the Middle Eastern sound that the Alex solo had in it but now I sure do hear the influence. Later on Snakes and Arrows also had a lot more different feeling in some of the music as it was influenced by eastern music. I really miss your reactions to Rush albums, from their earliest to middle years especially. Caress of Steel and Hemispheres are both way up on my list of favorites from them, but the others are good too as they can be so different. As you've done one (2112) now you only have 18 more to pick from. :)
Jazz is in Brazilians' DNA .. wild to hear them singing complex melodies right in the pocket, while our North American crowds have trouble clapping in time.
Working Man live in Cleveland One Little Victory live in Rio Xanadu from Exit Stage Left Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour All great live performances from these guys Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for your reaction vids for Rush 2112 and this one. Please, Please, do a reaction to "La Villa Strangiato"! The best one to watch is the one on the official Rush channel. The guys are pretty young and it's mind blowing how talented they were, even at that age! You will love it. I really enjoy watching you react. I grew up with this music, and watching you is like watching my own daughter 30 years ago, when I introduced her to Rush, Yes, Supertramp, and Black Sabbath. She went to a Rush concert with me and my buddies, and she had the time of her life. Cheers! Michael in Champaign, Illinois, USA.
This is one of the greatest drummers ever to play the drum set and unfortunately we lost him in January 2020 to bring cancer but wow what a great drummer what a great band
🔥🔥🔥 Loved your enthusiastic reaction. I agree, this one is fire and the crowd is amazing as well. You may want to check out "Where's My Thing", with Neil Peart drum solo, live in Dallas. It's another banger from RUSH! Thanks much for this one!🏆
Audio capture, wholeheartedly agree. That fast switching camera angles during a lot of the songs gets very annoying very fast. At some points it was like they need a different image angle for every other beat. Huge fan and seen them 15+ times and absolulutely love the audio from this live release but others I'm more a fan of for the video capture.
Canadian reacting to the best ever canadian band haha. Your face was awesome! South american crowds are just NUTS. This one has even Babymetal quality. Rush is my all time No. one band since I heared them first in (I guess) 1976. Best trio ever, you will be blown away by them for sure. As always, greets from Germany and keep on rockin!
Unreal performance. Did you catch Geddy's 3 dryers on his "backline?" A bit of a running band joke...along with the chicken rotisserie later on, and a snack machine and fridge at other points in their touring.
if you react like this to YYZ, can't wait to see the look on your face when you react to the biggest new music video in the world , nearly 2 million views in only 3 days on RU-vid. POLYPHIA-EGO DEATH feat STEVE VAI official music video, WOW ! I think this is going to be one of the greatest instrumental classics of all time, great collaboration with one of the top 10 greatest guitar player's of all time Steve Vai, an UNBELIEVABLE MASTERPIECE, best wishes from the north east coast of England.
People flocked to see them. I think their followers knew that they earned their way to the top. No help by record companies or radio stations. Any more than 2:30 minutes seldom got played on a.m. radio so they took to the road and played almost non stop. Slowly but surely his audience grew and eventually they could not be ignored by the main stream. One of the best selling album sellers. That’s impressive since singles are easier to sell. Listen to most bands and you will see one hit on an album. This is good stuff.
As a long time bass player and obvious fan of Rush, I always like to see people's first time reaction to the talent and versitility of these three men. I'll recommend "Natural Science" , "The Analog Kid", "Digital Man" and the album "Hemispheres" in it's entirety. Thanks for your videos, keep up the good work.
You should check out La Villa Strangiato, Analog Kid, Red Barchetta, The Big Money, Spirit of Radio & 2112! Rush is an unbelievable, once-in-a-lifetime, extraordinarily talented band. I guarantee you will never see anything like them, ever again! RIP, Neil Peart, aka the Professor
Best Live Performance RUSH - Xanadu - Live In Montreal 1981 (2021 HD Remaster 60fps) Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells. Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2byjJkN_nVY.html
YYZ is emblematic of many Rush songs, a short repeating pattern that threatens to be overplayed, but then switched to a different pattern, each one a nice counterpart, similar enough to complement, different enough to progress forward. Jacob's Ladder has a similar structure.
Well done Miss Verdy! 3 of the most accomplished Canadian musicians (I'm so proud!) that have no trouble executing complex music live without a hitch, only 3 guys, think about it... Lifeson plays bass pedals and Lee keyboards and vocals in addition to their base instrument, no wonder they've had success since their debut in 1975 until their retirement, one of the greatest Progressive Rock bands that ever was, thank you for the great reaction, by the way, considering the complexity of their music, pretty much all their live performances are stellar and well worth a look!
You have to listen to the studio version of "YYZ" from the Moving Pictures album, and then check out the live version from "Exit Stage Left" which contains, in my humble opinion, Neil Peart's best, most lyrical and well composed drum solo. Unfortunately, that last one is not accompanied by video, but you'll still be blown away. I know I was when I first heard it.
My humble reccomendation would be a live performance of Xanadu from 81 exit stage left tour. If you want the magic then review "La Villa Strangiato" the official music video recorded as a live performance.
