Your smile through out this performance says it all. I probably heard this song a million times and it doesn't get old. The guitar is a double neck Gibson EDS-1275, basically a double neck SG. The top neck is a 12 string and the bottom neck is a 6 string. You can see him switch from the 12 string to the 6 string right before he starts playing one of the best and iconic guitar solos in history.

I was blessed and fortunate enough to see Zeppelin live at "Live Aid," 1985, Philadelphia, RFK Stadium. Phil Collin played drums, but Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones were there. They played this song and every single person in that stadium was standing up, including myself. I had tears in my eyes and remember feeling one and part of the universe, the stars were out and I looked up.... Speechless and breathless. Jimmy Page's guitar solo had me in heaven. They also played "Rock and Roll," and "Black Dog.," but "Stairway to Heaven" took me to heaven! 😋

@michaeldavid6284 Год назад
Totally disagree. Live performances are exciting and often a great, memorable experience, but the original studio version of tunes are almost always superior. I've been a Zep fan for decades, and that is certainly the case with almost all of their songs, and expecially Stairway To Heaven. The audio quality and the artistry of the production is miles above what could be attempted and performed live. That's not a knock or criticism of Led Zeppelin or any other band.

@michael david I know thgis is sacriligeous, but go watch Jimmy play Ten Years Gone with the Black Crowes, simply THE best song i have ever seen live, (i wasn't there, but you understand). The only Zeppelin song better than Zeppelin. I so wish Jeff and Eric had got up on stage with Zeppelin to do it live. Also sorry, but i disagree with your disagree, the 73 MSG Stairway is simply sublime, that solo is the best solo ever in my opinion.
@TucoBenedicto
@TucoBenedicto Год назад
@@michaeldavid6284 Well, tough luck for you, because THIS version of the solo is my favorite by a LANDSLIDE, even if you disagree. The fact that it follows the original track only loosely and that half of it is on-the-spot improv only contributes to make it even more outstanding. And I say thins as someone who learned to love the song with its studio version and was originally heavily biased toward it.

Jimmy is p-laying a Gibson EDS-1275 "Doublerneck" guitar . The top neck is a twelve string and the bottom one is a six string neck. He used the twelve string neck to bring fullness and to better replicate the acoustic and 12 string guitar parts on the record, then he switches to the six string neck for the blistering solo..On the studio record he used a Harmony Sovereign H1260 acoustic guitar and a Fender Electric XII 12 string for the main guitar parts, and for the solo, Page used a 1959 Fender Telecaster that Jeff Beck had gifted him after using it extensively in the Yardbirds.

Now with music streaming, all music lovers of music should not necessarily start at the beginning of the history of music but from their own time, go in reverse chronologically and your jaw will drop because you see how the foundations were built from where you are and it is amazing. 70s-60s-50s, rock,big band, jazz,blues, ragtime, romantic, classical, baroque, renaissance, chant...And then laterally in those eras you can go into styles and genres. They were my favorite band and my older sister and her boyfriend were nice enough to let me tag along with them since I didn't even have my driver's license yet. Edit to add I also almost died to this song...the memory just popped into my head after reminiscing about the concert I mentioned above. I was on my way to the beach to meet up with my best friend who was already down there. There was an 18 wheeler driving slowly in the left lane (4 lane highway with 2 lanes on each side but out in the country). I moved into the right lane to pass him and he took a right turn into a driveway (didn't see that coming). I swerved to the right barely missing his cab and ended up laying my car down into a drainage ditch that ran along the right side of the highway. When I came to a stop this song was still playing on my cassette deck. True story!

That double neck guitar is a regular guitar on the bottom and a 12 string guitar on the top. On the 12 string guitar you play it like a normal 6 string guitar, but you play 2 strings at the same time which are tuned an octave apart. The result is that the guitar sounds very full and rich.

I am truly fortunate to have seen Led Zep at Knebworth in 1979, this was one of their encores. and yes JHB was on drums. His last time live I believe. I am sure my 20 year old self in 79 would have been pleased and amazed that someone his age circa 45 years later would still feel the same emotion. This song and band are for Life

Led Zeppelin set the bar so high that few if any could match. Four master musicians came together and created an irresistible package. It’s no wonder they disbanded when John Bonham died, you just can’t replace the irreplaceable!

Led Zeppelin 4 was released today November 8th 1971 so this song is now 51 years old today and I’m 54 just to give you some perspective! Enjoy! Also this will sound trivial to some but at 3:43 On here the full sound of the original Jimmy’s guitar and John Paul’s recorders and bass it reminds me of being baptized in the warm water of the church ⛪️ baptismal pool! It takes my breath away!

Hey Verdy, Enjoying your reaction and comments. It's always a pleasure. You commented about Zeppelin's rock and roll song from their studio album 4. You had mentioned that it must be fun to do live. The title as you may know of a live album with that song is, 'The Song Remains the Same'. I recommend giving that a listen. Instead of two separate guitars in different ranges you get only one. But Jimmy is all over that one guitar. It is riotous and well worth the listen. Stay cool and keep on rocking, good lady!!!

😍 Exactly as they wrote in the comments before me! At first I regretted not having subtitles so I could at least have an automatic translation, but your reactions are familiar even without knowing English! It is a pleasure to see that even after so long this music brings joy! 😍

If you want the best Zep. Bootlegs from 1970-72. Try Oakland, NY and LA September 1970. The best!

How The West Was Won I think will be the best, as it has better audio quality and Zep there still at their best.

@@z483gk Good show with a better recording. But those medleys from 70 are out of this world. Jimmy ripping the Scotty Moore licks. Too bad it was not captured in film.

@@Kire2112 hey - I recently watched whole concert of Greta Van Fleet in 2022. Holy shit - they're Led Zeppelin reincarnated! They jamming in their songs for 15-20 minutes, guitarist straight up have all mannerisms of Jimmy Page, and playing as good. Singer is freaking amazing too! Whole band is rocking, and it's not 70's! I encourage you to check it out!
