@all most of the time I have a decent amount to say, and will voice my opinion on a song and/or what I think its about. However, I can't really say as much when I listen to the cranberries. I think it has something to do with Dolores not being with us anymore. I get a little emotional and can't really say as much. Either way, I hope you enjoy the reaction.
@EC-dz3fb
@EC-dz3fb Год назад
I think many of us get what you're trying to say. Dolores' voice sounds haunting and ethereal, while simultaneously familiar and utterly foreign. There's something about it that "alerts" our primal being, if that makes any sense? She was a beautiful, misunderstood banshee. We are poorer without her presence. ♡

Being of Irish ancestry both sides of my family, from Boston, growing up 60s/70s/80s. Knowing of the Northern Irish troubles, and though far removed from them in the US. There were sides taken, and as happens when you grow older, different outlooks, and recognizing that stupidity was the reason for too long a time of strife and hurt. That being said, the very first time I heard the first stanza of lyrics to this incredible song, I could tell exactly what it was about. The lyrics mid song: It’s the same old theme. Since nineteen-sixteen. Absolutely, for me crystallized the feelings of how long, stupid, and sad the “troubles” were. There are many who understand the history inside the lyrics to this song, that feel the same way. Delores struck an emotional nerve for many people in this masterpiece.

Thank you so much for letting us see and experience your journey with this band, it means so much to me seeing you moved and enjoying the same music that has touched me all these years. Such a shame that you didn't react to the official music video, in which the imagery is just as powerful as the song itself, particularly the crucified angel children screaming as another child gets killed in the war. That scene hits people hard. As others have already commented, the song was written in response to the deaths of two little boys in Warrington, England, who were blown up by an IRA bomb while out, it is said, buying a Mother's Day card. Hence the lyric "Another mother's breaking heart is taking over ..." It is important to understand that the bombing was by the IRA, who, like the Cranberries, are Irish, while the children who were killed were English (the "enemy", in the minds of the IRA), so the song is politically neutral regarding the conflict over Northern Ireland and is just calling for an end to the violence. To add to the tragedy of the song, two decades later, singer Dolores drowned in the bath in a hotel room, after heavy drinking. Note also that the IRA were responsible for several high profile terrorist attacks, including the assassination in 1979 of Lord Mountbatten, a senior member of the British Royal Family. The IRA have however calmed down quite a bit in recent decades.
@auldfouter8661
@auldfouter8661 Год назад
The bombing that killed Mountbatten also killed two boys on board aged 14 and 15. An elderly lady also died the next day from her injuries, She was grandmother to one of the boys..
@benwu7980
@benwu7980 Год назад
The live version (Paris 1999) at least showed there had been progress, largely due to the Good Friday Agreement the previous year. Though some splinter groups still continue a campaign. It must be noted for context that it was not simply a case of the IRA bombing British places, the UVF had been pretty active over the years, like the Dublin & Monaghan co-ordinated bombings ( which was the largest fatality count of the Troubles), and just after this song was released, they also killed 6 people in a pub for watching a football game.

The video is equally incredibly buddy. The song was written by Dolores on the back of the Irish troubles predominately the IRA who had planted a bomb in a metal rubbish bin, outside a McDonald’s on a busy Saturday morning before Mother’s Day. It ultimately detonated injuring 100’s and killing two children aged 13, and 3.

Thank you for your reaction, I remember when this song came out and it was a bit different from the rest of their songs, but it was truly great and powerful and heavy rock song. Dolores O'Riodan was an extraordinary singer and she is deeply missed, she gave us some pretty amazing music. This song is about terrorism and war, what can be more timely' in the 90's the Troubles in Ireland was something almost random and remote, but in the decades since both have become an every day thing. In that way, this song was also very prescient about our time, even more than 1994. R.I.P. Dolores.

I think what's getting to you about their songs is the passion with which they are sung... I've been listening to this song since it was released and every time it brings a tear to my eye.. I'm British and know exactly what she is singing about and I'm also old enough (yes, another old git here).. to be in my mid 20's in the 1970's when the troubles in Northern Ireland escalated to shootings and bombings and the British Army had to occupy Northern Ireland fron 1969 to 2007 to try to stop it... of course it didn't and the religious sectarianism is still there but ever since the Good Friday agreement the violence has stopped... (mainly). Ireland has been a hotbed of problems for the British for centuries and this song highlights the reality of the ordinary man's suffering.... IN MY OPINION.. Keep on Rocking.

" All that is necessary for evil to thrive, is for good Men to do nothing." A quote attributed to Albert Einstein. This song makes me think of that, like she is calling us all zombies, and she's right. I know her words about it suggest it is about a specific incident in a specific war. Such a powerful message from a Mother it feels like. Best rock song I've ever heard I think. So strange, but beautiful. Rocks hard. When the violence causes silence who are we mistaken? We cower intellectually from any responsibility or thought of progress on that subject, we excuse it, we even excuse the racket it is, the greed of powerful people we do it for. It ain't us, our families. But it is on us. We know who runs the world, and to what means, until we are asked to do something about it. A lot of human society is geared toward escaping, playing pretend, avoiding substantive downer conversations. So we do what comes easy to us. Don't worry, I've seen many a reactor defeated by this song, you'll be beaten down intellectually and right as rain, not ready to tackle any evil, by morning.
