Reaction to the greatest guitar solo (Pink Floyd live) 

This is one of those songs that really speaks to addicts in recovery. In the song some asks "Can to tell me where it hurts?" It is understanding that the emptiness inside is a pain of the soul that is for many addicts the realization that is the first step to recovery.

David Gilmore is by far my favorite guitarist in my 60+ years. He’s not the fastest but the soul he creates from his solos can’t be matched. Thru the 70’s I saw most all of the great bands of the time.👍

Gosh the second solo brings me to tears every time. I’m 55 and it still makes me cry 😢

This dates me terribly, but I had the privilege of seeing PF on their Dark Side of the Moon tour in 1973. To say it was a life-changing experience is no exaggeration.

Gilmour is one of those rare guitarists that can wring one helluva jolt of emotion from his instrument. Never get tired of this vid.

In '94, before starting the stage build for Woodstock 94 at the Winston Farm in Saugerties NY, I was fortunate to build this stage at both Yankee and Giant's Stadium. For the Giant's shows, I ran a follow spot light during the performance. When we received the "Go" cue to bump on the mirror ball, the crowd went CRAZY! I still get chills, 27 years later. The sound quality was incredible with speaker towers built all the way around the top rim of the Stadium, a 300+ foot Surround Sound Experience!

Never saw them live. One of my greatest regrets not in music, but in life. This is jaw-dropping.

Having the amazing good fortune to see them 5 times on the Pulse tour, it was clear, even in the moment, that this performance, which was note perfect each night, was something special and beyond what had been done before. I had seen PF on previous tours, and this was certainly a performance without equal. i have been to over 150 concerts and many were phenomenal, but nothing quite matches the Pulse concert in general or David's guitar solo on Comfortable Numb. It stands alone.

I was at this concert too, not on the recording night but the one after which was just as good. Although the whole show was just amazing the thing I remember most vividly was when the mirror ball lit up, the ball was rotating and the entire hall lit up with thousand and thousands of small moving lights, all the walls, ceiling, people, everything, it was just magical. We didn't expect it either because the ball was hidden and then uncovered while everyone was watching the on-stage effects and the ceiling was dark. You can't get a complete idea of how good the show was from these videos, you can see it all, hear it all but you can't feel it, the tremendous heat from the fireworks, the volume of the music which went right through you. I looked around and people were just sat as if mesmerized, mouths open trying to take it all in. By far the greatest concert I've ever been to.

You cant really see it too much in the video, but when that gigantic disco ball opens up, it starts to blast lasers out everywhere all at once. This after seeing the inflatable pigs on either side of the stage.. also blasting lasers out of their eyes! And a crashing plane. It was a performance that has never been topped in my lifetime, and I used to work at all the events that came through. It was truly a remarkable experience. It's the GOAT

I've been privileged to have seen them four times in three different decades! I saw them in 74 for their "Dark Side of the Moon" tour which was phenomenal say the least!! So what I still think was the best concert they've ever done was performed in 1977 for their "In The Flesh" tour when Rodger Waters was still with them! For that show they played all of "Animals" followed by all of "Wish You Were Here" and half of "Dark Side Of the Moon" for their encore!! Then I saw them in 87 for the "Momentary Lapse of Reason" tour and this 94 "Pulse tour"! I've seen probably 100 concerts in my life from AC DC to Zeppelin and everyone in between alphabetically and though some of those shows had incredible music I've never seen a better show than any of the live Pink Floyd shows!! The lights the sound in the music were always perfect at those Floyd shows!!

This transcends being a concert performance. It is a powerful, unforgettable life experience.

As a *amateur* guitarist myself, and with my intense love of the guitar and guitar playing, I fkkn cherish David Gilmour. The guitar solos in this song are magnificent and they fill my soul. From a straight up lifelong Pink Floyd fan, this is a brilliant, beautiful perfect song.

To me, Gilmour is, without any doubt whatsoever, THE best guitarist: he speaks (to my) soul in a way I've never encountered with anyone else. I saw Pink Floyd in Tucson, AZ in the 70s. Dark Side of the Moon Concert was totally awesome. (Done in surround sound.) Way before their time. It was unbelievable. And yes, I was in my early twenties then so I am definitely aging myself. Love Pink Floyd to this day. They were phenomenal to say the least!!

I have seen them several times and they are incomparable to other " concerts". You leave a piece of yourself at each show, but you also get to carry a piece of it with you forever.

Musicians at their magical best,the feeling in that space must have been incredible.

First off, RIP keyboardist Rick Wright. 2nd...I highly, HIGHLY recommend you look up the websites of 2 Pink Floyd tribute bands -- Brit Floyd and Aussie Floyd, to see if they are touring and if they are and coming to Atlanta --- GO SEE THEM! Both are recommended by members of Pink Floyd themselves. They do a remarkable job in not only performing the music, but also recreating the light and stage production of the real Pink Floyd. They usually announce their appearances in the areas they are coming to do by being part of the local PBS pledge drive a month or so before they are set to appear in town. It will be well worth the time and effort. I am sure there are videos on You Tube. Great interpretations of the original music.

that is all one can say. david gilmour is one of the great guitar players of all time. there are many great guitar players but i would have to say he is perfect for pink floyd. i don't think any one else could have taken pink floyd to where david has taken them. thumbs up for pink floyd.

This could easily have been the finale of the Pulse concert. But, PF followed this with Run Like Hell. It could be argued that the light show for Run Like Hell was even better. I was fortunate to have seen them during the 90’s in Yankee Stadium and the Nassau Coliseum (when they filmed the Delicate Sound of Thunder DVD).

I've seen this at least 100 times but wanted to watch with you one more time. It's been fun to see you grow both metaphorically and otherwise. Keep doing you!

I'm glad to see the younger generations are learning to appreciate the music from generations past that is timeless! This is music and art and nobody did it better than Pink Floyd. Can't tell you how many times seen them but this concert had to see twice. It was truly epic!

You mentioned a choir Daniel - they didn't have that, but the Pulse tour did have three wonderful female backing singers and on 'Comfortably Numb' the support largely came from Sam Brown. Sam is a very talented singer in her own right with a solo UK top ten hit of her own and she also sang backing vocals on the 'Division Bell', a lot of Dave Gilmour's solo work and for other artists.

Back then I worked at a mall, and I had a friend who managed the music store... I had raved so much about this concert that when she received her shipment of the double cd, she brought it to me immediately and said, "It's not in my system yet, you can pay me tomorow!" lol Buying the DVD when IT came out was a no brainer!

"Now that's a performance", indeed. My God, that was stunning! I've never seen that video, and I think you for bringing it. Simply beautiful. (Quick story . . Like many, I recall exactly where I was when I first heard The Wall. White-knuckling it back from an ice-fishing excursion to Lake Mille Lacs, a couple of hours north of the Twin Cities. I was on Highway 35 and in a blizzard. A total white-out. Could hardly see where I was driving. My friend Jack says, "Oh Geez, I forgot I brought the new Pink Floyd CD." In response to out derisive mumbling -- how could he have forgot THAT? He put it in the player and it blew us away. Hung over from a near lethal alcohol and drugs binge, my friends and I lost it . . . in a good way. I pulled off the road, turned on the flashers and we just settled in to drift along with the snow. Unforgettable!)

Also, at the 1994 Pulse concert: "Sorrow" and "High Hopes" are epic. 🔥🔥🔥

The entire gig is awesome too and the HD version is finally getting a blu-ray release re-cut & remastered, on 18 Feb 2022, so that's something to look forward to.

As a devoted Pink Floyd fan for 50 years, I find it gratifying to see so many young listeners entering the Floydiverse and loving it. Welcome to a lifetime of mind-blowing enjoyment.

Saw them in Vancouver... 1994. Sat next to the soundboard, and the 20ft. wide mirrorball was amazing ! And THEN !?....... holy crap.

There will always be arguments over who is the greatest rock guitarist of all time, and who played the greatest solo. But is there another guitarist who is more satisfying to the soul than David Gilmour?

When it comes to pop/rock music, there is nothing like a live concert. A true musician will rise to the occasion when they're playing live. And it doesn't matter if it's Pink Floyd in a massive arena, some band you don't really know much about at a festival or some local kids performing in a bar for the first time. I usually will visit something like 8 to 12 live shows a year. In venues that will hold anything between 100 and 60,000 people. I can quite easily adapt to the new circumstances the pandemic throws at us, but if there's one thing I really miss these days, it's live concerts. As for Pink Floyd. I've only seen them live twice. In 1980 they were my first major concert (The Wall) at the age of 17. I revisited the band in 1989, when Roger Waters had already left the band. To make up for that I went to see Roger Water's live rendition of The Wall in 2013. None of the concerts were a let down in any way.

Daniel, please do Pink Floyd Echoes live in Pompeii, 1971-72, parts 1 and 2. Sure wish I'd seen PF live when I had the chance(s).

Sorry for so many comments but... When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look but it was gone I cannot put my finger on it now, the child is grown the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb. The best verse ever written, been tearing my heart out for 40 years, every time.

And this is how I spend an early Saturday evening, 4.5 months after this upload. The classics. The REAL classics. And enjoy it again through a much younger set of eyes. It never gets old.

Certainly one of the greatest guitarists. Definitely the cleanest soloist, and most precise.

Never saw them live but I did see the Roger Waters tour in 2008 where he did the entire DSOTM and it was amazing. First set was pickings from all albums, 2nd set was DSOTM. The sound was incredible! The first time I heard Time, the lyrics were so profound. As a teen I remember how the lyrics affected me and thought then how 10, 20, 30, 40 years from then they would ring even more profound! And it has! The 60’s roared in a phenomenal era in music and talent that will never be duplicated and I’m so glad the music and artists of our generation are being experienced and carried on by upcoming generations! We are all so blessed!

I was fortunate to work this Show at Shea and Giants Stadium in the Summer of '94. I started the "Steel In" , building the Stages for Woodstock '94, about a week later... That was a Great Summer for Rock and Roll!!

Daniel, really enjoyed your reaction to this. I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd on this Pulse tour at the Alamodome in San Antonio along with 47,000 fans! I had 18th row seats on the floor, and it was an experience of a lifetime. They played two sets and an encore. In one set they played Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish, and the other set was songs from The Division Bell and other of their popular songs. If you want to see the most amazing lighting of the show, watch the encore "Run Like Hell"!!!!

The most incredible moment in live concerts is when Comfortably Numb is performed.

The entire Pulse concert is like that.

I saw their final 2 tours. And their farewell tour was the ABSOLUTE PINNACLE OF LIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCE. 3 crews worked around the clock FOR A WEEK setting the shows up! And yet…as surreal & transportive as the effects were… The MUSIC WAS GREATER BY FAR! It was immense, epic in scope… I’ve seen many hundreds of concerts. But that was the absolute apex of live music experience. Watch the DVD to get a taste my friend! Okay m glad you’re sharing your experience getting into Pink Floyd. They were so much more than just a band to us, their music absolutely transcendent & transportive! Journey on brother, enjoy your aural adventures! 👊🍻

Daniel, I'm so glad you got to experience this at last, a stunning performance. But there is not a bad song on the Division Bell tour (Pulse), but there are some definitely worth checking out, High Hopes, Keep Talking, Run Like Hell, Sorrow and One of These Days they are all awesome.

I was at the Pulse show in New Jersey, July 1994. It was an absolutely unbelievable experience. Being in the middle of it (music, guitar solos, lights) was some thing I will never forget. That and 9/11.

This is the one concert that got away from me. I had tickets to see this concert in my home town back in 1994.. And then a month before the concert I moved to another country and had to give the ticket to my dad. Never did get to see Floyd live, that was the one and only chance I had.

One or the greatest guitar solo/effects of all time. Can't imagine seeing that after a few dobies!

Having been going to live concerts from early Stones/Hendrix/PF right through to Oasis; this was the best of them all. Lucky to go 6 times to the Earls Court gigs, having been to Wembley and Dockland a few years early for the DSOT leg of the tour.

Hi, really enjoy your reactions. You clearly have a great feel for music and a love for guitar solos. I’m not one for ranking music, as it’s all about taste but Dave Gilmore is a wonderful guitarist, for sure. Worth checking out two other astonishing solos. Jimi Hendrix doing “Machine Gun”, live at Fillmore East. This was Jimi’s attempt to express the chaos and fear experienced by soldiers in the Vietnam War, through the strings of his guitar. The great Miles Davies, who was present, described this as “not just the greatest guitar solo but the greatest solo in any genre, ever”. The other is Peter Green, of the original Fleetwoood Mac band, doing “Got a Good Mind to Give up Living” live. You can hear the pain in every phrase and his delicacy and tone are unparalleled. BB King, who knew a bit about the blues, said “Peter Green was the only guitarist to make me sweat. He had the sweetest tone I ever heard”. Both worth a listen 😎

Spectacular stage show to highlight great song

A little memory.... I can't remember how many times I saw Pink Floyd live from the Crystal Palace Garden Party onwards.... but one of the best was when in 1973 all my friends had managed to get tickets for Dark Side of The Moon in London... but not me. Gutted... until my friend Kevin Case's girl friend left him and he sold me her ticket.... it was seat AA26.... ummmm 27 rows back in (I think?) Earls Court.... anyway, when we got there my seat was not 27 rows back.... but the front row in the middle seat... lined up with the centre drum of the drum kit. Drenched in dry ice flowing off the stage and totally magical.... beat that!

incredibly I was living in London when Dark Side of the Moon came out and was in the front row, centre two seats for the the world premiere in Earls Court. Amazing.

Your voice level sounds good to me! Yes-this IS the best guitar solo of all time. I regret that Roger wasn't with the rest of them during this concert-as he is one of the big reasons why this masterpiece of a song (what I consider to be the best song of all time) exists at all. Still, this guitar solo by the other-worldly Gilmore, is the best of the best. I cannot listen to this song without getting goosebumps and it's multiplied in this particular performance.

"Comfortably Numb" on Pulse has been the greatest - until recently - with the remastered release of "A Delicate Sound Of Thunder" - where "Comfortably numb", blows the Pulse version out of the water. Not possible I hear you cry ! - Well there is only one way to find out ! Don't say you were not told. Lol

Saw them on their Animals tour at the old Cleveland before they tore it down. It was a circular stadium. An of course it was at night with a rainy mist in the air which added to the atmosphere. Bet concert I've ever been to.

YES Daniel, I DO remember when Pink Floyd was maybe the BEST recording group ever. Sitting around toking a few and zoning out to Dark Side of the Moon was a FAVORITE thing to do. The instruments were, and still are, mesmerizing. Thank you for bringing this back for me. Love your reactions and reviews.

I was lucky enough to see them three times including the Pulse Tour!! There is nothing you can compare them to, they were in a class of their own!! For me they are the GOAT!

Hey Daniel - I just want to say thanks for keeping me entertained through a difficult Christmas - it’s so great seeing your reaction to songs that I have loved for decades - and i’m often surprised by the info you give with your lyric analysis and song/artist research! If you don’t already know this song (as a metal fan), how about doing a reaction video to Stargazer by Rainbow (from the Rainbow Rising album) from ‘76. Also, how about classic era David Bowie (‘71 - ‘74) - e.g. Life on Mars, Starman, Rock n roll suicide. Finally, check out All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople (‘72), or Boy by Ian Hunter (‘75) (You’d love the lyrics)

I saw PF a few years before this performance, but basically the same show. Just incredible! AND this emotional rock out was not the finale! They ended with Run Like Hell when I saw them. I walked out like I had been taken to the Pink Floyd Universe and now was dropped off back at earth.

Daniel, I can also recommend Brit Floyd to you. We saw them this fall and they were phenomenal. Next up: Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets tour. He, of course, is Pink Floyd's drummer. We're really looking forward to that as well, and he's going to play all old stuff, from before Dark Side of the Moon. We were fortunate enough to see them in '94 and caught Roger Waters on tour, who also put on a great show. It warms my heart that you said they are one of the older bands you wish you could have seen live because you are right; David Gilmour IS the greatest guitarist. His playing is lush, liquid, beautiful, and transporting.

You looked surprised a the chorus. I wrote this before; if you either didn't read it or forgot. But Gilmore singers the chorus as Pink; while Waters did the main vocals of the doctor. This is why this song for me will never be performed perfectly without both.

Pink Floyd , Gothenburg , Sweden , 1994....Still the most amazing show I been too...

The thing about it is that when "The Wall" first came out, Pink Floyd because of the massiveness of the stage performance they only toured it in 4 places. I heard you say that you would had liked to have seen the Wall tour. On that tour they played two places here in the states which were Los Angeles and New York. And even in their own country of England they only played London. Then they played Dortmund and West Germany. And it does sound like a choir when you hear women singing, but he only has 3 female singers behind him. At one time they did hold the Guinnis Worlds record for best stage light show. But the chart topper that kills me is The Dark Side of The Moon album. It was on the Billboard music chart longer then anyother album in history. And I don't think anybody will every break it. It was on the Billboard Top 200 Chart for 959 weeks! That's incredible! That would come to 220.6 months which would be 18.6 years! Now that's just crazy!

I was lucky enough to catch that tour when they came to British Columbia. I was about your age...probably. It was my introduction to this amazing band.
