One thing about Abloy locks: they're very hard to pick open =) Also, yeah, I happily pay my taxes considering everything they pay for. That "church tax" is a thing but you only need to pay it if you belong to the state church. I don't, so I don't pay church tax.

In regards of the climate, I personally like that we fave 4 very distinct seasons and they all have their pros and cons. Hardest time for me is late autumn, October and November, when it's very dark and depressing. It gets better after the snow falls, it instantly gets more beautiful and not so dark anymore.

The taxes are not that high at all! Corporate tax rate is a fixed 20% and capital gains is anywhere from 0% to a max 35%. Payroll tax is also not that high. If you make 1000000€ and have no deductions(which you definitely have if you're making a million euros) then the tax rate is 42%! But almost no one pays payroll tax who makes more than 100 000€, they pay capital gains tax.

It takes money to run church. Translated from Wikipedia: "Church tax in Finland is a tax paid by members of the Evangelical Lutheran and Orthodox Church of Finland who pay municipal tax. The church tax is paid to the local parish or association of parishes. The tax rate varies by location. The church tax applies to those who belong to the aforementioned churches. Other religious communities do not have the right to tax, but they can charge a membership fee like other associations."

I spoke with a friend of mine who is in the local church board about the church tax (I don't pay it, non-religious), and he raised an interesting point: a lot of the tax money goes to graveyard upkeep costs and cultural sites, so it's not that much of supporting active religious practicing. Those who want to practice more actively form their own groups and fund them, the tax just covers the upkeep of the sites.

Just today i bumped into someone and literally said "oho". I dont think that this is the whole story however, because bumping into someone takes 2 people, if the other person had paid more attention we would not have touched, so my reaction isnt just "oh shit i hit someone, i should say sorry", its more like "oh we didnt pay attention, well im not angry so i'll make it look like it was my fault and carry on with my life". Of course if it is clearly just my fault, i will say im sorry, i have done so before, but most of the time i just acknowledge that we got too close to eachother and move on, the situation cannot become awkward if we never even look at eachother.

Finns don't say 'please' as there isn't a word for that in Finnish language. Some say 'kiitti' or 'kiitos' (thanks) when receiving something or 'sori' or 'oho' when they bump into someone. The 'oho' is more like 'sorry, I realized I bumped into you and it was an accident'. Just a shorter version.

Weather is a really funny thing for us Finns. When it's autumn and the first "Cold" weathers come... like -5 degrees celsius... After the warm summer, we will automatically grab our full winter gear from our storages. But when it's spring, it's the other way around... After that long and cold winter, the first time we see the temperature go up to -5 celsius we instantly grab our shorts and t-shirts from the drawer and casually take a stroll in the streets. I have been doing this for all my life and I can promise you, tourists wearing full winter gear have given me a stare when I walk past them wearing only shorts while they are wearing full winter gear and it's August and like -5 degrees out there

Looking at couple of the more positive aspects of these. First off, winters are really damn dark, yes, but it is worth mentioning that summers are the complete opposite. During midsummer, the sun never really goes down, so it's actually quite bright outside even at the middle of the night. Second, while we do have high taxes, I'm super thankful we don't have the system they have in the States, for example, where you yourself have to calculate how much you've made and how much you have to pay and all that jazz. Over here, the tax office keeps track of the basics for most people and sends you a prefilled tax card, based on your earnings, that you can then make changes to, if the need be, or you can just roll with the prefilled one. Not to mention, that if you estimated your earnings too high, no worries, you don't lose that money, but rather get it back as tax returns next year.

You can decide if you want to "belong" to the church. If you don't then you don't need to pay the tax. If you don't belong to the church you can't have a church wedding and you can't be a godfather or a godmother. Also if you are poor and you are not doing so well you can get aid from the church.

Customer service depends on many things! If you are looking for a specific fishing bait and the worker doesn't understand anything about fishing, they will just tell you " You can find fishing supplies on the isle 13, ask more there " ( If there are anyone there ), but i see this kind of a behaviour as a win-win. If you do not know, just point to the direction of the supplies, right? The most depressing thing is to bother some summerworker at the local supermarket about something that they don't understand, and they need to pretend they know what they are selling while we both know that neither of us are fishermen and we stand there awkwardly looking at those baits, till the clerk "recommends" the most expensive one, or tells me to go buy a shovel and dig some worms, because that works too. BUT if I ask about " Where are the toilet papers? ", still i like that this dude/dudette doesn't come with me to the isle, but tells me the number of the isle. BUT BUT ALSO ALSO: If i ask that " Where are your hot sauce section, i can't seem to find it?" THEN it is okay for the clerk to show me, and after a small " Kiitos ", he/she needs to be going away, because i don't need help anymore. So this point on the video doesn't click with me fully. I'll take the " Forward, left turn, right turn, number 18 isle. There ." Perfect and have a nice day.

Please, make a reaction video about Andrew Zimmern Bizarre Foods - Finland. There are three 15 minutes long videos of that episode on RU-vid (part1, part2 etc...), so you can make a whole series of videos out of those. Good stuff! We like it. And if you ever visit Finland (hope you do) you should taste fried reindeer meat slices with mashed potatoes (poronkäristys) - and cloudberries with whipped cream for dessert. It's so good...it's...It's pure ambrosia - the food of the gods. It really is beyond anything you've ever tasted. I've been to Ireland, I've been to New Zealand, I've been here and there - but never found a match to "poronkäristys" and cloudberries. Not even close. It's something else.

I have never forgotten my keys, but that is only because I am absolutely OCD about checking and rechecking that I have my keys, wallet and phone before going out. Sometimes more than three times just to confirm I really have them. My memory is finnicky, that adds to the obsession to check my belongings before exiting the main door. Often times right before closing the door, I still re-check everything.

I told my elderly neigbor how to remember the tab position: Tab is up - "Ylös, ulos ja lenkille = Get up and go out for a walk." Tab is down- "Istu alas ja rentoudu= sit down and relax." Abloy locks are very difficult to lockpick; the 'commercial lock' that is shown here is (as I recall) second only to one with a microchip identification when it comes to security. And doors also have steel plates over the edge where the lock is located, and small metal pegs on the hinge side, that are there to prevent the door being lift out from the frame. All this is to prevent burglars. True, taxing here is pretty high, but on the flip side we get so much back and while stuff like food etc is probably pricier than in many countries, but it is safe to eat. When it comes to food items, I aim to get food produced in Finland, even if there is stuff from another european country, that's a no for me. I recall our health and hygiene regulations are even stricter than what EU mandates. So things like food poisoning or diseases spreading are quite rare and get investigated thoroughly, with media ofen following the proceedings all the way.

Taxes are somewhat high, but that's why our standard of living is also one of the best there is. We have free education and such, but the money has to come from somewhere - so tax it is. I don't mind. I actually prefer it. Some folks complain, because they seem not to realize that life is short and will end someday. They don't understand that everything we have in our lives (money, houses, cars, stuff) is actually not really ours to keep. It's just stuff we leave behind when time comes for us to move into greener pastures. So, since the money I earn during my lifetime is not actually mine to have forever - I might as well pay taxes to make this country a better place for myself and others while I'm still here. That's how I see it.

Flying to poland costs like 30€ at best, then take a interrailing ticket to go to southern europe. You can go to the Spain by this method with only 500€ and this includes the flight back from Poland -> Finland. For two persons. People usually take those custom made travel agency trips that will cost you like 700€ per person as is, atleast! Including Hotels and travelling to the hotel and some other services, but with some knowhow and elbow grease, you can travel cheaper as a fin. AirBnB, cheaper flying agency, time to plan and a lot of sitting in the local trains will get you far, it is not that expensive when living out of the borders.

Finland tax system. When you get salary your working, you pay taxes like 10-30% seems legit. but when you got unemployment or get even pension payments, you are earn that money working, you have to still pay like 25%+ taxes those money. Like you got 4000€ salary/month, you pai like 27% taxes. Then you get pension like 2000@/month, you pay 26% taxes for that money

The living costs have increased a bit, but i would say, not that dramatically. Only thing that has been dramatically increased is the fuel and electricity prices due to the crisis. Customer service in Finland...yes. Well, let me put it this way; One Finnish telecom service provider (called Sonera) had tv-commercials back in the day, and their slogan was "Kuinka voin auttaa?" - which in English means "How can I help you?". Now, think about that; that is a normal everyday phrase or question anywhere else in the world - but not in Finland. In Finland it's so rare, that it's been elevated to a slogan! :)

Germany doesn't have that type of lock, that automatically locks without a key when closing the door. We only have a knob (no movement, no function) at the front door. You'll need a key to open from the outside, but you can open it from the inside by the 'Türklinke' (door handle). How do Finnish people deal with this scenario? You leave your home, close the door, mind your own business. You now have trapped your family inside, if they don't have a key.
@MrGragtor
@MrGragtor 11 месяцев назад
You can always open the door from inside. Usually done without the key. Usually front doors have a handle and twisty "knob". The knob controls the lock and handle has other funktions like opening the dooor when not locked. Appartments usually only have the twisty knob and a handle just to pull from.

I keep a spare key in my mom's apartment, she lives little over 3km away (me and my siblings all have keys to her place). My sister lives half time with our mom and the other half with her (my sister's) dad who lives very close to our mom, my brother lives about at 2h distance with a car. If my spare key wasn't with my mom it would probably be with my sister or at my uncle's or god-mother's place (both live close to my mom) or someone else that I trust. Fun story once few years ago during winter I was visiting my mom, like I do about twice a week and it was over 11 at night when I left my mom's place and I walk slow (especially during winter) so it took me almost 1h to get home. I was around midnight at the front door of my apartment building when I noticed I didn't have my keys with me so I had to call my mom who luckily hadn't gone to sleep yet to check if I left had the keys there and I had. My mom had to leave my keys to a hiding place outside because she had to go to sleep and I had nice extra 6km walk and in the end it was about 2 in the morning when I finally got home. After that I made it a habit to check I have my keys before I open a door to get out and before close that door.

There isn't a Finn who hasn't been locked out of their home. Then you'll have to call the guy and he'll be pissed off even though his fee shows a bump in the GDP figures. You interrupted his drinking. You fool. You're ashamed but your consolation is that you're drunk too and it's night, the bars are closed and its freezing outside so you really had no choice but to humbly ask for help. At least you had a minute of not thinking about how poor you are after taxes, especially the alcohol tax.

I think "oho" or "oho sori" is good enough. I would be more "pissed" if they started babbling like in that re-enactment.

If those tax rates are just income tax, they are not realistic at all. In Finnish terms I don't have a well paid job (in between the 2nd and 3rd level shown) and my rate is 13%. However, get over €40k and the rates increase very quickly.

I do not like paying taxes - hwo does.? but when I get sick - it is free to get treatment. It is free to children to go to school. And by the way you do not have to pay anything to church if you do not want to.

Church tax is for everyone who has born into a family who is part of the lutheran church, you can opt out by leaving the church which everyone with a brain at 2023 should do.... Anyway a lot of people just pay the tax even though they dont believe in the teachings of the church.

Mämmi is sweat rye breaad dish. We eat it on easter. Mämmi looks like sh+t. All Finns don't like mämmi, but specially skier Juha Mieto likes it. We nprmally eat mämmi with milk. I eat it naturally or with whisped cream.

The thing that will screw your life the most in Finland is the healthcare system, because it's almost impossible to get treatment for your health problems, so then you have to go private and pay for private treatment on top of the public healthcare that you already paid for in your taxes.

This is just complete bullshit. I've lived in three regions Varsinais-Suomi, Pirkanmaa and Kanta-Häme and I have never experienced that or heard anyone experience that. Let me guess you live in Helsinki and had something minor and had to wait for over a week for a doctor because it was so minor?
