Reaction to Tim Minchin - Play It Safe (Sydney Opera House 50th Anniversary)

Tim was commissioned to write a song to commemorate the Sydney Opera House turning 50. Tim uses his trademark wit and irony to tell the story of one of the most iconic building's in the world. Almost impossible to build, the futuristic design by Danish Architect Jorn Utzon was controversial at a time when Australia was heavily conservative and somewhat dismissive of 'the arts'. Tim sings what many thought: 'we should play it safe' with the building. Thankfully we didn't. The orange peel at the start is a reference to the Architects solution to building his fanciful sail-like design. The geometry of each section of the building (each sail or shell) fits into a globe. It came to him when cutting up an orange into segments!

Tim was the perfect choice to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House! Just a brilliant job and so many great cameos!

I saw Tim live for the first time a few nights go. It was the best show I've ever been to. So incredibly talented, intelligent and charismatic. I love Tim's life philosophies.

Ur right, the entire song and it's message is sort of sarcastic or ironic. Constructing a Building with architecture as unique as the Opera house was definitely not playing it safe. Also a few little Easter eggs. "Leave the weird ideas to the Danish" = the architect of the Opera house was Danish. And the Orange Peel at the beginning = if you join all the sails of the building together It forms a perfect sphere. Supposedly the architect got the idea whilst munching on an orange.
