I used to watch this video almost every day on MTv... when it was NEW!!!

I was born in 1964 the last year of the Baby Boomers. I am 59 years old and am so glad I grew up in the 60's and 70's and 80's a Golden Age of music. The artists would cross Genres and write music for and perform with each other, It was all about the Music. No autotune and the Artists would perform at least as good as their studio version. They would often sing better live.

Eddie Van Halen was taught piano as a kid before he started playing guitar... he also could play drums. In fact, his brother Alex Van Halen originally started on guitar w/ Eddie on drums... but they switched after Eddie showed more promise playing the guitar while Alex also changed the game for drummers in Van Halen. The problem in the early 80's was that original Van Halen singer David Lee Roth did not approve of keyboards/ synthesizers on Van Halen albums and refused for years to sing 'Jump' (which became Van Halen's only #1 single) ... But Eddie Van Halen insisted in 1983 that 'Jump' (and the song "I'll wait") would be on the album '1984' w/ a lot of keyboards. There were still guitar-driven songs like - 'Hot for teacher' ... 'Top Jimmy' ... 'Girl gone bad'... It proved to be the end of the original Van Halen by 1985... David Lee Roth was not feeling the new synthesizer-heavy music that Eddie Van Halen was writing... he was not the best live singer but he was the rock star in Van Halen w/ his blond mane and acrobatic stage moves. Roth was more interested in starting a movie career after his solo EP 'Crazy from the heat' was released in '85, so Van Halen apparently sacked him. Thankfully, they found a better singer Sammy Hagar, who joined Van Halen in 1986 and made the album '5150' a #1 album. Some of his best Van Halen songs - 'Right now' ... 'Poundcake' ... 'Dreams'... "The seventh seal"... 'Humans being' As of now in 2024, Sammy Hagar and Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony have been touring w/ guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son) to pay homage to (the late) Eddie Van Halen... and have been playing huge venues. Meanwhile, David Lee Roth attempted to jumpstart his solo career... but at his age and his limited live appeal, Roth was unable to generate fanfare as a solo act and the original singer of Van Halen... He opted to retire from music and focus on art projects Alex Van Halen (drums) recently published his autobiography and has also quit the music business apparently, selling his drums and gear recently and staying out of the spotlight.

Gosh I remember when this hit the radio and MTV late in 1983 I think it was ? Anyhow was a huge hit in 1984 ( album same name 1984) just a few months before my 16th birthday. Awesome music that decade good times.

Hi ladies... I must let you know, the true Van Halen is not Jump, it is easily the worst crap the David Lee Roth incarnation has done. The band started sinking in 1982 with Diver Down, which is still okay, For some hard rockin' Van Halen check out their earlier albums prior to Diver Down, Jump is nothing but candy store pop, best of luck..
