In 1993, Def Leppard released an album on unreleased songs and former b-sides, called Retro Active. This album closed the door on a chapter of Def Leppard's early career from their beginning in the 70's to the rise of grunge in the early 90's. The first track off this album was a track originally written for the Hysteria album that didn't make the cut, 'Desert Song'. This song became one of the last songs to be released by Def Leppard, showcasing the songwriting and guitar-playing of Steve Clark, who died on January 8th, 1991. It was a hit on U.S. rock radio, reaching number twelve on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. On a day off during their 7 Day Weekend Tour, Elliott composed lyrics while listening to the track. Joe assembled the band and 'Desert Song' remains the only Def Leppard song to feature both Clark's guitar playing and Clark's successor Vivian Campbell on background vocals, although Campbell's contributions are uncredited in the Retro Active liner notes.
Cheers, enjoy Reactionize, and as always...ROCK ON!
