Welcome to Reactionize, where we're on a quest to react and review every single Def Leppard studio track ever recorded, including some live recordings, b-sides, and other rarities. So step inside, walk this way, and get ready for Reactionzie!
In 1993, Def Leppard released an album on unreleased songs and former b-sides, called Retro Active. This album closed the door on a chapter of Def Leppard's early career from their beginning in the 70's to the rise of grunge in the early 90's. The first track off this album was a track originally written for the Hysteria album that didn't make the cut, 'Desert Song'. This song became one of the last songs to be released by Def Leppard, showcasing the songwriting and guitar-playing of Steve Clark, who died on January 8th, 1991. It was a hit on U.S. rock radio, reaching number twelve on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. On a day off during their 7 Day Weekend Tour, Elliott composed lyrics while listening to the track. Joe assembled the band and 'Desert Song' remains the only Def Leppard song to feature both Clark's guitar playing and Clark's successor Vivian Campbell on background vocals, although Campbell's contributions are uncredited in the Retro Active liner notes.
Cheers, enjoy Reactionize, and as always...ROCK ON!

This song makes me miss Steve soo much.. I wished they would pull this one out live some day, just do it. The riffs, and the harmony solo at the end, where collen's solo ends with a run that clarks solo mirrors in the OPPOSITE direction is everything I miss in Leppard now. 30 yrs old and if they released this today, it be a massive hit on rock radio. rip, steve.

I couldn't agree more, John, and thanks so much for commenting. I love this song, both musically and lyrically. It's so interesting, too, that it was written as an instrumental during the Hysteria sessions, and then lyrics were added later after Steve's passing. It was a time when you could see Leppard writing darker tunes with the musical climate changing, tragedies within the band, and then personal issues. It made songs like Desert Song such a brilliant time-stamp of where they were at that time. And I'm with you, would love to hear this live one day...such a killer tune. Love Vivian, but Clark is irreplaceable. Hope you enjoy the Reactionize series, we will try and cover all their releases! Cheers ~A

Absolutely love this song! So good! Such a hidden gem and so underrated. The album as a whole is very underrated so sad it was overlooked by the times it fell under. Kick ass jam. Could've easily been on Pyro or Hysteria. I am a proud owner of this album. Great reaction as always

Indeed, I was saying earlier, I love their entire catalog but there is something special when they lay into some heavier tracks! Cheers!

The lyrics were written by Joe all about Mick Ronson's cancer. Dark and Moody, but can give you chills and is so very thought provoking.

I didn't realize that! Thanks for sharing, and yes, I absolutely love this track. Such an underrated song, and lyrically, it is so well done. So much of Retro would have been center-piece material for other bands, showing Leppard's talent for writing solid songs that resonate with people. Cheers! ~A

I've glued to the together, Desert Song & Fractured Love, into one big heavy beast. They both go together like Bringin' On The Heartbeak & Switch 625, We Will Rock You & We Are The Champions and Holiday & Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, so I have a ten and a half minute rocking masterpiece. On my Hysteria Ultimate tracklisting, I added this between Women and Rocket (also putting I Wanna Be Your Hero between Love Bites and Sugar and Ring Of Fire between Run Riot and Hysteria.

And the best part about this, and Fractured Love, is pure unadulterated Steve Clark crunch...!

I love Vivian, but I always wonder what a 2024 Leppard would sound like if Clark were still with us. He had such a talent for writing, and he didn't have to show off to do it... it was all about melody, hooks, and enhancing the vocals and other instruments around him. He was truly a special talent.

This one is definitely a hitter... love when Leppard pulls out some heavy tracks. Where you a fan of Retro Active? Hard to believe an album of b-sides was better then what most of their peers could pen. Cheers!

Def Leppard cleaned out their closet of unreleased tracks from their Hysteria writing sessions on Retroactive. I liked Retroactive better than Adrenalize. Desert Song and Fractured Love are in my DL top 25.

I'll admit Desert Song and Fractured Love back to back are money. In fact, as big as Two Steps Behind was, I feel like Desert Song and FL are the two standouts on Retro (along with 'I Wanna Be Your Hero'...love that song!). Cheers, George!

Would have given Adrenalize a delightful kick. Which song it replaces? Up for discussion.

Yes! And what's cool about that is that when lyrics were finally added, they were writing much darker material that foreshadowed Slang. Such a good song and album for that matter!

This song was leftover from the Hysteria sessions. Should have been on the album instead of fluff like Love & Affection or Hysteria.

Love & Affection is such an underrated song. It's one of my faves from Hysteria. Why do people hate on it? It's definitely not "filler".

Very nice! I was blown away when I threw Retroactive in and this came through the speakers. Only Def Leppard can release a 'b-sides' album that blows the doors off of others' studio albums.

100% This came out with very little fanfare and with the right promotion, could have been even bigger than it was. Imagine selling two million plus of your b-sides and knowing it's better than 90% of your peers' best efforts.
