(Reactions) House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 - Meleys vs Sunfire and Vhagar 

Not sure if a lot of people missed it, but it was Meleys who grabbed Vhagar, it is part of the strategy in order to claw the belly/lungs. It is also why Meleys succeeded at dropping Vhagar to the ground, she was the one that let go.

To die as a dragon rider the way she wanted, or be captured and tortured by the greens? In the end, she knew there was only one outcome. Even if she fled, there was no guarantee that she would survive future battles. I give her props for going out like a champ, fighting for the right side til the bitter end.

Many question why Rhaenys chose to turn back instead of retreating, but her strategic reasoning is crucial to understand. The Greens' most formidable weapon is Vhagar, ridden by Aemond. Though Vhagar, at 180 years old, remains incredibly powerful, her age brings vulnerabilities, and her rider, Aemond, lacks significant battle experience. Rhaenys recognized this unique opportunity. Meleys, her dragon, is a formidable fighter, well suited to exploit these weaknesses. By seizing this chance to confront Vhagar and Aemond, Rhaenys aimed to deliver a decisive blow to the Greens. Removing Vhagar and Aemond from their arsenal would mark a significant victory for the Blacks. Rhaenys’ decision was a calculated risk, a gamble to shift the balance of power in favor of the Blacks. Moreover, a personal motivation likely fueled her resolve to avenge her grandson, adding a layer of determination to her bold choice.

Vhagar's not the problem, Aemond is. To defeat Vhagar, Aemond needs to be killed. RIP to Meleys and Rhaenys.

Rhaenys didn’t turn back because she is there to fulfill her role to defend her Queen’s allies. She stepped up in behalf of Jace and a Targaryen is a Targaryen: Face it, head on, fire with fire.

People didnt realize, Meleys won that Dance, as Vhagar fell to Earth and touched it. When it occurs with birds the Loser is the one to touch the ground or break off first

Alright let's analyse this in detail. To all those who keep saying "why doesn't Rhaenys just fly away?", please think of her options considering the fact that Vhagar is completely unscathed and hasn't just flown from Dragonstone to Rook's rest and so is also completely fresh when she joins the fight: 1: fly to dragonstone. Congrats, now you're leading Aemond and Vhagar towards your queen, granddaughter, husband and Rhaenyra's heir, all nicely congregated inside the dragonstone keep. Aemond and Cole planned this ambush knowing the black's thinking would be "Aemond/Vhagar won't leave King's landing", which would lure out a dragon for them to kill. It's a one-shot opportunity that they're not about to waste, so Aemond 100% is following Meylys to take her out. If Rhaenys turns back, she forces the fight with Vhagar to happen over dragonstone, because if she doesn't hold there Aemond is just going to incinerate the castle and everyone in it as well as the presumably present and riderless Vermax, Syrax and Moondancer. And if she fights him there it'll almost certainly be the same outcome as at Rook's rest with the other three riders only having a few minutes warning. That's not enough time to reach their dragons and get them into the sky. Even if they do, unless the four of them can coordinate perfectly, one decently aimed dracarys from Vhagar and Jace/Vermax and Baela/Moondancer are literally toast. If the stars align perfectly Rhaenys would probaly be fighting alongside Rhaenyra and Syrax for their lives, which is still incredibly dangerous for both of them. More likely Rhaenyra would lift off just as Rhaenys is being killed, at which point a slightly wounded Vhagar probably kills her and Syrax too, ending the war right there. Now maaaaybe you can make the argument that since Meylys is being described as the fastest dragon in the book that she'd have a slight head start between reaching dragonstone and Aemond catching up, and so could raise the alarm in time. But with how short the flight is to dragonstone, and the speeds displayed here on screen I'm skeptical whether that's show cannon, and if it is, how much leadtime it would be. In any case, flying to dragonstone risks her granddaughter and her betrothed (we all know Baela would not have hesitated a moment to help her, and Jace is equally eager to prove himself) and I really don't blame Rhaenys for not willing to risk watching those two die in front of her. The only way this doesn't hold up is if you really believe that under no circumstances would Aemond pursue, and I just don't buy that. He's not afraid of anyone besides Daemon who he knows is at Harrenhal, is not afraid of kinslying, is supremely self-confident, and wants the glory of winning a major battle if not the war. I'm sorry, he isn't letting Rhaenys get away once she shows up. No way in hell. 2: fly west towards Harrenhal. Caraxes/Daemon and Meylys/Rhanys is probably the one combo that Aemond wouldn't be confident facing on his own, so he'd probaly not pursue. However you might as well put up a big sign with an arrow pointing east saying "go ahead, have fun", since that's just giving Aemond clearance to fly to dragonstone and kill everyone there at his leizure, probably piecemeal, before Daemon can even be reched to call upon for help. And if you think that Syrx, Vermax and Moondancer can take Vhagar on their own (take some bites/score some hits sure, but actually kill her? yeah no), then I have a bridge in brooklyn to sell you. That's no real option either. 3: do as she did. Stand and fight were you are to defend the castle you came to defend, and do at least enough damage to Vhagar so that Aemond won't risk flying across the bay afterwards, and maybe, if you get lucky, try and take the greens trump card out in one fell swoop. If Vhagar goes down, so do the greens, it's that simple. It doesn't quite work, but she does do sizeable damage and forces him to the ground, before Aemond makes use of the smoke and the castle to burst out from below (ironically, the same tactic Rhaenys used against Aegon earlier on), taking her out. Still, that earlier skydance and fall didn't look pleasant for Vhagar, and since I suspect Aemond will be needed in King's landing now that Aegon is, uh... let's be friendly and say "no longer in a fit state to rule" to take care of that political mess, Rhaenys was ultimately succesful, even if it did cost her her life.

How can a boeing sneak up on fighter jet goes beyond me.

As someone mentioned in one review I watched recently, Rhaenys did what Rhaenyra did by going to talk to Alicent, she risked her life to try and put an end to the war, had she been able to kill Vhagar that would've been it, that's why she didn't escape..

Rhaenys was going back to Dragonstone. On that last turnaround, she didn’t say “Attack” and she was headed back over the ocean before Vhagar attacked. Aemond cut off her direction of escape.

to all the people saying she should have gone with daemon and kill aemond here is the thing vhagar was in kingslanding a dragon battle between meleys carraxes and vhagar would result in the complete destruction of the capital which is not what either sides want and some of you might say we dont care about the small folks well then dont care when meleys burst opened the dragon dome and killed hundreds of people and also she could have killed the greens but as much as the blacks hate the greens they are still her extended family and kinslaying is a mark no one wants to cross well maybe daemon she would rather face them in battle then kill them all off true badass and even though she died she did it in a badass way true legend and also she is the queen who never was she bows to no one let alone follow daemon and even with carraxes and meleys the outcome is still bleak as vhagar is the LARGEST dragon she would rather follow the queens orders rhenyras orders and part of me wants to belive that she knew this battle was gonna turn out brutal and thus volunteered to go then let syrax or vermax go which they would not stand a chance against not even sunfyre let alone vhagar she bows to no one and you expect her to flee at the sight of aemond hell no she would rather die and i know some yall thinking that dumb that stupid well she is a more skillful rider than both aegon and aemond yes i know most of you say weElL iF sHe WaS suCh a SkillFUl rider why did she die firsly she fought off two dragons at once second one of them was the largest dragon in the known world meleys is the fastest dragon but vhagar purely used her size against her that is not aemond being a good rider yes i know he did a little sneak up on her but meleys did that to sunfyre meleys and rheanys has a stronger bound as we see aemond can barely control his 184 year old nuke rheanys has experience and matureness and had it been vhagar alone she might have stood a chance but not sunfyre and vhagar and also could we just agree her confidence as she knows she can beat sunfyre him and aegon are not the problem meleys and them can swipe them out with a breeze hhe

This could have been a lot easier if one of Rhaneryra’s kids had cojones like aemond and bonded with Vermithor the bronze fury the 2nd biggest dragon. Caraxes, Meleys, and Vermithor together cooks the greens easy. Don’t need the other dragons nor the wild ones either. Vhaegar is the only threat but its just 1 dragon just jump her boom done. Helena has dreamfyre but she doesn’t really ride, Daron has tessarion who’s too small, and aegon’s sunfyre is tough but too small again. Now I get that sometimes riders die trying to tame dragons but it always rubbed me the wrong way that not one of the kids on the blacks side tried to get a legendary dragon. I know they put eggs under their cradles that hatched but at least let 1 have a choice.

Aemond seems to be the most interesting character in this show

vhagar hasn’t seen battles in decades that’s why meleys was getting some shots on her but caraxes is different he been to battles recently so it will be way different with caraxes & vhagar that moment will go down & history as the best scene ever on tv whenever the gods eye happens

I felt that Rhaenys was not fighting to kill but simply take Sunfyre out of the battle. It was obvious how Meleys was fighting was not to deal a fatal blow. Vhaegar however went straight for the neck...a kill move!

-The Chase of Shipbreaker Bay started the Civil War. -The Battle of Rook's Rest was the turning point. Aemond/Vhagar is the biggest threat in the skies and there is only one dragonrider that has a chance against the One-Eyed/Queen of the Dragons and that is Daemon/Carcaxes.

She had one of (if not THE) fastest dragons. I don't know why she didn't just dip as soon as she seen Vhagar. She already inflicted hella damage on the army.

Tactically Rhaenys and Meleys whould have lured Aemond and Vhagar to open ground given their speed and maneuverability advantage. Once on open ground Rhaenys could have engaged with Aemond or turned on Rooks rest knowing she has some time before Aemondd catches up.
