It was literally just a ring floating in space, but made by protomolecule and everyone knew it. "Getting close" wasn't even an option for anyone because they knew how dangerous the blue shit is. It never "activated" until he tried going through, and that was because he was going so fast.

They had sent probes already but they were moving very slowly with low power sensors and didn’t activate it

In the same episode, S03E07, right after the intro with Maneo, they literally show a probe or some other vessel crossing the ring, as the fleet approaches. But nothing happens. Who knows how Maneo triggered it... perhaps it was his speed, perhaps the proximity of the protomolecule on the Roci...

From what I remember, his ship wasn't destroyed, just him, even though a rapid deceleration would have destroyed both. All the probes were likely unmanned, given what everyone said

@@amarokorama Pretty sure it was his mass and velocity that "triggered" it. Its explained a bit better in the books, where they send probes at it, they disappear with no radio feedback and so they dont send ships in. The blue "force field" effect in the show isnt in the books. Basically Maneo is the test mouse, and they realize theres a speed limit "inside" the gate. In the books when he flies through there is no blue force field, but they can see his ship stop instantly and slowly float through, thats how they know its safe to go through but only slowly. Even then nobody goes through until the Roci is forced to go in and they chase her.
