Dick Hyman is a legend of the jazz! He is 94 years old nowadays and he even knew J P Jhonson and Willie the Lion and other great pianist. He also published a DVD called "century of jazz piano" where he shows all different piano styles and artists from ragtime to modern jazz. 😁

I'm a simple pianist, I see "Horowitz in Moscow" in the background, I like

The rhythm at 7:03 moves into a triplet rhythm with a "hemiola" accent - on all the alternating notes - ONE - two - THREE - four - FIVE - six. It has the feel of increasing the tempo by 50%. So if his stride tempo was about 80bpm, it feels like 120bpm with a triple-time feel. But after only a few beats of this he DOUBLES the pulse, making it a sextuplet relative to the tempo of the piece. It's a nice rhythmic change-up that also increases the drama.

The rhythm at 11:45. For two bars, he does a similar acceleration of the pulse, by playing a series of accenting (ascending) *dotted eights pulses* in the left hand, with the right hand alternating with unaccented chords. Depending on how you feel it, it can feel like a samba rhythm, or simply increasing the tempo by 4/3. This lasts for two whole bars and then reverts to the original pulse.

I actually met Rossano at Barry Harris' workshop and saw him play this tune (For all I know, it might have been the same occasion from when this particular video was filmed, which means I'm somewhere there in the back watching). Indeed, his technique is incredibly clean, and with an incredible light touch that allows him to fly past the keys like a comet. It's funny cause I had no idea he was this big, and I had spoken with him before during the workshop, thinking he was just another casual observer, until I finally watched him play.

Love all of these monster jazz pianists. The most enjoyable part of this video is your actual reaction of pure joy and appreciation. Also, it's great seeing Barry Harris' reaction to Rossano's playing; Pure joy as well.

The rhythm at 6:48 was basically him playing chords in triplets in which seemed like alternating between both hands (So like Right-Left-Right, Left-Right-Left.... etc) and ultimately switching to 16th note rhythm for a brief moment, before going back to triplet feeling.

This was fun. And *love* your instruction & demonstration videos, too. But you know what would be really nice? ... If you would post more of you just playing. Because your playing is really beautiful.

The music industry is a very fascinating journey. The mega rich of this industry always impress everybody. I think it has to do with mastering processes of abduction, or at least becoming comfortable with their relationship round you. The sooner you acknowledge their developments the better. These techniques, once confined to the empowerment of only a few overwhelming companies and their obsessed staff, really do it for everybody. It makes society as a whole so much more special and confident with itself. You can really bounce around inside these constructs without ever fading or phasing out ever. I truly love what the mega rich music industry did for everybody.

That was great reaction video! It can be intimidating watching these musicians do what they love, it I feel that way when I listen to you play but you also inspire the better musician in me to wake up and go do it too. So thank you 👍🏾 🙏🏾

You asked what's the rhythm in the hemiola figure at about 12:05 I think it's based on double-time triplets with accents on the 1st and 3rd of each grouping? Tying the first 2 of each and accenting on 1st and 3rd.

Around 12:09 you asked about phrasing. I'd consider that implied metric modulation, think of dividing sixteenth notes or eighths, whichever the case might be, into groups of three and emphasizing the first and third notes. You can really take that idea and run with it, making it feel like the tempo changed. I learned about this from a Vinnie Colaiuta article. The inverse might be dividing triplets into groups of 4 notes and making it feel like you're going from swing to straight time. Btw you are amazing. I will say that as a "pianist" I think I'm an ok drummer.

12:07 = 3:4 polyrhythm , he plays with that polyrhythm a few times. The pulse of "3" in the left hand. Big fan of your playing and dedication to mastery btw! killing!

you have to quit playing piano!?!?! Ha, thats funny! in thats the case, then I should never even look at a piano again! Obviously there are many, many hugely talented people in this world in so many ways, then again, the majority of the world could not even play a c major scale.. It's all relative! we have to look at these people as inspiration to be the best that we can be.. I grew up listening and to and "emulating" Chick Corea.. I know that I'll never be as good as him but he inspired me to get closer to the best that I can be on the keyboard.. This was a great video.. You are immensely talented, beautiful and humble.. I've always loved complexity in music. Somehow, however, I seem to prefer (even after countless hours of music theory classes) forms of musical complexity found outside the wide realm of jazz improvisation. I feel guilty admitting it, but hey ... If jazz improv was going to grow on me, it has had three decades to do so. Nonetheless, I see the skill in these clips and admire those superhuman abilities even if the sound world is not one I personally enjoy swimming in.

You may need to teach me how to quit also... Cos it just got a little more difficult 😂
