Reading and Northern 425 steam train hits car leaving lot in Jim Thorpe

Today, Reading and Northern steam locomotive #425 was pulling back into Jim Thorpe on the 11:00 train when a car darted in front. The driver and passenger both seem to be okay, just a little shaken. The passengers on board the train reported that they didn't even feel the train hit the car, which is a testament to the sheer power behind this 1920's steam locomotive. The locomotive was going a relatively slow speed, and sent the car flying as if it was nothing, so if you think you can beat a train through a crossing, don't even try. For those concerned about 425, she suffered a few bent grab irons and had a big tire print on her rear, but she'll be fine. Let this serve as a lesson to everyone: Look. Listen. Live.

@@trainman05matthewb.65 i did do research an in fact the driver did NOT see or hear the train, here is a copy and paste from the news article................................ JIM THORPE, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - A car drives directly into the path of a train in motion. A crowd of tourists witnessed the crash - some even had their phones out for the quick collision. “I thought it was kind of nuts! I mean the car was up to the train and you could see that the train was there,” said Lisa Sciler, a visitor. It happened in Jim Thorpe on Labor Day. An elderly couple visiting from Greensburg, Pennsylvania was leaving the train station parking lot. To get out to route 209 you have to drive over these train tracks. “Through investigations officers learned that the driver of the vehicle claimed he didn’t hear or see the train and of course collided with it,” said police chief Joe Schatz. The train hit the passenger’s side of the car. The driver, Roy Fatur, sustained minor injuries and his wife - in the passenger seat - reported no injuries. In Jim Thorpe, pedestrians and drivers need to use extra caution when approaching the railroad tracks. At this intersection there are no gates and no crossing arms that signal when a train is coming. “I always look twice, and sometimes three times because you never know,” said Sciler. “Look and listen because that’s clearly an example of how if you’re not looking or listening you can run into a problem,” said Schatz. Chief Schatz says he will discuss this incident with the mayor and council members at a workshop on Thursday. Together, they will determine what can be done to make this spot safer. And because the lot is owned by the county, they will also reach out to county leaders. “I think everyone got lucky! Everyone is safe and can tell the story the next day so that’s a blessing,” said Sciler.

Mototcyclists assume that they're invisible to car drivers, even with the extra assist of headlamps and safety vests. That assumption is not always correct, but often enough to matter. (Cyclists can do this as well, but because their acceleration and braking ability is more limited, they have fewer options for collision avoidance.) The two most common causes of motorcycle fatalities in the US are oncoming drivers turning left across the path of an oncoming bike, and drivers turning right to enter a principal street already occupied by a bike. The bike is directly in the field of vision of the driver in both cases. The reason for this "invisibility" is substantially psychological. Many drivers come to unconsciously think of vehicles as being either cars or trucks only. In that first fraction of a second before a collision may become unavoidable, they don't really register the motorcycle as a vehicle and take reflexive action.

If someone could just develop a loud audible warning device on a steam locomotive.
@ethanpoole3443
@ethanpoole3443 3 года назад
...or at least make trains LARGE enough to be seen! It is sad when one can not see or hear something that big and that loud bearing down on them but then has the “presence of mind” to stop dead on the tracks directly in front of the train and wait for it to hit them. I wonder if the elderly couple were mad at the train engineer for having the audacity to hit them, surely he could have swerved around them! This reminds me of an accident I witnessed decades ago between an elderly couple that made a left turn directly into the path of an oncoming full size van and I had stopped as a witness and had to separate them from the innocent middle aged driver that hit them as the elderly couple were downright angry at the driver “who hit them” and trying to pick a fight despite the fact that they were the ones that made a sudden left turn directly into his path.

My husband and I were just up the trail when we heard the horn blowing (and I'm hard of hearing) and heard something that wasn't quite right (apparently, the thud into the car). We saw the car afterwards, but I wasn't sure who the drivers were. Because of these people, they now have extra personnel at the crossing to ensure no cars or people get in front of the train. There are still stupid people who stop on the tracks (cars and walkers), but now there are people to encourage them along before the train heads out..

@Abdul Zuher no when 425 & 2102 did mainline stuff in the 1980s Conrail required that both tenders have that big plate of steel which acts as a cow catcher on their tenders be added to push cars out of the way. This way cars didn't get caught into the tender trucks causing a derailment when tender first running.
