You have no idea how happy it makes me that you actually read pestilence 🤣 you picked up on exactly why I like that series. I love the whole “learning how to be human” trope. It’s very silly but fun.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is, hopefully, going to hold my record of longest time on my tbr. Heard about it back in the early 80s, due to watching a tv adaptation, and got around to reading it in 2015.
THANK YOU! We need more people in the "Lila Bard is an absolute QUEEN" camp! Like, let's be honest, the Londons should be bloody grateful she's not a villain, cuz then they wouldn't stand a CHANCE. You read about her and you just *know* she'll accomplish anything she puts her mind to. And she's not doing it out of the goodness of her heart or even for money, she's doing it for FUN. Incredible character.🖤
okay but I didn't expect a TASKMASTER reference in a Kayla video! the UK series is my absolute favourite show, and the NZ series is also excellent. so happy you have found the AU version 💙 thank you for the excellent video, as always!
Kayla is like George Michael from Arrested Development in that she might try to convince us that being punctual and having a good sense of rhythm are the same thing. 😄
HITCHHIKERS SUPREMACY!!!! Yessssss. So happy!!!!! Marvin is the best. The second book - the restaurant at the end of the universe is my fav!! Aaaah sorry about the exclamations but I'm so happiieeeeee
Hitchhikers Guide is one of my favourite books too and I have hated most other sci-fi that I have read. Douglas Adams is truly a genius and his writing style is like crack to me and I am a very proud junkie.
this video was actually so fun. turning lemons into lemonade kinda thing. i'd love to see more videos in a similar vein. also, WOO! go liam! winning with a new team is honestly an incredible feat and something they'll always remember!
ugh it kinda guts me that you didn't love before sunrise since it's one of my favorite movies of all time but the amount of 5 stars in this???? so happy for you, truly
Before sunrise is my favourite film and my fiancé planned our entire engagement around my love of the film he flew us to Vienna and we went to all of the places it was so magical
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was actually supposed to be a Doctor Who story - Douglas Adams was a writer for the show at the time. Fans of the series can recognize the adaptations Douglas made to publish this classic. I have a beautiful edition with all the books published and I recommend watching some episodes of Doctor Who if you enjoyed the guide so much.
I just read “Everyone in my family has killed someone” on the beach in Mexico, and on the plane home. I absolutely loved it. The Australian sense of humour was totally my thing (even though I am Canadian). I was excited to see that there is a follow-up coming. I am also excited about the upcoming adaptation.
A Darker Shade of Magic is definitely just setting up the next two books because my God. The next two are riveting and very exciting. And reading how she fleshes out these characters so beautifully is chef's kiss
As someone who absolutely loves In My Dream I Hold A Knife and The House Across The Lake I definitely need to know all of your wacky 5 star thrillers! 😂
I’m thinking that Thrillers are definitely something Kayla and I align on because I’ve loved The Writing Retreat and The House Across The Lake. Can’t wait to read IMDIHAK
@@tungstensmum1491 I'm pretty picky when it comes to thrillers but I really loved IMDIHAK. Sooo much fun and kept me invested the whole time. Hope you enjoy!
@@yinandyangmix I was completely shocked when she mentioned IMDIHAK being divisive because I’ve only heard amazing things. Really can’t wait to get to it but it’s not available on my Libby so I might have to actually GO to my library….
I read the hitchhiker trilogy of four as an omnibus like 20 years ago and I don't remember which book it was in but if you ever read the rest and get to a part about a whale and a plant... That's my favorite.
This entire video was so funny, and I could not recover from "cruisin' for a bruisin.'" I'm so glad you loved The Writing Retreat! Can't wait for the live show to get into all the spoilers.
So glad you loved Hitchhiker's Guide! The whole series is super fun! I had so much fun with The Writing Retreat (and House Across the Lake for that matter 😂). Since you enjoyed it I would highly recommend The Plot and Who Is Maud Dixon?, which are both fun thrillers with writerly shenanigans.
I’m so glad you like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy! I was surprised how much I loved it, laughed out loud so many times. It’s fun seeing someone else enjoy it.
Yay! I'm glad that you loved Hitchiker's! It's one of my faves too, I have a 42 tattoo, and reference it as much as possible. There are five books total in the trilogy so there's so much more that you can enjoy!
I like seeing videos like this (and the one before) because it really shows how much thought goes into making these videos. And how many concepts don't even get used even if they were started. Plus it's nice that by making this video you also got to read some books
Thanks for the Liam updates, we love to see them! I am shocked you read Pestilence. It's all about expanding our reading taste. If you had fun, that is all that matters! I'm so excited you had all kinds of 5 star reads that's exciting! I'm looking forward to the Writing Reatreat discussion! I am also glad you finally read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is an excellent book. I didn't realize you hadn't read it, and would have said it is SO your kind of book!
The writing style of Pew from the little clip that we heard sounds like how James Baldwin wrote books. It's that sort of stream of consciousness writing style where lots of different points are joined by a bunch of "ands".
The shock I felt discovering that you're a Taskmaster Australia fan...unexpected but amazing. And now I'm not going to be able to read Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone without visualising Tom Cashman, so thanks for that 😅😅
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who forgot “pew” was an actual word and not just a sound effect…I also always thought “pew pew pew” when I saw that book 🤣
Highly recommend continuing the Shades of Magic Series. The world gets developed so much over the first trilogy and we even get to travel outside of the cities. The character development is really intriguing as well. Can't wait to see if you're continuing in the series!
I'm halfway through Everyone In My Family and I'm enjoying it so much. I'm laughing, enjoying myself, and just zipping through the book. Didn't know it was gonna be a series.
So happy I decided to finish the writing retreat before watching this - I only had a handful of pages left. Had a total blast with it and then got to relive the experience through you immediately after.
Kayla, sorry this isn't directly related to the video (I promise to watch it all) but... any plans to watch the Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret adaptation? I watched an early screening last week and it was just SO lovely, warm, hilarious, and good. I truly think you'd really like it!!!
i love matcha so it might taste differently for you, but a friend made a drink for me with brown sugar syrup and vanilla added. for a grande iced matcha, add two pumps of brown sugar syrup and one pump vanilla, then some cinnamon on top and i swear its like drinking a cookie
I'm so happy you finally read A Darker Shade of Magic and liked it! It's one of my all-time favs and I've been curious about what you'd think about it. I thought you might not like it, honestly so I'm pleasantly surprised. I also really enjoyed Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone and had a feeling you would like it when you read it as well. I've never seen Taskmaster AU, but the original UK Taskmaster is my favorite show every -- I rewatch it all the time. Taskmaster New Zealand is great as well 😊
The Hitchhiker's movie is also amusing. This is a late comment, but in spring 2024, Starbucks has a delish drink: lavender matcha oatmilk latte. So tasty.
I’m so glad that my favorite audiobook narrator is yours as well she’s so magical!! Congrats on this video being so successful! Love seeing you Reading things you love!
I'm so relieved you felt the same way about The Writing Retreat as I did!! It was such a wild ride!! I read it back in January because I had an ARC. I really need to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! So glad you liked ADSOM!!
I really love the Darker Shade of Magic trilogy, and I personally think the second and third books are big steps up from the first, so I'd definitely encourage you to keep going since you liked the first one well enough!
I picked up The Writing Retreat on Monday at the library and finished it last night, lol. Literally flew through it! I ended up giving it a 3 because I couldn't fully decide if I loved it or thought it whacky.
I had recommended Mort by Terry Pratchett on your 5 star categories video but wasn't 100% sure you'd like it. But now seeing you love Hitchhikers Guide, I think you could really like the writing style.
Fantastic vlog - loved the whole thing... but your Pestilence experience was over-the-top hilarious. Especially since you made your Mom read it first. 🤣 🥰 🤣
I'm so happy you loved Half a Soul ❤ I also adore them so much. I agree it has big Pride and Prejudice vibes and now have to get The Midnight a Bargain soon as well. I instant ordered all the other books in the series after I finished it and can't wait to read them and 🤞 they are as good as book one was.
Leave the pit in half the avocado and the other half i some is left in it, store in the same container as the half with the pit, you can even remove the pit and put it back in with the rest of the avocado and it stays good much longer!!!!
I'm so happy you liked The Writing Retreat! This is the first book I've been able to read for the book club before the live show and I enjoyed it so much.
I really enjoyed this video! Great content. I'm so happy you loved Half a Soul, Lexi had it as a book club choice for February and it was so enjoyable. I totally feel in love with the characters.
After hearing your description of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I think I'll like it based purely on the absurdity of it. (It's giving me The Orville vibes and I'm here for that.) Also I'm so glad this vlog worked out for you! And the review of pestilence... oh my god lmao. This whole vlog is worth it JUST for that.
May I say : if anyone enjoyed Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker"s Guide to the Galaxy, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Same category of humour - so goddamn funny, really - , and most of the books in it pretty much stand alone. Also, definitely put at the top of the list if you ever make a video "what to read when you feel down"
I cannot tell you how exciting it was to see you love Half a Soul. It was my favorite book of last year and I find that story so, so special! The novellas and following books are not as good, tbh, but absolutely worth the read when you just need to pick up something sweet and wonderful! Also, Half a Soul and The Witch's Heart were my top reads, sooo further evidence that TWH will be a good one for you 😁
Even you were describing ADSOM and "there was someone in peril" i heard "there was someone in payroll" like as a job and idk what it says about me that i got more interested when I thought a character in the book worked in payroll 😂
I was so confused when you mentioned Tom Cashman because I know him from the local radio and had no idea he hosts reality tv, so hearing someone from Canada mention him was a bit wild. Love how successful this vlog was, great seeing you having a good time!
This vlog was so much fun to watch! And wow Pestilence...I kind of want to read it now too, it sounds like an experience 😅 I've been saving this to watch after I finished the Writing Retreat and I am so happy to see that you gave it 5 ✨. I didn't love the end but I'm still tempted to rate it 5 because I loved the rest so much.
I love The Writing Retreat! I just went to a book festival and Julia Bartz was there and she said that originally the plot was completely different but she liked the characters so she rewrote the whole thing and kept the characters. Roza Vallo was originally an alien 😂
a dirty matcha would have been the perfect green drink! order a Grande matcha with 1 or 2 shots, add either brown cinnamon sugar, white chocolate mocha, or strawberry/raspberry, your milk of choice (oat is the obvious choice) and add a cold foam if you'd like. it's pricey but it's so delish!
