I have heard only great things about Emma ever since I've joined your channel.... I just finished reading Pride and prejudice a couple of weeks ago and liked it ... Will start reading Emma in the first week of December soon after I'm done with my current read(A Town called solace by Mary Lawson) which has been a lovely read so far... 😊

@@ciarascorner A Town Called Solace--the brilliant and emotionally radiant new novel from Mary Lawson, her first in nearly a decade--opens on a family in crisis: rebellious teenager Rose been missing for weeks with no word, and Rose's younger sister, the feisty and fierce Clara, keeps a daily vigil at the living-room window, hoping for her sibling's return. Enter thirtyish Liam Kane, newly divorced, newly unemployed, newly arrived in this small northern town, where he promptly moves into the house next door--watched suspiciously by astonished and dismayed Clara, whose elderly friend, Mrs. Orchard, owns that home. Around the time of Rose's disappearance, Mrs. Orchard was sent for a short stay in hospital, and Clara promised to keep an eye on the house and its remaining occupant, Mrs. Orchard's cat, Moses. As the novel unfolds, so does the mystery of what has transpired between Mrs Orchard and the newly arrived stranger. It was long listed for this year's booker awards...As I mentioned haven't finished it yet but I would yet recommend it.

I loved Emma as a character, but wasn't a huge fan of the book as a whole. It was my first Austen and took me months to get through, but now having read all of Austen's books I can appreciate it a lot for what it was. :) Mr. Knightley was a great character, so knowledgeable and interesting! As you said, he's the only one who challenges Emma so he was my favourite in this book. Totally agree that Emma was a much better conclusion than S&S, P&P and Mansfield Park. Glad you enjoyed your re-read. ❤️❤️

Interesting! That was my experience with pride and prejudice the first time I read it, then when I reread after having read some of her other books, I appreciated it a lot more!

Hi, your videos are awesome! keep them coming! Just wanted to tell you, that if you like Emma so much you should watch Clueless from 1995 with Alicia Silverstone, if you haven't seen it and for Emma , Emma from 2009 with Romola Galai. Of course if you haven't seen it as well.

I think that is one of the few Jane Austen novels I have not read. I love Pride and Prejudice and its spin-off novel "Wickham's Second Attempt". I really hope that one day the latter is made into a motion picture. There is a concept trailer up for it! #wickhammovie

Since Emma is your favorite of Austen’s novels I was wondering what your thoughts are on the film Clueless (1995) which is a modern Emma retelling / if you’ve seen it yet?

So you've mentioned that Emma is your favourite of Jane Austen's books but would you recommend it to someone who is knew to the author and to the genre? If not which Jane Austen book(s) would you recommend as an introduction to the author?
@ciarascorner
@ciarascorner 2 года назад
I absolutely would because it’s funny, great characters and very easy to follow! Pride and Prejudice is also a great one to start with for the same reasons!
@bb_reads
@bb_reads 2 года назад
I know you didn't ask for my opinion, but personally I think sense and sensibility is the best place to start with Austen, as it gives us a good idea of everything you will find in a typical Austen book. :) The writing style is also easier to follow here compared to Austen's other books. I'd started with Emma and found it a bit difficult to read, and while pride and prejudice is incredible, the writing is a bit harder there. I guess it comes down to subjective taste!
@ciarascorner
@ciarascorner 2 года назад
That’s a good point - as her first novel, sense and sensibility is much simpler in its writing style so could be a good place to start! Really the only two I would t recommend starting with would be Mansfield Park and Persuasion!

Dear Ciara, you have another edition of Emma! I was just seen it in your beginning of your video, and I was screaming, is just theeereee look behind youuuuuuuu!! X-) … It is the Chiltern Classic Edition! The pretty floral one! I love that edition, but I just got the Box Set from Word Cloud Classics so I don’t want to have too many duplicates and besides right now I am in love of the Flexibound editions, very comfortable books to read ;). Hugs from Mexico 🇲🇽 💕

I’m just shy of being half way through Emma and she seems very immature and naive in the beginning but I have hopes that will change. I wish I had picked this up when I was in high school or early college cause I think I would’ve really liked it at the point in my life but as an adult, I’m having a little bit of a hard time connecting. But it’s still early, I might change my mind. :) Harriet’s character is confusing to me. She was allowed to be easily talked out of marrying someone that she truly loved and was financially well off. But Emma wanted her to marry someone else simply because they lived closer (correct me if I’m wrong). Emma is just not a likable person at this point.
@SN-bk5xj
@SN-bk5xj Год назад
Harriet wanted to marry Robert Martin, he’s a farmer, I don’t think he is rich. Emma wanted Harriet to marry Mr Elton, the vicar. He had more money and knew the ”right” people according to Emma. She didn’t think they could continue to be friends if she married Robert Martin. Emma couldn’t see herself visiting a farm😂 And for Emma’s age, all of Jane Austen’s heroines are young, I think the oldest one is 27 years and that’s Anne Elliot. Elizabeth Bennet is only 20, so she’s even younger than Emma 👍🏻 Well only one year but still
@theokiereader
@theokiereader Год назад
@@SN-bk5xj that makes a little more sense. I personally didn’t care for Emma but I can see why other people liked it. I think maybe I went into her works with expectations too high. That I was going to love all her work. In the end, I only liked 2. 🥲 sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice.

Emma was my least favorite of Jane Austen’s for the moment and I was surprised because it is many people’s favorite. I found Emma a little selfish and manipulative, I hated Mrs Bates, her dialogue parts were so annoying to read and Mr Woodhouse was really boring and annoying 😅. Luckily I loved all her previous books and I will keep reading them in order of publishing.
@SN-bk5xj
@SN-bk5xj Год назад
Whaat? I love Mr Woodhouse!😂 He is so sweet and funny. And I think you mean Miss Bates, and I agree she could be a little bit too much, but I still loved the book!
