A short video about my encounter with Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, which I read in preparation for my next module with the Open University (A112 - Cultures). Through reading the book I went on to discover 'Victor', which I am taking part in for the first time this year.

Thanks for the good video telling of your adventure in the pages of Jane Eyre. When I was a troubled young girl, my beloved mother tried to get me to read it more than once. I guess a part of me wishes I had, as the very trajectory of my life would have been quite different. But, another part of me is very glad I shunned it then, because I wouldn't have gone through what I did, to make me who I am now, and most importantly, I would not have had my three precious children.Twenty some years later I finally picked it up, and like you, I could barely put the book down. I read it some years later again, and had the same experience. I went to college late, and majored in English. We read many very fine works of literature from all over the world, and from many different eras, but the Romantic period remains my favorite. If you have not already read it, I would highly recommend Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. Happy reading 😊!

Thanks for sharing your story. Whilst a little turbulent mine was not so bad but likewise I’m glad I’ve read the book now as I don’t think I would have appreciated it in early years. Wurthering Heights is on my to buy list and will most certainly be one I read in the near future 😊

I read Jane Eyre in High School, and while I enjoyed many classics back then, I did not enjoy Jane Eyre back then... when I re-read it at an adult it quickly became one of my favorites! I love a lot of Victorian literature. but I adore Jane Eyre.

It’s a great read and I’m glad that I waited until now to read it as I don’t think I would have appreciated before

I have been reading 'Jane Eyre' since I was a child. I also studied it with the OU (level 3, 19th novel course, now defunct). Studying it, enhanced my love of it, I strongly recommend finding post colonial writing on it on JSTOR. In terms of the Victorian ideas of race and slave trade routes (alcohol traded one way, slaves the other in the same boats) who would have been a slave owner, given the time period. I don't want to give anything about the plot so I'm not going to say anything else here! It's super interesting the research that people have done.

Thanks for the recommendation, will look into it. Can imagine it would be fascinating investigating the culture and social norms lived in the Victorian era to give these books more life and understanding
