In Before the Coffee gets Cold, the characters didn't have much depth of characterization because in a play it's sometimes left to the actors to provide -it can also give them more room for innovation, self expression, improvisation, etc - and this book is adapted from a play. That's why the setting is the same, and the bell ringing marks the entrances and exits.
Your reaction to The Travelling Cat Chronicles was exactly my reading experience - those last 40 pages I was completely sobbing! There is another Japanese book called The Guest Cat which I have heard good things about so am trying to gear myself up to that next! But also read The Housekeeper and the Professor - one of my favourite translated Japanese books.
I loved In Order to Live as an audiobook! Her story is so touching and powerful. It got me into more memoirs of immigrants, and I found myself becoming more thankful of what I have in life. Hugs from Colorado!! ❤️
I was here like wow I haven't been so emotionally destroyed by a book since idk when, but then I realised that I actively avoid sad stories because I get too depressed 😬 Ooops. Loved this vlog! 🐈⬛
omg i gifted my dad the travelling cat chronicles for christmas a few years ago.....i might need to borrow if off him to read lmao. plus i'm with you on every book should be written from the perspective of a cat 🐱
I've had before the coffee gets cold on my tbr for a while and am looking forward to it. I'm such a cat person and now I'm definitely adding the travelling cat chronicles to my tbr but I'm so nervous! 🐱
I get so excited when I see Before The Coffee Gets Cold getting mentioned, maybe it's because it was the first book I read after ages of not reading haha. I'm planning on reading the sequel, this time without reading the synopsis for a little bit of surprise, I'm excited, to say the least (and scared to learn what type of angst the author has in store), love your videos especially your reaction videos
Cat retellings! Genious! Yes, please. LOL. And I love the covers of Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Traveling Cat Chronicles. If I was going into a bookstore I would cover-buy them so fast. So, maybe less browsing in person is a very good thing. :)
Omg, this video was amazing, simply all three books are on my tbr and after watching your reactions, especially to “The Travelling Cat” was just spot-on, I just can’t wait to get to all three of them so much now 💕💕💕 🐱💕💕
I’ve put the traveling cat chronicles on my tbr (I need to buy it first though😀) because I couldn’t stop laughing at your reaction to it. 😂 I probably won’t be laughing when I read it but you were hilarious 😂 Thank you for making my day happier 😀
Just found your channel and have been binging your videos! I love your personality and how you edit!! 💜Definitely putting the traveling cat chronicles on my TBR!! 😻🐈⬛🐱
Everything should be from a cat’s perspective, they are superior! Now I really want to pick this book up ❤️ recently got into translated fiction and all of these books look so cool; OMG your editing is fab! 😻
If you love stories from a cat perspective, I adored For He Can Creep. It's a super short, humorous novella-- free online through Tor. The cover is illustrated by Red Nose Studios (same guy who did Cerulean Sea) and it's based on an old poem. We stan Jeoffry!
I'm glad you like The Travelling Cat Chronicles! I'd heard of it but a friend told me they spent like 1-2 pages describing sprinklers or a window or something? and then she ended up DNFing about half way through so my interest kind of went down.... My interest might have just gone up again! 😅 P.S. The red lipstick is stunning! 😻🐈⬛
"If Cats Disappeared from the World" by Genki Kawamura fits right into the theme of this video. It's japanese translated fiction including cats, magical realism and the potential to make you cry. 🐈
one of the best translated fiction i've read in years was Lie With Me by Philippe Besson. it's translated from french and it's a short novel. we see these two characters when they are young and when they are well into being adults. it's an emotion of a book, tbh. the way it describes feeling and just being in the moment and I don't know it's just a masterpiece. it's also what the french call autofiction -- autobiographical fiction, or fictional memoir. so it might be partially based on the author's real life but like we obv don't know to which extent. i would highly highly recommend this book to everyone. and sidenote, there are like two parts to the story, and i cried at the end of both parts. it's just such a heartwrenching story
I'm so excited to see what you think of The Travelling Cat Chronicles, I LOVE that book. There's something so magical, so beautiful about Japanese novels, I can't quite put my finger on it. EDIT. Yup. That's pretty much the reaction I had to TTCC.
I read before coffee gets cold audio book cause I could pronounce names or tell some apart If you like stuff told from cats or involving cars check out fun cozy mystery series from Molly Fitz first one is called kitty confidential There's a hilarious talking cat
I DNFed Before The Coffee Gets Cold and rated a Murakami 2 stars, so now I’m terrified of all the translated Japanese fiction on my TBR. It’s probably a me problem, and I’m SCARED.
I dnfed it too, it was writen just not good, if i read a book i do not want to be writen so poorly, keep trying, there are also good books out there like "Out" Natsuo Kirino
I almost DNF'd Before The Coffee but then gave it 3 stars, as the more I read the more it grew on me, and I've also DNF'd 2 Murakami books. Do you like mysteries? I would recommend Newcomer by Keigo Higashino. I gave it 5 stars. And I also recommend the short story collection Where the Wild Ladies Are (slightly quirky feminist ghost stories for summer).
