READING MY PERSONAL PROFILE | PART TWO | What To Write in Your Personal Profile
QUESTION: What's important to you and why?
Hello again!
This video is part of a short series all about my responses to the questions asked in UBC's personal profile. I am a first year student, and while all this stuff is still (kind of) fresh in my head, I thought I'd share what I wrote!
The second video (aka this one) is specific to the prompt "What's important to you and why?" I share parts of my response, some tips, and general advice when it comes to writing an amazing personal profile!
The last two videos, likely won't be up before the deadline for the personal profile... BUT... these two are enough to get you started!
I really hope you find these helpful, and as always, if you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email: itsmemaddya@gmail.com
Good luck with writing your personal profiles!
xoxo

Heyy Maddy! I’m looking into applying to UBC for the fall of 2021, I’ve seen other videos of people who were accepted and they said that talking another language is mandatory for acceptance, I know you’ve probably made a video about this but did you take a second language course?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hi Eniola! To my knowledge, talking another language is not mandatory, but taking a language course in high school is. I think you just need up to a language 11 but it might depend on the faculty/program you want to apply to. I can NOT speak a second language to save my life and I made it to UBC so I’m pretty sure there isn’t a rule about it being mandatory. I took up to grade 11 French and that was the extent of my language career haha! Hope that helps :)

I m confused here, so since u went to great depth about your musical achievements/involvements in this section of the personal profile, and I assume u mentioned that in your extracurriculars section too, doesn't that seem repetitive?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 2 года назад
I can see why it's confusing. You can mention something more than once - that's fine. But I would not recommend saying the same thing over and over. If you are talking about music and you keep saying "I really like to play piano because..." that gets repetitive. Talking about specific aspects of the experience that relate to the given question is not repetitive... does that make sense?

@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hi Harsh! They are. It's kind of intentional I think - they want to know if you can focus on your key characteristics and deliver them in your personal profile. Sometimes it helps to write down everything that you want to say as a statement on a sheet of paper and draw a bit of a map - try and organize your ideas based on similarity and see if any common themes arise! Hopefully that will help you out. These questions aren't meant to be easy... don't worry!

There is a section at the end of the profile where you can talk about “anything else you want UBC to know.” I would save talking about your academic plans for that part and using the other questions to indirectly support that. Hope that makes sense!

The personal profile is a series of questions UBC expects you to answer as a part of your application. I am assuming the personal statement is the same thing just called something different.

Do you think that both international and local students are reviewed the same? I am finishing my senior outside of Canada but have an average of 99, volunteer activities, recommendation letters, and an overall decent personal profile. Also, I'm taking sat subject on physics and math 2. Do you think that I can get into UBC?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
In terms of the personal profile, yes... I believe. In terms of grades I know that UBC sometimes needs to convert international grades so that they are comparable to Canadian grades, more specifically BC. I don't quite know how it all works but at the end of the day everyone is reviewed the same. You sound like a pretty amazing prospective student! I'd say you have a great chance, but of course, I can't guarantee anything :) Hope that helps?

Hi Adam! Last year, my average was a 94% when I applied. I would strongly recommend reaching the mid 90s as UBC Science is increasingly competitive. Don't worry though - a strong personal profile is equally important as your grades.

Hey! I’m applying this year and one of the tips on UBC’s website is to be specific in your personal profile. Is that just for the activities section? How specific do you have to be in terms of the open-ended questions like this one? Thx in advance :)
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hello Zoe! It applies to your whole profile! Be specific in the examples you use for each of your responses. For questions like this, its about finding something that resonates with you and then finding examples that support that. Not sure if that helps? I know it is really hard :/ Good luck!

It is best to answer the question appropriately! If it asks for one, then focusing on one is best! You could still talk about other things so long as they relate to your central idea. Hopefully that helps a bit!

Hi Maddy! I understand that grades aren’t the only factor that plays a role in admission but if I apply to ubc sci with a 95% average, would you say that there is a good chance of getting accepted? And do you think adding that I have volunteered at a hospital helping staff with research a good thing to add or is it something too related to the sciences that they would just think that I’m doing it just because even though it is something that I am very passionate about? And lastly, I have always wondered that if you take an AP course and your final mark is let’s say an 88% but someone who takes the same class but in non AP, gets 95%, will they look at the student with a 95% or 88%? Do they acknowledge a students course difficulty or will they just look at a students overall average and consider the student with the 95%? thank you !!
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hey Cassidy! I applied with a 94%. The competitive average is around the mid 90s, so you should be okay! I can't guarantee anything, but you're in pretty good standing academically speaking. Talking about those experiences is really important if they've shaped what you are passionate about and what has motivated you in some way. This will sound cheesy (maybe?) but they will be able to "read" your passion if those activities were actually important to you. I am not totally sure how that works out. I don't think they really pay attention to "AP" unless you pass the exam and get credit for that subject. I think they do acknowledge it to some extent but I'm not sure. There is a part of your personal profile where you can talk about the courses you've taken, how they were challenging, how thats prepared you for university, etc - maybe consider mentioning it there? Hope that helps!

Can you please be completely honest.. do you think a 90% average and an average personal profile will be allow me to make it into applied sciences at UBC?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hello Elizabeth! I'm not too familiar with the competitive averages of UBC Applied Science. As it is a very competitive program, you are going to want the absolute highest possible average you can get. My friends who were admitted into App Sci had about 97% averages and really good personal profiles. Your personal profile needs to be the absolute best it can be... not just "average." I don't want to discourage you - you should still apply regardless! But you would have to work very hard to make that happen. I hope that helps. I know it's maybe not what you want to hear... Maddy A
@amritabanerjee1300
@amritabanerjee1300 4 года назад
So this is a little late and you may or may not have already gotten an admission decision by this time but I just wanted to let you know that you don't necessarily "need" to have a high 90's average to get into App Sci (although it would definitely help as Maddy said), your personal profile however needs to have quite a bit of thought put into it and most definitely be above simply "average". Many of my friends with averages in the low 90's got into App Sci this year in the very first wave of first round admissions (the wave in which students with the highest grades get admitted first). Although they didn't have high 90s averages, they had amazing personal profiles and so don't be too discouraged if your grades aren't insanely high but do make sure to make your personal profile the best you possibly can!
