Take a ride on Reading & Northern T-1 2102 as it powers a fall colors excursion. The camera covers the trip from Port Clinton to Hauto. The 2102 fights slick rails during this trip and almost stalls in Barnesville but thanks to an experienced locomotive crew, she makes it over the grade!

the moment you hear a Reading 6-chime get drowned out by the stack talk of the locomotive its self, you know it's working hard

Okay round about 59:00, the engin1e crew engages the booster. This is why they really slowed down. The T-1 has a Franklin Booster, however it can only be engaged at a really low speed, which is why they slowed down, to let it engage, then went at it again. R&N is about the only steam operator that consistently uses the booster engine on steam.

I wouldn't say that is the reason they slowed down. They entered a very shady area and started slipping really bad. While I don't doubt that the booster can only be engaged at low speeds, it looks like the Engineer was fighting to keep it moving the whole time. They most likely just engaged the booster once they lost enough speed that it could be engaged.

@@wwrr98 agreed, you would never intentionally slow down to engage the booster unless it was to test the appliance. Additionally, this trip was the only passenger run that the crew needed to cut the booster in for (the leafy rail and 18 cars really did them in on this run), though had the firing table not melted on them the previous trip before they got to Port Clinton, I suspect they would have needed the booster on that trip as well, since they were running 20 cars that day. It’s just a shame that the booster exhaust isn’t routed up front to the stack like it is on the 2716; makes it a little harder to tell when it is being used unless you know what to look and listen for.

Wow at 1:01 you can see the axle rod waddle as the engines really starts to pound.

What impresses me is how clean a stack the fireman's running! Yeah, the exhaust runs black for a few seconds after each slip, but it clears up quick. That's how you know he's got her dialed in just right.

Beautiful. Like sitting in (or in this case, ON) a dome looking at the fall scenery. My son and I were riding 3 cars back on this trip. Enjoyed every minute.

Nice to see someone finally using an external mic for this, at least it surely sounds better than a stock gopro. Well done! Crew really had their hands full north of Orchard up to Carbon. That shady rail is a real challenge that requires the skill of a seasoned team.

I rode behind her and 425 on the Aug 13 rambles, I’d love to have had a video like this of the 02 working hard that day. In JT she had to just be dragging the 425 and the whole consist through the station as she was just blasting the whole time.

Great video. Just wondering about something. It seemed they went through quite a few crossings without signaling? Any particular reason for this or did they camera just not pick up the sounds.
@firefighter25dfd
@firefighter25dfd Год назад
With the position of the camera/mic and exhaust being so loud, it drowns out the whistle. They blew for every crossing.
@reidrowe5627

@Zac McGinnis ok, makes sense, although I was able to hear it at some of the crossings.

If one visits the Reading and Northern, can they view the engine being serviced? If so, where and what time?
