Freida Mcfadden went pretty viral on TikTok with people who don’t normally read mystery thrillers. It’s probably the only book they had read in the category so it got a lot of votes unfortunately.

I honestly think Freida McFadden won because she’s been trending on TikTok and her books have been super accessible being on Kindle Unlimited… Kindle Unlimited books were out in force this year.

You can feel ok about recommending a 'British' book to the US audience...most of us prefer UK 'stuff' over US. And the Richard Osman book did have me crying, especially since my daughters have instructions if I become like Stephen...

Last Devil to Die should have won! it was my only 5-star for a mystery this year. I did not have any spoilers or even know (beyond the hints in the book) what was going to happen ... OMG. But wow, Richard Osman handled it sooooo well, so respectfully, so insightfully. He is a master!

I'm so glad you finally read a Kate Morton book! I agree that it's NOT thriller/mystery. It's definitely historical fiction lol. I consistently enjoy her books, but I can understand why she's not everyone's cup of tea.

hi meg!!! i can totally see what you’re saying about i have some questions for you, even though i loved it! i think i started to love it more after i listened to an interview with the author where she said that originally each chapter started with a question. i think that the point that she’s trying to make is that there is no answer, just more questions. i can see why you didn’t like that aspect of the book though! it’s definitely a love it or hate it book

I love Kate Morton, she's on of my favorite authors. She's more of historical fiction with mystery. She definitely shouldn't be in this category. Great video! Haven't read the Housemaid's Secret, but I find it interesting that it won.

A good TBR Clue prompt would be "Read one of the bottom 10 Mystery/Thriller books from 2022-current." Then you can see if Mara ranked any of the lower voted books in her personal top 10 (ie. What Lies in the Woods & The River We Remember) and read one of those.

GRCA was actually the worst across the board this year. So many books that were in the wrong categories (e.g. three Greek tellings in Fantasy?! Litfic galore on SSF?!), removing Graphics and Children's, Winners being the most basic and least expected choices (except maybe Fourth Wing). GRCA is absolute trash this year.

Greek retellings *are* fantasy. The mythological world are quintessentially fantastical.

@@neliaaa It feels weird putting Greek myths in fantasy. They feel more like litfic or historical fiction. I've seen many other fantasy booktubers feel the same way towards the Greek myths nominees, they feel weird about them being in Fantasy or at least feel like only one should be allowed (and give two spaces to other cultures' retellings) - which I also totally agree with.

I don’t think I am a Freida McFadden girly either. Her writing feels extremely mediocre to me! I read the Housemaid and am good if I don’t pick up another.
