Craig,MCA or minimum circuit amps is how you pick the wire size. For this condenser 19.2 mca you can use #12 wire normally rated at 20 amps. This is because it is a motor circuit. Any motor circuit can be "over fused or over breakered" because the motors have thermal overload protection (a motor starter, vfd or thermal protection built into the motor) provides this protection.With a single motor the wire is sized at motor amps (you have to use amp rating from code book) x 1.25= wire size.example: a motor rated 20 amps the wire size would be 20 x 1.25=25amp wireWith a packaged piece of equipment with multiple motors (like the condenser above) you use the MFG information take the compressor amps 14.4 x 1.25=18 amps + the condenser motor amps (1.2 amps).= 19.2 MCA as shown on the nameplateWith multi motor equipment you take the larges motor x 1.25 and then add the other loads.If you had a large commercial roof top with 4 compressors all the same size, 1 indoor blower and 6 condenser fans you would take compressor amps from 1 compressor (assuming that is the largest motor load) x 1.25 + condenser fans, indoor blowers, crancakes heaters, controls, electric heat etc and total that all upIn the old days 1960s, the electrician had to do this and they never got it right. Now, the MFG does the calculation for you and puts it on the unit name plate.....as abovewith multimotor equip you only multiply the larges motor load x 1.25. If the larges motors are all the same size you just use one motorThe idea is the 1.25 gives you larger wire to take the starting inrush. Thermal protection will prevent wire overloading. The breaker or fuse provides short circuit or fault protection. So its common to see #12 on a 30 amp breaker, #10 on a 40 am breaker etc. This only applies to motor loads. Xcellant videos!!!!!
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
Max fuse is what is used to size the wire supplying the outdoor unit from the breaker box. That was what I was trying to say. If it shows 30amp max and a 30 amp building breaker is installed then 10 gauge wire would be run unless it was a long run. The unit never runs anywhere near the max amps and like you said is for short circuit and fault protection, thanks!

@TonyNanni 2 года назад
You are usually right about most things Craig, but you are way off here. I’m very surprised at the way you have dug in on this when other knowledgeable posters, probably electricians, have told you that you size wires off the eating plate minimum circuit ampacity, not the breaker. This is cut and dry stuff that anyone doing electrics would know. The breaker can be way over the normal wire ampacity with motor circuits. In this case with a rating plate ampacity of 19.2 you would use 12 awg wire. You could even use 14 awg then (not nm cable) with 75 degree rates terminal connections (which is what most breakers and terminations are rated At today). Sizing 10 awg is total overkill and unnecessary.
@Balticblue93
@Balticblue93 Год назад
@@TonyNanni Tony, as an HVAC student at a local HVAC school here in Denver, I have a question about this. Does 10 awg wire cost a lot more or what would the reason be not to use the 10 awg wire? What size breaker would you recommend with the 12 awg wire? The rated capacity is 19.2, so would it be 20 0r 25 amp with the 12ga? I have seen wire pricing and do not see any cost savings or advantage to going with smaller wire. So I look to expert advice to learn the correct path to take in this particular case.
@TonyNanni
@TonyNanni Год назад
You could use 10 awg if you like if the cost is not much more. In fact I might use 10 awg if the run was long to limit voltage drop. I was just pointing out that Craig is not correct on this issue and that the other posters are correct regarding how to size an air conditioner circuit. It is important to know this info because you will see 30 amp breakers on 12 gauge wire commonly in ac circuits and you need to not immediately think this is wrong Bottom line the manufacturer of the equipment has done the work for you sizing the breaker and the wire. You go off the data plate min circuit ampacity and breaker size

Ac service tech you have the best videos. One thing I know online has very little of is sheet metal work. Nothing serious just small jobs like pocket door design when we have to change an evaporator. I know lots of guys have issues with this especially if they went from maintenance straight to service. Also making a new pan for the evaporator to sit on. This would be a great lesson. For instance if we have to swap an evaporator but we need to make a new door because of a change in evaporator size and piping arrangements. Thanks

You could use r410a in an r22 coil as you said. Problem with r410a is that it takes longer than r22 for the coil to hit dew point. Thus, latent cooling time is less during a run cycle. To overcome this, manufacturers make r410a coils larger, "catching more moisture," to offset the longer time it takes the coil to hit dew point. Great video. Edit: I found this science to be facinating. I'd love to see a video about this going further into the science and design of r410a systems.

If it is charged to target superheat, there should be no problem. Superheat doesn't occur until all refrigerant has been boiled off in an evaporator. The larger evap coils are due to increased efficiency demands.

Can someone please explain to me if there is a code on nameplate rating locations? What I mean is should I have to unscrew 10 screws and take out front panel covers to access the nameplate reading of a hot tub for example? Also shouldn't nameplate ratings be professionally screwed in made out of metal and located on the outside of the unit? I'm working on installing a Hot Springs hot tub and there is no name plate ratings outside of the unit, you have to unscrew six screws and take out the front access cover to read a paper nameplate that was extremely vague. It didn't have the words "amperage" "wattage" "draws" etc.

All google pulls up is the abbreviation for A/C and how to read the condenser label. Is it a A/C trade secret? No one I know has the heat strips mark as to which one were installed in the unit.

Oversizing a fan motor would be like having a slightly larger coil except there is a point where it is not worth it since it is usually a psc motor and will not be able to pull more air through due to the restriction. It is not like a ecm that will force more air through a restriction, thanks!

Good info, but system is out of warranty and you cover up the serial number. Supply houses won't give away parts under warranty anyways, and if it under warranty they usually require the old parts back. The serial number also is a good indicator to find out the age etc...
@YTsux24-7
@YTsux24-7 5 лет назад
The manufacturer only gives a 5 year parts warranty. The correct address and original owner's name is required also. If I sell a system, I tell the customer they can register the equipment to get a 10 year parts warranty. If they sell the home in 4 years the new owner has 1 year left on the parts warranty.

Both absolutely correct, I just don't want any units I am doing videos with to be referenced during a service call or something, that is it. I got in a habit with that and just kept doing it including this older one, thanks!

Lee, why do you always have to be a D Bag. Craig put out a good video for newer techs,. I don't know why you watch everyone's videos because you make it clear nobody is as good as you.

Hi sir! I got a r22 system,ill be replacing condenser that has r410a from factory, can i recover 410a refrigerant & add r407c instead?

Check what kind of oil is in the compressor and if is compatible with 407 c.Mineral oil or POE.

R407c runs at pressures near r-22 and is a retrofit for r-22 if there is poe oil in the system. R410a cannot be replaced with r407c, thanks!

@@acservicetechchannel yes it does have poe oil on compressor, the system was originally r22,im just replacing condenser thats equipped with 410a refrigerant, i believe it has 1lbs of it

I would guess 3 ton, just judging by the compressor and overall current rating, but that's not always correct guessing. lol

With all due respect & in the spirit of continuous learning, NEC Table 310.16 Ampacities table 240.G specific conductor application Air Conditioning & refrigeration equipment circuit conductors 440, part iii, VI based on the 75 degree C table you base wire size on minimum circuit ampacity NOT breaker size. With that said you do have to comply with cable type. This is the one area that is super confusing and and may electricians get it wrong and many technicians do as well. Please correct me if I’m incorrect. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WugJ8-70Sqs.html

So the conductors from the breaker panel to the disconnect should be 12awg?
@Yawwee
@Yawwee 5 лет назад
I ALWAYS USE 10AWG TO BE COMPLETELY SURE THE WIRE IS ADEQUATE !!!!
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
Since the max breaker listed is 30, a 30 amp breaker should be installed in the building and 10 gauge wire run to the disconnect for the outdoor unit unless it is a very long run in which case you could use 8 gauge wire to avoid a voltage drop, thanks!
@russell4309
@russell4309 5 лет назад
I was watching a video by Mike Holt he teaches electrical code. I think he says that the size of the wire is based on the circuit ampacity which in this video at 18 or 19 amps. In which case you would need a 12awg. Have you heard of that method before?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
@@russell4309 It is not wrong to size the indoor breaker at 20amp and just run 12 gauge to the unit. That is certainly fine but most of the time the indoor breaker is sized by the max breaker size. The unit will be running quite a bit lower than the min amps anyway and would only trip based on a short. Both are certainly correct, thanks!

4:15: The nameplate lists an RLA of 14.4A. Yet the video states that this is actually the MCC and must be divided by 1.56 to get the actual RLA. WTF? Why not just print the damned RLA where it says "RLA" and *multiply* by 1.56 to get the MCC?

I always find it so stupid when a manufacturer uses numbers that can confuse us tech's... Just leave the multiples of 12 alone to only represent the btu's of the equipment. Don't start off with 24 intended to represent something else. I can only imagine how many newbs have made errors thinking many of these units are 2 ton. Why not use 23 or 25 instead?
