You guys had a wonderful vacation! So glad you enjoyed all the beauties and food of my favorite places. There is a neat channel on RU-vid called "Living the Skye Life". I'm so glad you guys had a good time in Ireland and are safe. I'm French, but have been living in Dublin for the last 9 years. I've come to absolutely hate this city and was afraid you'd have a bad experience with the junkies, dirty streets, and terrible food. I'm glad you still managed to have a good time.
@SupposedlyFun
@SupposedlyFun 25 дней назад
We definitely saw bits and pieces of that side of Dublin, but I think every city has highs and lows. But it's also easier to overlook the negative (or not see them at all) when you're only visiting. Very different to live with it, I'm sure!
@ag4444
@ag4444 25 дней назад
I'm glad that you had such a great trip. I think you misunderstood how the Italians think. I think the exact opposite of how you see it is the case unless I misunderstood your view (sorry if that is the case). US Americans take genetics very seriously as can be seen by you knowing the percentages of where you are from. But whether you're telling them that you are 30, 40, 50 or 80% Italian is really not relevant. It's just a number, it's not about genetics at all, lived experiences are more important. And if you don't speak Italian (I don't know if you can, just saying in general) then you are obviously out in general. Someone with 0% Italian blood that was born and grew up in Italy and can speak Italian can be seen as more Italian than a US American with Italian heritage. So the Italians you met didn't think "50% is not enough", they simply didn't see you as Italian at all. You could have said 25, 80 or 90%, it wouldn't have changed a thing. Literally both of your parents could be Italian, but if you grew up in the US you're a US American, especially if you don't speak Italian. The percentage of your heritage is really not relevant to them. That does not mean that anybody who grew up in Italy is seen as Italian, this is not utopia after all, of course there is also racism involved, so for some people who have never been outside of Italy it can still be difficult to be accepted depending on their ethnical background, but they will still have a bigger shot at being seen as Italian than people who have not lived there no matter what their bloodline says. I think the Irish actually agree that the percentage does not matter, but their reaction is just completely different, because the Irish are just super friendly and excited that you chose to visit Ireland and that you are proud of that heritage. Good for you, I'm glad you got what you wanted out of it. I think the differences between Italy and Ireland are also based on history, language and the relationship between both countries towards the US in general. Half of the population of Argentina has Italian roots. Now I wonder if their experience would be different if they visited Italy (not sure what language they would try to speak). This is actually a very interesting topic.
@SupposedlyFun
@SupposedlyFun 25 дней назад
The difference I was talking about (strictly based on the tourist experience) was that Italian people don't really want to engage with tourists beyond completing a transaction whereas the Irish were ready to talk and get to know you. And the Irish people we met almost uniformly asked if we had heritage from the area, while the Italians we met only discussed it if I brought it up, and then didn't seem very impressed. What I said was mostly based on the experience that the Irish people we met were outwardly curious about our ties to the country and the Italian people weren't. It's not a bad thing or a negative about Italians (as a native New Yorker, I relate to not directly engaging with strangers).
