This was The Body Shop's own brand 'fronted' by Barbara Daly & called 'Colourings'. It was one of, if not the first cruelty free beauty brand in the world. Due to this & its affordable price level, some of it wasn't great to use, the foundation wasn't great, it didn't cover very well & needed very careful application. The blue sponge was unhelpful as the surface was very open & it could leave streak marks if you weren't careful, the powder was rather talcy & the concealer was somewhat hard. However, the rest of the range was quite competent, useable & great value, I used some of the brushes for many years. Makeup, due to technology, has improved massively since this, but Babs' tips are still current to this day, everything else is just a passing fad!
Barbara Daly was Princess Diana's make up artist for a while. She did her wedding make up as well. Diana had a fondness for blue eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, because she had blue eyes, but Barbara taught her to use shades of brown instead.
CDERF Until Mary Greenwell came along and turned her into an icon ! Mary and Sam McKnight really turned her image around. Look up the shots of her by Patrick Demarchelier❤
Stephen Manton Mary Greenwall is such a lady, I adore her so much. She did a few looks on Lisa Eldridge's channel and they were so beautiful and natural
I think she started doing Diana's makeup when she cut her hair off with Sam McKnight and started doing photo shoots with Patrick Demarchelier and Mario Testino.
Venus Zambrana I just mean the style most people associate with the 80’s would look very dated compared to today’s trends. Fads move fast and even makeup trends that were popular in the early 00’s would looked dated.
I agree this tecnique is very accurate ... so far from nowadays one Today study of eyes shapes is totally gone, with the orribile smokey made on every shapes of eyes 😡
Not only that, she actually explains everything and its use. Not just because "it looks good". There's a reason the makeup brand isn't brought up. It's more technique than what brand she's using even though thats important to a degree
Well the artist here is a professional and the aim is to teach people how to do everyday makeup to enhance their features. Today's tutorials are more about showing off their own skill and getting clicks with outlandish unwearable looks.
@@LivLaugh This is what separates beauty gurus (mannymua, patrickstarr, nikkietutorials, laura lee, Jeffreestar) from makeup artists (lisa elridge, wayne goss, Charlotte tilburry, bobbi brown)
Thank god I found this. I’ve been looking for a natural 80’s makeup tutorial. Everyone uses bright colors for an 80’s look when it was really only worn for parties or special occasions.
This was shot in 1987 & released in 1988. Not everyone, in fact most people, didn't walk down the street, at 8 in the morning, with day-glo neon makeup, the 80's is very misunderstood.
@@Chillmax yeah, lots of big messy hair. Although I’m the UK I’m glad to say we didn’t indulge in the crazy, big fringe (bangs) thing that was popular in the States
😲...That model reminds me of my Mom. 😔 I miss her. She looks so pretty. And I don't mean to stray from the topic but the makeup artist has such a Calming voice.
Awww, this has to be the sweetest and most honest comment I've read all day, and I didn't expect it to be on this video, lol. I miss my mom, too, love! :( ♥️♥️ x (two hearts for both our moms)...
Naturally enhanced is always better over 'girl drag'; I love the look of heavy makeup, but for everyday, why torture yourself with drawing stripes all over your face ;-)
Barbara Daly was and is a super talented make up artist, and her style is simple and uncomplicated, as is her tutorial. She was more than capable of doing “full beat” or “cut crease” which is not new, but here she is doing a simple uncomplicated make up that can be adapted for any age, and is totally relevant. She is not selling product, dissing competitors, but simply demonstrating her understated skill. Much admiration.
These are actually the makeup techniques my mom taught me, and it's how I first learned how to do my makeup. Times change, and my routine is a bit lengthier and my colors are not so natural and subtle... but I liked the makeup in this video, it gave me some nostalgia of me as a young girl, watching my mother do her makeup.
Why is everyone saying that we wear way too much makeup today as compared to the '80's? THIS is a more subtle look, but the '80's were known for being loud, colorful, vibrant and excessive. We wore a TON of makeup back then, as well...this is just a less obvious application. Check out movies from that era. We had our over the top circus makeup looks then, too!
This was more of the Christie Brinkley style of makeup, but there were many, many others that were famous and wore vividly wild colors. The pastel eyeliners, eyeshadow and mascara look of the "mod" '60's was back in at the time...and that was NOT fresh and natural lol!
This is how the new "tutorials" from the youtubers should be, instead of just showing the fair of the vanity everyday. This video contains more concrete and solid tips than an entire channel of a youtuber.
i wish people would stop saying things like "girls today should watch this, they wear too much makeup" and stuff like that. things change. makeup has been applied so many different ways throughout history, and i think if we stuck to one way of doing things people would get bored. 30 years from now someone could be watching a video from today and say the same things you're saying about this.
juliabyers girl I was reading some comments I'm like what's it to You? seriously they act like someone took there cookies. it's just makeup and it's fun. calm down lol
what's wrong with looking like drag? if that's what they want. is not your face why do people care. i don't wear lots of makeup everyday and sometimes i do but that's my choice. that's what great about makeup and different styles. i see girls walking with such huge highlight but that's its not my face so i don't care.
I had the video tape of this as a kid and once I watched it, I couldn't stop. I probably watched this thousands of times. It also explains why I had quite a few of Body Shop's brushes. Barbara was my first/original video makeup guru! hahaha... I used many of her techniques for years and they were definitely very useful. I have since "grown" into my own and learned more tips and tricks from others as well. But one of the most important things I learned along the way is, there is no one single way to apply anything and I shouldn't fear making mistakes. I can always wipe it off and re-apply. One particular mua helped me come to this very important conclusion. When I heard that, it was like an epiphany! Nevertheless, I will always thank Barbara for giving me a good head start and for making me love and enjoy applying makeup.
Everyone talking about today's makeup being a lot.. it is popularized by RU-vid makeup gurus, which the new generation of people growing up since 2000's have been watching. But the skills she taught in this video are still used today, and as a beauty consultant, when people come to me to learn, this is still how I teach them. There's no way to teach customers how to do a full beat face in one go, that takes a lot of practice maybe even years for some to be that good. Makeup today is a true art and not everyone can do cut creases and all these crazy looks so easily.
This is infinitely better than any youtube makeup tutorial out there. She not only explains how to apply the makeup but also explains why its done that way.
Besoaria secondaccount that's is just one look that most girls seem to prefer now. doesn't mean is the only one.. there are many tutorial for a minimal fresh look. just got to look those up. or Korean makeup tutorial they are all about minimal fresh.
Besoaria secondaccount I know, I'm tired of seeing girls who normally wouldn't have much of an eyebrow walking around with giant, drawn on, fake looking arched brows.
I was so surprised to see this video! I still have this VHS tape somewhere that I bought in my twenties a I'll see if I can find it! Barbara Daly was so amazing, as well as Colourings for Body Shop she created Make Up for Tesco. A really good value make up that pretty anyone could afford and some of it innovative at the time especially for less expensive ranges. Also many of the techniques she uses here weren't yet used by most women at the time but are much more common now. Many of her techniques for the older model are still relevant today. I could use them myself as I am now 56 :). Her point that less is more and softening you look as you age is much easier now that products are more refined and more pleasant to use today especially in high street cosmetics. I often used to do my friends make up at the time and my mum if she was going to an occasion as she wasn't really into make up. I would have loved to have been a make up artist myself as I always had an interest in it - making scrapbooks from the beauty pages of magazines of different techniques and looks and trying them on myself as the youtubers do today. It's such fun to watch these now and catch up with the modern techniques and products. Enjoy :)
The lighting tip in the beginning is a really good one. Sometimes I do my makeup in my bathroom and then walk outside and look like a freak. The car mirror tells all...
This is one of the best makeup tutorials ive seen. My mum sold makeup in the 80's and I remember she had a few makeup vids like this. I used a makeup video when I was young in the 90's to learn about makeup. Apart from the metaphors - i.e elephant hyde, crepey skin, old skin, mascara sandwich lol this video still rocks!
I really enjoyed watching this. So many techniques that are used today, which I had actually thought were new trends. It sounds like The Body Shop had more natural lip products back then - wish they were like that today!
Zi Zi Hi :) I hope you're having a good day. Just in case, "Zi Zi" is just like if your name account was "Pe Nis". Just type zizi in Google, you'll see by yourself. Bye :p
I am not kidding when I say this is brilliant. I'm cosplaying an anime character based in the late 80s (this looks to be late 80s) and couldn't find a tutorial that gave me an appropriate color pallette to work with, this is perfect.
I'm glad it was entertaining & helpful for you and indeed it was filmed around 1987. Just a note though, and as someone who was there, most women's makeup didn't usually look this good or as well applied. It's wasn't generally the rainbow nightmare that people portray it as, but the women who did wear makeup, usually applied it heavier than this and not subtlety applied either. It would be a bright or dark lip, strong blusher, perhaps a pearlescent eyeshadow, with black eyeliner & lots of black mascara. If you really want an 80's look, you'll know you've got it right, as when you've done it, you probably won't like it 😆.
1980s: Very beautiful and natral makeup look 2017: Put a pond of fondation and make sure your eyebrows are very very very big and very very dark 😂 also make sure you can put as much of highlighter as you can so you can blind people 😂
Trisha Mensch The Science Gal oh my hell yes!!! Whenever I go to the Estee Lauder counter at Macy's I look across to the Mac counter and those girls are caked in makeup. The Mac girls just look gross.
this is a natural makeup look .. people still do these looks just like in the 80s all the crack whores probably wore bright ass colors and hella eyeliner with horrible brows and bright lipstick dark ass blush all over their faces.
If you look at a lot of makeup looks of the 80s, no one really wore natural makeup. They wore a lot of blue or other pastel colored eyeshadow and lip sticks and copious amounts of blush.
I bought this VHS at the Body Shop in the late 80's and learned so much from it. I threw it away in a move and regretted it and thought I'd never see it again. Thank you so much for uploading this. I loved Colorings by Barbara Daly. I still have one of her eye shadow brushes. Great quality.
How refreshing to hear a soft voice and how refreshing to see good manners. No swearwords, ranting, reactivity... wonderful, just wonderful. Thank-you kindly for sharing ❤️🙏🏻❤️
Barbara Daly was the makeup artist on Stanley Kubericks film " A Clockwork Orange " She created the iconic one eye top & bottom false eye lashes that was the signature look for the leading character "Alex."
This brings me back to a Mary Kay class i took on makeup application back in the early 2000s. I thought it was "old school" but realize as I've gotten older than these are just simple, classic techniques.
She's very right about purples and greys looking extra beautiful on brown eyes. Everyone compliments my eyes when I wear a purple smokey eye especially. My eyes are very dark brown almost black, so jewel tones really pop.
Wow.. I remember what an impact Barbara Daly had on us in the uk in the 80s. As far as I can recall, she was the first person to teach us things like putting highlighter on the Cupid’s bow, more than one colour around the eyes... and indeed using eyeshadow colours that are complementary to one’s eye colour. She was quite a revolutionary in those days. I have to say I like the softer more natural look of her make up, rather than the harsh-browed, over highlighted and contoured faces Much of RU-vid encourages us to have these days. I love those soft and natural eyebrows!
I must be old school. This looks very nice, and clean. I enjoy the natural look with out overcomplicating things. I wonder what Barbara would think of today's techniques.
My daughter and her friends are looking for a good 80's makeup guide for their Halloween costumes this year (because of Stranger Things, of course) and I sent her this. I remember watching this as a part of my store training back in the mid 90's too. 😂 A great walk down memory lane. I also showed her how to use two tones of blue or gray eye liner a'la Princess Diana. It's been so much fun. She's helped give me a modern glam big cat eye ruby nose makeover too. Some people are complaining about hoe modern makeup is overdone but I love seeing how our personal expressions come through. We're even working on modifying a 1930's style makeover with a modern twist. Some kids are starting to reject the huge inflated lips look and trying out the 20's&30's cupid's bow technique. But the bottom line with makeup: Have fun and express yourself! No look is "wrong" if you enjoy it! 🥰
I don't think this will help anyone to create an over the top look for Halloween, maybe the Donna Mills (Knots Landing) beauty video would be better, lots of blues & pinks. The thing that would do it, that most can't recreate, is a big frizzy curly perm. Good luck.
I worked for The Body Shop in the 90s and loved their products, and this was basically the routine we used when doing makeovers in the store. I still do a lot of this.
When I started to wear makeup in 1984, age 14, my gramma introduced me to Clinique. I only wore Clinique eye stuff, blush, foundation, lipsticks etc.. BUT I wore the old pink and green maybelline mascara!
Ivette we all do. I was a 79 baby and I can't tell if I remember the 80's as the best era because I was little of course but no it's really was! The clothes are still making rounds, the songs! The movies!! Cartoons and toys lol it was the start, the beginning of the things we have today but innocent all the way around.
i grew up with people who loved the 80s like my parents hahah they were born in the 60's and they said the 80's was their favorite decade. my brother was born 89 but he likes the history of the decade too haha. i'm so jealous of those who were teens and adults during that decade. i LOVE it.
today media SO loud and flashy so these are relaxing. make-up really makes a difference. today, too easy to get out of these habits. people were much more well-dressed and groomed back then.
She is a real, talented artist. Love this. Very refreshing to see after watching so many new age, heavy makeup tutorials. I’m taking lots of great tips from this.
@@RubyTwilite yes! I always thought contouring the nose looks bad because it's actually bringing attention to the nose, when most people try to contour to make it look thinner/smaller, etc. But bringing attention to it does the opposite. 🤷♀️
Absolutely love this ♥ it makes me think of how my mom did her makeup back in the 80s. she was so lovely and classy she wore her make up natural like this and she was so beautiful
The best thing about makeup/fashion trends in general is that it comes and goes. In the video she explained that winged liner looked "old-fashioned" and now it's a popular thing to do. Right now the popular makeup trend is excessive eyeshadow/eyeliner/highlighting/contouring but before you know it this makeup look in the video will become popular again.
I love this natural style of makeup - this is how I like to dress up when I go out. Back in the day makeup was obviously used to enhance your features, naturally which is what makeups original purpose was. These days however it is used to disguise yourself of your beauty.
My mother had this video when I was a child. I learned how to apply makeup watching it. Of course, I don't go through this much trouble on a daily basis, but it's solid advice.
This Video is amazing, and this lady Barbara Daly is such a professional. I love her voice and her teaching method, this is probably one of the best makeup tutorials ever made. EVER...
This make-up artist was so talented, she made these women look great, I was so impressed! I thought this was going to be laughable compared to now, but most of her tips would still work today. I'd be down to see a beauty guru watch this video & try to re-create the look, with as many of the same products they could find on the internet (or similar items if they couldn't find the exact ones).
I love it. this is how I do makeup on my clients. very natural just apply it where its need it to enhance their natural beauty. I'm not into all that contouring and heavy concealer trends of now a days that is not for everybody I feel like it's a mask.
Yes that's funny I thought that when I watched it the other day, especially when she says about shaping your face with blusher. Indeed things & fashions do change, but I think on many points here, Babs remains in the right, if you follow this you'll always look pretty great, no matter what decade it is ;-)
I think a lot of people. (due to RU-vidrs' influence) do use way too much makeup & some forget the cardinal makeup rule: blend, blend, blend & blend everything. Seems contouring, bronzing, blush & highting get overlooked on the blending. I get that RU-vid beauty gurus go a bit more dramatic because they are in front if a camera, but honestly a little bit more blending makes everything look so much better & eliminates that severe stripey bronzer/contour issue. Sorry, I'm done preaching & will step down off my soapbox now
Just watching this again, because - and I am very appreciative of how she speaks of brown eyes. There's no putting them down or speaking of them like an aferthought 'strength of colour' is such a nice way to put it.
I’m so obsessed w 80s makeup ughhhh you don’t need primers or beauty blenders or all this extra stuff for a full face all you gotta do is use your fingers lol. Also I love the look of a bright eyeshadow all the way up to your brow bone it’s so fun and cute. And hot pink lipstick ughh I love it. The 80s looked so fun
I watched this a few years ago when I was a teen & rewatched tonight because the tips are timeless! I like that this professional look is minimal (and therefore affordable) when compared to modern techniques (which can get pricey!)
Classy 80s. Always the best. Women look like themselves and elegant. I can’t wait to see the natural look back and I also hope that this frenzy and arrogant trend of video making will end one day or another...
those blushes especially the powder ones are NOT pigmented at all! If I swirled my brush in my blush the way she did in the video I would have enough blush to cover an army.
Bakerygo This was 'natural' relatively cheap, high st makeup from 30 years ago, thus is what you got, although I disagree on the cream blush which was reasonable 😁
I love how totally timeless the advice in this video is, even though the styles have changed drastically since the 80's and makeup products have improved immensely. The artist presenting this information is really great, she explains things very clearly and has a really calming voice... I wish I had a video like this when I started wearing makeup in the early 90's, I had many years of questionable makeup application lol.
I STILL do my makeup this way. I'm 45 & have been unable to adapt to the new makeup & cannot wear liquid eyeliner, do a cat eye, & can't figure out after hundreds of tutorials how to wear bronzer. I like new makeup like chantecaille but wear it the old way
Guys, everything comes & goes & on & on, at the moment, it's pile it on deep & strong, in a few years it'll be little & natural again, just do what you like & be happy ;-)
