Fashion Historian Amber Butchart and Makeup Artist Rebecca Butterworth are back, this time creating a 1930s-inspired look at Eltham Palace.
Model Sharon Davis looks like she's stepped off the silver screen! We'll show you how you can recreate her glamorous look at home. Along with English Heritage historian, Dr Andrew Hann, we also explore the 1930s and the lives of Stephen and Virginia Courtauld who transformed the medieval palace into an art deco masterpiece.

I had a cake mascara sold by Avon in the 1980s. It had 2 side-by-side wells, one blue and one black, and came with a comb--as shown on the Besame product used in this video--plus a fine-tip brush. The product was meant to be used as mascara and/or eye liner. I used it mostly to line my eyes. I even remember the packaging, it was dark burgundy, with beveled edges. In the United States, you can currently find cake mascara made by Kryolan, Besame, La Femme Pro, CosPlay Supplies, and Longcils. The Longcils cakes come in a few colors, including Brown and Navy! I've also seen indie cosmetics producers offer their versions on Etsy. It's an interesting concept (for one, it's supposed to be more hygienic than mascara in a tube) but I suspect it's not more popular because while it darkens the eyelashes, it doesn't always hold the curl well, and we've grown used to the very curled look.

Both the cake mascara and lipstick are by Besame (BEH-sah-meh, which means "kiss me" in Spanish), a brand that specializes in reproductions of vintage cosmetics. They also have things like a violet-scented face powder, perfume decanters and scents that represent different decades, long-bristled brushes for face powder application...holding the packaging in one's hand (metal cases for the lipstick, embossed logos on the boxes, brush handles that curve sensuously, compacts that open with a push button) feels like stepping back in time--works of art, all of them. And the quality of the lipsticks is top-notch. My favorites are 1946 (Agent Carter's shade, aka "Red Velvet"), 1969 ("Dusty Rose"), 1930 ("Noir Red") and 1970 ("Chocolate Kiss"). I'm buying 1971 "Carmine" next!

I wonder if thats where the term smoky eye came from?
@daniellaalouf
@daniellaalouf 5 лет назад
The first modern smokey eye icon was probably Brigitte Bardot and Mary Quant. Then the ‘90s grungy look was created using one colour blended into a haze of smoke around the eye, sometimes with black pencil applied inside the eye so that the colour was intense at the lash line and gradually became sheer and smokey. This is when the look got its famous name and smokey eyes have well and truly stayed in fashion ever since. It's called smokey because of the hazey smokey-looking effect of the eyeshadow!

Thank you for this wonderful video. As an historical recreator, I've discovered that finding 20th century fashion/makeup/hair instruction is tricky. A lot of it is what the maker THINKS was the look, or modern materials are used because authentic ones aren't available. I'm old, but not old enough to remember the War, let alone the 30s, but my grandmother wore a version of it until she died in 1999 at 101 years of age. I still keep a jar of Ponds Cold Cream in her memory, and find that very few modern products remove makeup, even modern waterproof makeup, as thoroughly and completely. If I have any criticism of your recreation at all it's only that they brow shape is too similar to the 1950s and not the 30s, where the pencil-thin and curved, rather than arched brow was in vogue. I, myself, continued to use Max Factor's Pancake Makeup until I could no longer find it. In my teens my skin was, like most teens, very oily, and I found this makeup had a very slight astringent effect and tended to stay put better than the more modern products that were around in the 60s. The good news is that it can still be found on (surprise!) Amazon. The bad news is the price, a staggering $150 USD. Considering I used to be able to buy it for under a dollar, that's horrifying. Again, thanks for the video, the re-creation, and the lovely side tour of the stunning Eltham Palace.

If my hair ever looked half as vibrant or shiny when I dye it red as this woman's, I'd never dye it another color again =D Such a stunner every time!

MarieleCastán People in the Victorian era didn't really wear makeup as Queen Victoria didn't like it. But actresses and prostitutes did wear some, so that would definitely make an interesting video 😁
