I wish I could have the patience to do french braiding, I would've done with the Ragnar's hairstyle from Vikings show, it's just pain in the ass to do it on one self, arms get tired and just hurt, and you end up nowhere with it :D since I have been growing hair the time I saw Ned's hair from Game of Thrones, then I saw Vikings and Ragnar's hair, and wanted to have that french braid on top that goes into the single tail without shaved sides, and incorporate it within that single braid. Never managed it and I simply have just long ass hair.
@BIOSHOCKFOXX

@@nerofoxkrell It's actually good...since at least portion of people can stand out in subcultures, such as metal and rock community where bunch of guys (including me) have long hair because of dedication of staying true to the community and for other reasons. Personally it started different for me, as an experiment that quickly turned into likability, I looked much better with longer hair than with short hair, but at the same time I didn't wanted just a long hair, so I got inspired by TV shows like GOT and Vikings after which I wanted similar hair, but the coolest ones tend to have french braiding, and it's just so happens it's the hardest one to do as well...

@@nerofoxkrell Not entirely, men used to have long hair until civilization lead to closer living (or rather larger masses of people in this closer living), which lead to constant fleas. No 20th century flea treatment? You shave (or shear) that hair off! Simple as!

Same it's sadly not as long as it used to be because my current job doesn't allow anything longer than shoulder length, but eventually when I can have it really long again I can keep this video in mind. It sucks too my hair was just like Aquamans/Jason Mamoas back when in the day, and now I always hear Women talk about how great his hair is, and I'm just like that was my hair 2 years ago, I guess it is still like his just shorter, I mean it's still wavy and curls at the ends, and it's still really thick.
@LadyCoyKoi
@LadyCoyKoi 4 года назад
@@Werewolf914 What kind of shit job doesn't allow men to wear longer hair styles? If it is that limited, I can't imagine what other limitations it has towards other things that are natural for human beings to have. I heard horror stories of teachers and administrators in public schools forcing little boys to cut their long locks. It is especially retching to learn that those little boys were just practicing an ancient form of filial piety, to which one honors their family by embracing family traits, including growing ones hair out, because it is part of family DNA. In cultures like Native Americans it is like cutting off part of your soul. Hair acts like an antenna to connect one to mother Earth and all those who live on and within it. I really don't understand all of the fuss though. It is just keratin, let it be. If people want long hair, let them. If short, let them. They all still have to wear hair nets and other head gear for protection regardless. >_

I wore the Scythian braids last Friday. Received quite a few compliments and questions about it. I knew that would happen, so I actually brushed up on Scythian history to make an interesting conversation. Did you know: the Scythians were one of the first civilizations to master horseback riding and.....wait for it....they rode armored bears into battle. Adding a couple of accent beads to each braid gave it a nice touch as well. Thank you so much for keeping fresh ideas available to try.

I can confirm how useful braids are for a warrior. I usually wear some kind of braid either three strand, four strand or a rope braid. When I started with Full-Contact Sword Fighting I used a Gjermundbu helmet, which only consists of a plate for the upper head and the face and some mail armor hanging down to about the shoulders. One time my braid together with the chainmail on top of it, saved my neck from quite a hard sword blow (blunt sword of course, but still made of steel). Without the braid as some kind of padding underneath the chainmail it would have been quite unpleasant... Just to clarify it advance: I don´t consider myself to be comparable to an ancient warrior, I´m just pointing out, that braids can be quite useful from time to time ;-)
@silvousplaits
@silvousplaits 6 лет назад
Wow, awesome story!
@therealcarlxii
@therealcarlxii 6 лет назад
Oh, I forgot the most important thing. To all kids out there: Don´t try hitting each other with steel swords at home. To all adults: If you´re trying to hit each other with steel swords, use a complete helmet or braids :-P
@therealcarlxii
@therealcarlxii 6 лет назад
I guess that might be one of the reasons why ancient warriors often wore long hair, just to have additional padding under the helmet. Might also be useful for winter warfare as an additional insulation to keep them from cooling out. Or they just did it to look cool...

Funnily enough, the closest thing we have in the modern day to an authentic celtic man's hairstyle, is that worn by Guy Fieri xD According to various sources, The celts of Britain at least (The celts weren't a people per se, but a large group of individual tribes across western Europe that shared cultural and linguistic similarities) let children's hair grow naturally until they were old enough for war. Then, it would be cut short and dyed with lye to bleach it and arranged in short spikes.

I love history, I love martial arts, I love fashion, although not trends, I love hair, and I love braids; when I kept long hair I always tied it in a braid or two for kickboxing, I always thought it was more comfortable and more practical than ponytails. Will be checking some more of your videos because this one was actually really enjoyable. Almost makes me sorry that I keep my hair super short now, these are super pretty, and don't look too hard for my unskilled hands. But I like seeing myself with short hair, and since I'm a lazy bum not having to blow dry or comb my hair is a blessing, although having to cut it so often is a chore. I hope I remember your channel when I get tired of short hair and decide to grow it out. But with super thin hair I always get annoyed, because it always feels like I don't have enough hair, and no way do I have the patience to use hair products. Well, rant over. TL,DR: hair good, braids great, this video excellent.

I really love all of your videos. This was the first video I ever saw of yours, and I've just stumbled over it again. It's a favorite, in part because it introduced me to your videos in general and they have been a real gift, but also because as much as I love historical dramas, you are right about how inaccurately hairstyles are often depicted. I love seeing the famous Suebian knot, and I've enjoyed trying these styles out on my own hair. I have naturally wavy, curly, and also rather thick hair that I've learned more about ways to style from your channel than anywhere else. Thanks so much!

Thank you for demonstrating those beautiful plaids! Two quick annotations, if you allow: First: The Suebenknoten is traditionally done on the side of the head above the ear. Second: The way you presented the ethnic groups is like you would say "Today I show you traditional hairstyles of the French, the Japanese and the firefighters...". XD While Sueben and Scythians are names for tribes (...), Vikings isn't. Viking means "seafarer"; the people you are talking about are North-Germanics or Scandinavians. There have been Suebian vikings, and maybe even some Scythian vikings, too. ;) It may be nitpicking for some, but us Germanic descendants are still here. Lots of love, and keep those lovely hairstyles coming. Elle from the Chattic folk.

@elainelouve 6 лет назад
Also I think the Vikings series as little as I've seen it had some hairstyles inspired by the Norman warriors. And they too were "vikings" with Scandinavian origins. With hair cut really short in the back and longer on the top.
@silvousplaits
@silvousplaits 6 лет назад
True, longer hair tended to be more of a Scandinavian style. One of the books I linked in the video description explicitly says that the Scots modeled their long hair on "Scandinavian tradition." And there's a funny story in the second book about how King Harold's army was scouting the size of a Norman army, and remarked how "their army consisted entirely of priests" (because of the short hair).

Bless you! I am a man and your channel isnone of the strongest motivation I had to grow my hair. At this point the shortest are 20cm long and the longest barely 30cm. So the average would be 24. How long do you think they should be to perform this hairstyle? I can't wait. Xd
@silvousplaits
@silvousplaits 6 лет назад
The first half of the Viking style can be done with nearly any length, you should be ready for that now. For the Scythian braids, I'd say shoot for ~40cm. The Suebian knot will need at least armpit length I think.

@silvousplaits
@silvousplaits 6 лет назад
I'd like to make a video like this for women that would include the Elling Woman. I've got the style down as the way it currently is on her body, but I'm still wondering if the braid length wasn't wrapped up more at the actual time of styling, and become unwound a bit in the events that led to her death and burial. Will probably muse on that a bit in the video. Those sticky questions I'm sure you deal with all the time :)

I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. I’m a hair stylist and I’ve been wanting to learn more traditional braiding and styling for myself. I’ve always loved low maintenance type of protective styling but no one I’ve met in the industry so far knows and I haven’t been very lucky finding tutorials. I can’t wait to incorporate these styles into my daily work and personal fashion. Thank you!
