One of the comments had said it could not be a caltrop as Wisconsin had no involvement in the war, so I researched it out of curiosity and found this. What did Wisconsin do during the Civil War? With the outbreak of the American Civil War, the northwestern state of Wisconsin raised 91,379 soldiers for the Union Army, organized into 53 infantry regiments, 4 cavalry regiments, a company of Berdan's sharpshooters, 13 light artillery batteries and 1 unit of heavy artillery. So maybe this factory at one time made these for that reason

Would make sense. There may have even been an older small iron working factory there before the machining shop was built years after the war.

I love how excited you guys get whenever you fish up stuff. It's great. I wonder if you are sometimes worried of finding anything that might be irradiated, especially if its near old factories or where factories used to be? Perhaps is a good idea to have some sort of radiation meter with you. I mean, the likelyhood of something being dangerous is small, but its just a thought. There have been stories of people bringing in a piece of metal that "looked cool" only to end up being irradiated and making people sick.

I’m sure you know that 2nd hole on the beer can was not for “sharing” but for air. I lived in an era before the pop tops, in an area where beer was the cocktail of choice. Your "share" can top, with two holes....In the olden days LOL when we had to use an opener, church key to get into the can, if you didn't put the second hole in, it wouldn't come out of the can to drink. Needed the second hole on th opposite side to make it easier to drink. I am not old enough, however to remember the horse prods, but, I have seen a lot of church key, poptop soda and beer cans. LOL Another great video.

You should try going in the kayak and using your underwater fish camera attached to a pole so you have better control. With the huge piece you've been finding I'm thinking that the actual manufacturing machines ended up in the water. Some of those big pieces look like machine housing to me. The solid cubes, rectangles and cylinders look like bar stock. I wonder if there's a way for you to be able to test the metal to figure out what it is made of. You should talk to someone from the local historical society. They might be able to tell you what the company manufactured. I believe that some people would tie a rope or string to their six pack of beer and put it in the water to chill it. Could be a few lost six packs that you could be finding. The one's that are buried in the mud and silt are the best preserved because they haven't been in oxygen environment that decomposes the metal. ❤️ Thanks for the videos I love watching.

I know it'd be far more common in less-developed countries, but... Have you ever accidentally pulled up something radioactive? Like an orphan source? Most radioactive elements look like plain ol' lumps of metal until your stomach decides to invert itself and your bones liquefy from the inside out. Might not be common enough of a risk where you are to warrant getting a geiger counter, but ya never know. They used to paint watch faces and glaze pottery with some pretty nasty stuff back in the day. If there were ever factories using radioactive elements in your area, it might be worth nicking a simple geiger counter for your escapades. The more dangerous radioactive orphan sources you could run into are the Co 40 pellets from radiotherapy machines, but those are pretty heavily regulated. If anything, checking for radioactive traits in the stuff you dredge up would just be for funsies.

The 2 hole can tops are from back b4 1970's. We had to use Church key, pop 2 holes 1 to drink from the other so we didn't drown cause of airflow. That 4th caltrop was a full size, not worn down like the others, or it was a different model, prob utilized for different purposes. You really should wash off those steel billets (big chunkers) cause Blacksmiths would prob be very interested in that Antique steel, you could prob get better return as opposed to scrapping it. Most of those you are pulling up are definitely from a machine shop which was using a large metal lathe to manufacture parts for many different uses. Those bottle thing looks like a pin of some type for something or maybe a spacer for some part of their manufacturing process.

The cube may be an old calibration cube. Old shops would have off cuts that match dimensions of what they are making, it was faster to check their parts against the cube than to measure each time. As for the metal “bottle” you found, I think that’s an old scale weight, it would have a small threaded section that a small brass handle would have screwed into.
