The 5 Normandie Landing Beaches are really fascinating to see and huge in size - 70 miles from one end to the other (but not contiguous). Many interesting museums in the area, also. Bayeux is a logical, and lovely, place to be based. (We were there last fall).
Several reasons, the wind was moving quite fast so it would have quickly blown away, it would have prevented naval gunfire on german positions, it would have made co-ordination after landing significantly harder, and the beaches are just too large
Yeah well, over here in America there's this pretty bad pothole at the end of my road. Sometimes I hit it and I worry about my shocks. It's really inconvenient.
