Wypipologist Michael Harriot takes us back to Mound Bayou, Mississippi, the birthplace of the civil rights movement. A place where T.R.M. Howard, Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, Katie Hall, Isiah Montgomery, and Aretha Franklin all have a connection. Learn why this sacred place is a part of "The Real Gangstas of Black History" series on theGrio Daily.
"It was the only place in Mississippi and almost the entire South where Jim Crow didn't exist"

So much history to be proud of. My grandmother owned a restaurant in Mississippi, and hosted the student Freedom Riders when they came to the south... She was also a teacher and midwife. My uncle Milburn Crowe compiled a lot of historical papers on Mound Bayou that sit in University libraries. He is well known as the historian of Mound Bayou (and Mississippi generally ) I too, remember the mosquitoes but loved the red clay. I remember the water was so smooth and almost sweet to the taste.

My Granny on my daddy side told me bout Mound Bayou, she say that our family (Stampley's) helped founded the town. Never dug into it more than a couole of obituaries

My family is from mound bayou and my grandma was a sharecropper there along with her 8 siblings. She moved to IL in the 1970s. However, when i visited mound bayou as a kid, the mosquitos were NO JOKE!! i want to visit again as an adult as i had no real appreciation for it as a child. Much love to my people!!!

Don’t forget, Benjamin Montgomery was the inventor of the first ship propeller made from wood and steel but he was unable to patent it due to the confederate laws that assumed their slaves technology as ownership of the master. I o my assume some of his earnings were paid out to him to some degree if Jefferson Davis’ brother had any humility in him. His invention was debuted on confederate ships before the union seized it and brought it to their navy school in Annapolis after the “civil” war. Listen, I have a story for you good Sir, one I’ve been trying to find out how to tell that runs from the 1890s all the way up to now. How can I get in touch??
