Dude save your excess gold leaf, make it a fine dust and add it to a clear pain it would make a really nice glitter coat. Also I love the texture it gave the bait.
I found your channel only a week or two ago and I have already been inspired to make my own lures. Got a 6 inch glide bait based on a mullet, a 3 inch crankbait based on an estuary cod and a 1 inch bony bream crankbait. Takes a little longer with no power tools except for a drill. Ordered a bandsaw and linisher today.
I think the texture looks awesome! I remember watching a video many years ago of an old man applying gold leaf, which was his trade. He was bald but had some peach fuzz on his head. He used a sable paint brush to manipulate and apply the gold leaf. His trick was to quickly brush his head with the sable brush, transferring static to it to pick up the gold foil and apply to the glued surface.
Sorry I'm a little late but here I am! The lure looks gorgeous!!! Swimming motion is pretty realistic. Loved it! Another fun fact: gold is also an awesome conductor of electricity so it's very used in electronics like your cellphone or computer!
Dude your videos are simply awesome! You should have your own bait making TV show! Your a full blown legend in my books. The fun facts are superb and the fishing with your lady is just so entertaining. I love it. Oh, and obviously your propper fantastic at lure making. Really different. Please don't stop!
I love the look of gold leaf on lures i do it myself , i found if you use a soft brush you can get a smoother finish , just softly brush it until smooth
You have a real willingness to innovate, and my mind is blown at how good you are at getting desirable actions from the lures you create! Awesome work!
Using the Gold Foil was a novel idea, I use Florist's foil that's used to cover flower pots , it has a fine crinkle finish that reflects well . 3M spray adhesive on the foil and bait leaving overnight to set before applying worked the best for me. Before top coating with a coat of 3M two ton Epoxy I would put the anglers name on the lure with Press Type I bought from office supply stores, it comes in all colors including Gold which I sometimes used on the dark back of the lure, Black on the belly like a Rapala would have. That Gold lure was really attractive and the darting action would (OWN) any Northern within 50 yards of the boat !
I was watching with bated breath when you started applying the gold leaf...I've failed many a time trying to do the same exact thing you did......AWESOME RESULTS....another epic bait!!!
The swimming action of that swimbait is really amazing, good job as usual. I think more clear coat maybe 2-3 more layers would do wonders with the depth
Everytime i see you posted a new video i drop everything amd have to watch it. I never thought i would love watching someone build lures and a reel but i do!
I really like your old clearcoat used before the UV. Seemed to give the bait a thick gloss. Now I know nothing about clearcoat just a fan of your work. Bait looks awesome.
Absolutely LOVE this! The action is absolutely insane 🙌🏻🔥👏🏻 I had a massive grin on my face on that first retrieve! I think the texture also gives it a much more realistic look. Massive thumbs up on this one dude! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
MB Iv watched all your videos on this channel. I find your work so good. I wait for your videos every week. I talked my husband into making a luer of a lighting bug. He didn't do so good. If you get a chance would you build one please? Well thank you so much for the hours of entertainment. Keep up the fantastic work.
I love you videos! they are really entertaining and supper fun to watch.you probably are one of my favorite channels on RU-vid. Keep up the amazing work.
Purrdy bait man! It has a nice action too. Even though you're not supposed to, I airbrush gold paints. It does send gold particles into the air, but I can get the same effect as the transfer with it. You gotta make it really thin and apply many coats allowing it to dry inbetween. It's tempting to just lay in on thick but you get dimpling or dripping. It goes well with a green top coat.
Great build, when the weather breaks, you should attach an underwater camera on your line so ppl can see your lures in action catching fish. I think I remember you using an underwater camera previously, but I can't remember if it was attached to your line or not. Thanks for sharing, see ya next Sunday.

Incredible Video Congratulations Fisherman!👍👏👏👏🎣🐟🐠😊
Man, you are an awesome craftsman. Love to watch you build and catch.. I think the best way to apply the gold sheets is first cut the big sheets in smaller squares like 2x2 inch or 4x4, this way you have less loss. Then apply the sheet metal with brush with a broad, soft tip. And if you like a seemless, smooth look, you can clearcoat it apply the gold with the brush and epoxy it again... Just my thoughts... Cheers
Just figured out how you can take over RU-vid by storm! You need to win over all the kitten video lovers! Just make a kitten 🐱 lure that swims realistic and BAM! The internet is yours...Right up to the point you show it being devoured by a 50 inch Muskie... Perhaps the idea needs a bit more polishing.
You need to get out on the water my friend. Get a boat and do an entire video fishing the baits that you have already made. As always fantastic job on the bait.
I think you diminished your credibility with the immediate musky cat post after tho haha Not that we dont all want to see a musky eat a cat.. Just the winning of the cat video people hearts tho lol
The action on that thing is so perfect it’s not funny. Best one you have made yet. And your editing skills makes me flaccid haha. Thank you again marling baits.
If you clearcoat the lure before you apply the foil so that its smooth as glass you get way less of that textured surface and more smoother finish on the foil.
Superb. Nice work, lure swims great. Can't wait for you to get some of these lures in front of some active fish when the weather changes. On a day when the fish seem to be really active, you should see how many of your lures you can get bit on, especially ones you don't have footage of catching fish with. Could be a fun compilation
I know gold leaf can be very forgiving and does not necessarily need to be laid in one sheet, using a bushy brush is useful for application too. It will also stick to itself if you burnish it with an agate stone or burnishing tool and will then become very smooth, shiny and uniform.
I would like to see your version of antique lures, dingers or flatfish lures come to mind... Recreate the classics with your special style and twist...
God damnit I live for the fun facts !!!!! Your videos are seriously the best man. Everything you do is amazing and always surprised at your skills. Your videos are #1 I watch on RU-vid . Keep it up
really exciting action for the fish to see i bet! especially when you reel it a bit slower so it looks like its looking for food. Stick that on a hefty rod and I wouldn't be surprised if some big game went for it.
Awesome video Marling Baits !! Keep up the amazing work Marling Baits !! Cheers William !! And also Marling Baits I love your RU-vid videos and your RU-vid Channel I hope you get to 200 Thousand Subscribers Marling Baits !!
I've tried incorporating gold leaf into paintings before with much frustration and limited success. For me anyway, it is tricky stuff. I think I'll need to try the back of the pinky method in any future attempts.
Awesome bait! I'd love for you to make a Florida wild golden shiner with that foil...I'm sure some big bass nuts down here would go nuts for something like that.
Been away from your channel for a few months Life has hit me hard lately But as soon as you started the montage and said fun fact I was like damn I missed this lol Hope that doesn't sound weird Hope you keep coming out with more videos man!
That glide bait should be killer on pre and post spawn bass that are moving around. When you do a homemade rod, buy a graphite blank from northerfork composites. I'm pretty sure they will send you the catalog for free. A really good blank will run you around 150 bucks unless it's on sale. You wanna leave as much of it as possible bare graphite, and make sure you use the rod building epoxy, not just any off the shelf stuff. I did it and it's the best rod I've ever owned, competitive with a gloomis. And it's customizable. I did red and silver on mine to match the pflueger reel I got for it. Hopefully this year I can make a bait caster. It's about 200 bucks for all your materials but easily worth it when your getting the power and sensitivity of a 600 dollar off the shelf rod. Just make sure you do not scratch or chip the graphite. Graphite is incredibly strong but once you score it, it will snap like a tooth pick
Missed opportunity for a golden goldfish lure, this looks good though and I look forward to seeing what else you make. FYI, if you use a burnishing tool you'll get a smoother, shinier finish.
If you want a smoother finish, use a proper gold "size" and you can burnish it smooth. It also takes details better than spray adhesive. But this texture is actually very nice for this purpose.
Awesome craftsmanship als always! I hope you will catch some luxury fish with that someday! Can you make some lures with total focus on action or a metal flakes paintjob like a bumpercar or maybe a german submarine?
