A detailed look at 15 real quotes for replacing your air conditioning and furnace. With prices ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 it's probably your third biggest purchase after a house and a car, but it's a difficult thing to assess, and to feel good about what you're choosing. What's a good price? How do you choose the equipment? Do efficiency ratings matter? I'm a homeowner that likes to research and understand home technology and I recently replaced both my home ducted HVAC systems, replacing old air conditioners and gas furnaces with modern electric heat pumps that are quiet and efficient. In this video I explain the benefits of going for dual speed or variable speed equipment, and whether it's worth going for more efficient equipment with higher SEER, HSPF or AFUE ratings. I also explain the difference between AC and furnace, heat pumps and dual fuel systems. Warranty is another important aspect, both for parts and labor too. Supply chain constraints have made costs rise across the board and there's equipment shortages so doing your research ahead of time and proactively replacing a system that's near the end of its natural life is better than waiting until it breaks down and scrambling to get quotes. Make sure you check if your state or utility offer incentives for upgrading your HVAC system. Many provide subsidies on more efficient equipment. Finally, financing is important as most people are going down this route rather than paying cash. Just like the equipment prices, financing options are all over the place. The most important thing is to shop around!
Quotes include equipment by American Standard, Trane, Daikin, Fujitsu, Bosch, and York. Prices include a communicating thermostat, where required (for all variable speed systems).
