ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

Hey, y'all, I know you voted for the one-day pack + move, but I had to put my home back in order first...and I didn't have the energy to make two videos. 😢 Please like this video and make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss more details about the move in next week's video. ❤

I voted for this video, so I was happy you did this one first:) After all you can do whatever you want on your own channel, I'll watch every video because I like your way of talking and thinking. I admire your coolness about this situation of moving twice.. wow! And you even managed to upload a new video... I'm seriously impressed. I wonder what solutions you came up with about the surface clutter on the table, because I have the same issue.. (or is it just discipline haha) Greetings from Vienna :-*

You should never block a window or a door with furniture, it is a terrible decoration mistake. Windows and doors have a function, should not be blocked. It looks terrible also. Same applies to furniture against walls.

I'm sorry you had to go through all this. I hope the kids were able to stay at the same school. My biggest gain from decluttering is that I have a place for everything. When I come home there is a place for my shoes, my sunglasses, my hat, jacket all with easy access. Straightening up takes so much less time. I've said before I'll never be a minimalist but my house is much more manageable.

I think that fact that you are so inspiring and calming (and the fact that you could vacate one place and MOVE a Family of 4 to another location in 7 HOURS) speaks volumes about how living with less stuff makes room for what matters more! Bless you and your sweet family. ❤

I have 4 cats with fur in white, black, grey, brown, and orange. I don't think it would matter what colour or floors are, if it's hard floors we'll always see the fluff they leave behind 😆 I consider the visibility a blessing, though, cause now I'm aware of all the stuff that had been hiding in the carpets before. This just inspires me to sweep/vacuum more.
@8evanesse
@8evanesse 9 месяцев назад
My ONE cat (calico) has all of those colors! 😂 We just replaced our carpets with hardwood floors, and you’re so right, they’re light, but still show all of her fluff a lot better than the (probably pretty gross) carpets. I’m so glad we got rid of the fur traps, cuz there’s no way we’d ever give up our awesome kitty.

Oh wow, that sucks, Marissa! Having housed many homeless people in the last 11 years in my job, often landlords have to give at least 30 days notice to end leases (90 days in some states). I love that you and your husband were able to pivot in what seems to be the least disruptive way for you and your family. Big love to you all, and hope you are resting well and settling in! 💖

Wow! Seven hours to move and totally settled in the following day. That truly must be some sort of record for a family of four. I can't wait to hear the explanation of WHY they had to shuffle you off to another rental so quickly, and I can't imagine how any explanation they offered would be sufficient. How stressful! You have dealt with this transition like a PRO! I am sorry it didn't work out, but every cloud has a silver lining :) We're in the UK and we have TV's in every bedroom (we homeschool from home) so the bigger teens use the tv for videos or shows relating to work, they also use them for game time or movies etc. We have a tiny home and only 1 small livingroom area (10 PEOPLE in less than 800sqft) with 3 bedrooms. So we make use of every space for everyone's free time, school and gaming!

When I was growing up we had TVs in every room but as an adult I’ve only ever had one in the living room. It’s nice because if we (spouse & I) really wanted to we can just use our laptops or iPads to watch something in whatever room we want without having to have additional TVs. My grandma even had one in her kitchen and I admit I do like to watch RU-vid sometimes when I’m making dinner!

@@d31an3y I think it’s relatively common for the oldest generations (my grandma is 85). Lots of women back in the day did their work in the kitchen and why not have a little background entertainment or news on as well? Thank you for showing how real life can get in the way sometimes. While I don't aspire to be a minimalist per se, I am in the process of decluttering 60 years of stuff. One of the things you mentioned in a previous video was having a memory box. What a great idea and one I had never thought of before. So now it's my goal to have just 1 box dedicated to my most precious treasures instead of having them scattered throughout in random boxes and drawers. As for TVs....my husband would have one in every room if I let him! Instead, we have 1 in the family room and 1 outside by his BBQ.

For the “ghost doors” problem: remove one of the hinge pins, bang on it outside with a hammer to bend it slightly, then reinsert. The slight bend will cause some resistance In the hinge so it doesn’t swing so freely. Do a second hinge if the door is particularly troublesome. (You may not want to do this since it is a rental, but I thought I would share it help any one who needed the info.)

Marissa, Your stress of having everything in disarray was palatable at the beginning of your video. Once all was done, the stress was non existent. This is a tangible example of the absolute calmness minimalism can bring. While watching the before shots and then the afters, I was thinking how much easier having a low inventory helped you accomplish the goal of getting things in order, and you addressed that later in the video. You and your family have had quite the adventure moving back to the U.S. Hoping you can soon find a living situation that is truly yours. Looking forward to next week's video. ❤

You're such an inspiration to me. A month back I discovered your channel and decided to sort my clutter after almost 3 years of it building up... I wasn't able to take care of it because through all this time I suffered complications after a hand injury. It made me fell into depression cause I used to work creating with my hands. Such a bad period in my life. I decided to come back to college, so I could get a less physical job (I'm in my early 20s). Tomorrow is my first day of classes. Before this day, I really wanted to get rid of all the clutter that was holding me back. I still have boxes of things to donate but I'd still call it a success. My Dear, How well you made lemonade out of the lemon situation! ☺ Moving is the reason I am struggling to learn to be more with less, more like you and have the energy and chee / life force to sort and declutter, I want to move but at the same time I am afraid to move. The last time I moved from a beautiful log cabin, I missed it so much. Now I think I want to move to the beach, but what if I miss this house? Since you were forced out? OMG unbelievable! You keep your place so clean and orderly. Most landlords would love to have such a tidy tenant. I sincerely hope that you and all like the new place better than the old one? Stay strong and Carry ON, Blessings, 💕

I can’t imagine having to find a whole other place for the entire family to live on such short notice, that must have been so stressful and scary. This, more than anything, has really opened my eyes to the fact that not having to cart around and manage as many belongings would make not just my daily life easier, but make it a lot easier and safer to deal with an emergency. Thank you for sharing not just the ups, but the downs as well. If it makes you feel any better, I like this place better than the place that evicted you guys. It’s their loss, they’re not going to find cleaner tenants anywhere! ❤

How incredibly stressful! The new place looks lovely. My son and I use a tv in the living room, and I have a small tv with a built in dvd player I rarely use to play some of my favorite movies while I sew, craft...etc. I hope your new place works well for you.

I am so sorry you all had to go through such a stressful transition ...your new space is gorgeous and so peaceful, though! What are the little white animals in the boys' rooms? Nightlights? Sound machines? They are SO CUTE! 🥰

Thank-you for humanising minimalism ❤ I've got 8 small boxes, 2 carry-on bags + a bed to move to our next house, and it's nothing compared to the average home, but 100% it gets messy sometimes, with life and kids 🤷‍♀️ it's still a big job to clean up, but not a BIG BIG job, like the average quantity of stuff in a home.

I'm happy you found a home (which looks nicer than the last one you were in) so quickly... but I'm sorry you and your family had to go through the stress and upheaval. I hope you're settled in now and have an opportunity to rest and relax a little.

I live in England. We have one television which is in the main living area. I love the way you were able to sort your home in a day. Also, all that extra furniture!! I'm so glad that you were able to get it taken away to give you more space.

I loved this video! Thank you for sharing. ❤ We had to move suddenly into a small furnished rental apartment, and I’m having much of the same struggles. No closet space or places to hang clothing, store shoes, ect. It has been a journey trying to work out the kinks, for sure!

It doesn't take long for things to get out of hand, especially when you are sick. Then throw in an unexpected move and stir--chaos!! I hope things calm down, looking forward to hearing the rest of the story, how crazy and disruptive. We have two tv's in our house--one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The one in the bedroom is at least 14 years old, and it's small, but it's nice to have when one of us isn't feeling well.

I can't believe you were able to find another furnished house so quickly....unless that is part of the story with the owners of the place you were evicted from. Can't wait to hear about that. Thank goodness you don't have a 'typical' amount of belongings so that it was doable in 7 hours! Great looking house! You are definitely the McGiver of home solutions!

I'm trying to downsize our stuff as we pack to move, just so the other end isn't as stressful - you clearly demonstrate how that works in practice! I'm in Australia and we personally have one TV, though the kids both have tablets now that they do watch TV on before dinner and on the weekends. I know some people who have a TV in their bedroom but I greatly dislike that idea, and will never let my kids have TVs in their rooms. When we move we'll be getting a second TV so we can have a grown ups only living room library TV area and they can have their kids arts and crafts toys TV area (and no more TV in the kitchen/dining space yay!!)

Hallo from Germany! I think this was an awesome video, because it was real and relatable. Being Greek I can confirm that 20 years ago it was very common to have 2 or 3 TVs in every home, but nowadays there are many families in Greece that do not even own one TV. Especially younger people in Greece prefer to use their computers or their mobile phones instead of watching television. We as a family do not own a television and are not planning on buying one. Sending love to you and your family 🙂

Dear Marissa, I send you power and happiness to manage all you have to go through. I gonna move next month and I am not YET a minimalist. But I am working on it. We have no TV at all, but a laptop to watch something on RU-vid or Netflix, especially the kids. I have six of them. In our area ( Germany, near Frankfurt) most families have one TV in the living room. Best wishes! Rachel

I love how you reused the "tv stand" in the new den! The place looks very relaxing now. Growing up we were not allowed tvs in our rooms! And my husband likes 1 in ours but it is barely ever used and if it is, it's not by me or if im in there. 😊

We live in the U.S., Wyoming and we only have one large TV in our family room. I made it a point many, many years ago when my children were young, to make TV watching a family event so we have one ☝️. Honestly, our TV is rarely on but I do know people who have it on as background noise. I love my peace and quite and listening to the hum of the fan or refrigerator😉 Best of luck with this new place🍀

One thing you have done so well is show how minimalism allows you to carefully craft but then quickly put together a home in any place. You have spent a lot of time to hone what possessions best work for you and respresent you, and you are able to make just about any space work for you.

I'm so sorry you had to rush out of the other house! How stressful it must have been! But as usual, you look your "zen self", and are getting on with life! I want to be more like that. Very satisfying to see the before and after too! Regarding TV units: we only own one, not much of TV people and where we live, in London, the places tend to be rather small, so not enough space for extra TV's! Love from us and good luck with everything, looking forward to seeing your next videos!

The doors closing like that means they're not plumb. I wonder if the house has settled or if it was a shoddy job. Thanks for showing your process and reset. You and your family are such go-getters and have such a great attitude. Blessings on this place being "good enough for now" until you find your permanent home. It looks great!
