real life vs. online trends (they're totally different worlds)

I remember telling my friend Starr that her sambas are like really fashionable online and are like the “it” shoe and she just tells me “ oh they’re just my biking shoes” and that made me realize I need to ground back into reality 😂😅 and that online is truly a small bubble.

People whose job is not to buy clothes and take photos for social media don’t have as much time to be shopping constantly and it is harder to justify to throw away or stop wearing clothes after a couple of months.

I used to follow this RU-vidr who does commentary on beauty standards. I had to stop supporting her because she was clearly chronically online and made issues sound way bigger than they really were to a massive audience of young girls. I unfollowed her when she said Shein is bad but it’s impossible not to shop there in today’s society because people will make fun of you if you’re not up to date on ever microtrend. I was like…wtf?? Who IRL is gonna make fun of you for wearing distressed wide leg jeans instead of a diesel miniskirt? PLEASE touch some grass

I live in Paris. So it should be where the trends are visible on the streets. Well, they are not. What is visibly trendy within teenagers is the overall y2k pieces in a very minimalistic version (simple crop tops, wide trousers, flares, cargo). For the milennials - skinny jeans are still a big thing. It all has nothing to do with online trends, trends of the year, top street trends or esthetics. I see maybe few people per day (to be counted on one hand) that are dressed interestingly. Even if i spend a full day in metro and cross the more snobbish areas. You see money, not specifically anything creative and fun. I have knitted myself a balaclava last year. I have never seen anyone but me wearing it. Same goes for a lot of other hot pieces from the previous years. So i seriously wonder where are all the instagram people of Paris hiding.

As someone living in NYC I see most of the "online" trends everyday. I think maybe the "real life trends" are more common in less metropolitan areas.

I want to say on maxi skirts being more of an online trend: as someone that’s worn maxi skirts consistently for 4 years now, I think the biggest reason it’s not as popular IRL is all the people that look at you like you’re crazy for wearing them. Sadly, it seems like any fun, out there trend that’s not a top gets you some very unwanted negative attention

Speaking as a teen POC who likes to walk around Brooklyn with friends; Maxi skirts ARE a real life trend but I mostly see them on black or other poc paired with body jewelry and other "alternative" pieces like the big bulky boots and deconstructed knitwear and layering. But then again, I spend more time in busy city areas where you're more likely to be exposed to more stuff so maybe I only see it because of the SHEER QUANTITY OF PEOPLE that exist here 🤷

The IRL trends feel slightly dated already to me because a lot of what is being worn is what fashion girlies wore two years ago because of thrifting/ just being ahead of the trend curve and now things we wore two years ago is being mass produced

I always say there’s such a large disparity between what ppl wear online and what ppl wear irl. Like obviously online trends have an influence but they’re always interpreted in a much more diverse way cos most ppl, at least where I live, don’t have the money to be dogmatically adhering to online aesthetics but I think that often results in more interesting styles like they’re usually more unique cos people’s actual ‘long term’ closets have to be incorporated into styling.

I live in Brazil and let me tell you something, if online trends tend to take long to hit real life, I feel like they take way longer to hit here. Cargo pants are a huge thing but here you can't see people wearing them, even when they were all over our fast fashion stores. I feel like the trend here is the wide leg jeans + cropped top combo, in the most different ways.I feel like trends never really go out of style, we're just recycling what we have done in the past. If a trend trully matches your personal style, it'll never go out of style for you. I personally loved the dopamine dressing (wearing really bright colors) we had back in 2021 and I really feel like it matches my style and I'm glad that most of my pieces from this trend are thrifted.

I live in orange county california (county next to Los Angeles) and even the fashion girls that I see are a few trends "behind" the online trends. And I hate saying that someone can be behind the trends, it feels so gross that people are expected to consume so much. Love the video Laini!

I work on a college campus, and it's been wild watching the microtrends fly past, specifically the last two years. Meanwhile, the second you step out of the campus bubble, everyone's in their preferred style of jeans, sweatshirts, and flannels.

When the trends get into real life they have truly become mainstream, then they’re immediately no longer trendy, it’s trend cycle

Sambas are such a funny trend to me. For women, they used to only be popular in the queer community. I bought a pair years ago when I came out, and always called them my lesbian shoe. I think they’re super cute but I hope the trend goes away so I can go back to knowing who’s queer and who’s not lmao

I wore a Y2K vintage sequen skirt to the club like a month ago, bc I was seeing the style trending on American Instagram so much, but still I got so many weirded out looks, and my Gen Z little brother told me that it just looked outdated, not vintage and trendy. Fyi I live in Mexico, so trends can take 2-5 more months to get here

The trends in the midwest at least in Minnesota and Wisconsin are honestly years behind what I see online. I’m kind of thankful though because I don’t feel “too late” on trends from months ago because it’s still brand new to my area.

it’s so funny bc this is how i have been trying to explain sustainability/shopping my own closet first (to myself and my insta obsessed friends) before buying into [“chronically online”] trends bc the reality is most ppl only confidently wear these flamboyant (for lack of better word) pieces when they travel [to cities] or for (rare/imaginary) special occasions. it has always seemed soooo wasteful (and lowk corny😭) to me to buy every single trendy item under the sun w the only goal being to flex/signal to strangers online that you’re “in the know” and have the sought after “it” item, idk like it almost never gives personal style ever but rather superiority complex/validation seeking and i think that’s what upsets me most about it as a fashion lover/anthropologist; it lacks that spark of unique individuality where a person’s personality gets to shine through ON TOP of it already being so wasteful bc it’s never ACTUALLY worn by the person irl😭 idk it’s so strange watching regular ppl scramble to keep up w the jones’ of literal influencers (like half the stuff they even own isn’t gifted pr??) forgetting that their whole job…is to get ppl to overconsume and buy things that reflect a (manifested) conceptual lifestyle they do not currently and/or may never live!?!😭😭 and i’m by no means all that much better than my peers as i too have been and still do fall victim to this phenomenon but as w anything i do i try to be superrrr conscious of it esp as i progress through life haha

as someone who’s 5’2” and loves to be comfortable, i never felt more “myself” until i put on a pair of wide leg crop jeans. I absolutely love the cut on myself and cannot stand to wear anything else except leggings and cargo pants. also living in new england everyone basically wears cargos, jeans or leggings, chelsea boots, shackets or plaid jackets and beanies. anything warm and comfortable. also longer wool trench coats and dr martens are popular!

laini i rate that you find models of a different body types and ethnicities for these trends! It lets us have the opportunity to probably see someone who looks like us within each clip! Its really exciting

I think a lot of “online” fashion is just not practical for actually wearing. It looks great for a pic but only at certain angles or you can’t commute in them like biking or walking somewhere.

I feel like one of the big things that separates online vs real life trends is that most people are day to day dressing for work/run errands. Like the recent micro mini trend which is obviously not practical or realistic. Also my Dad has worn Sambas my entire life so the idea that they are super hard to get is wild to me.

I find it really interesting to try and analyze the trends where I live. Flared leggings/yoga pants are *super* trendy at my school, most of the “cool” girls wear them. Loungewear or really casual clothing is trendy where I go to school as well. Many girls wear tank tops, hoodies, and sweats often.

Being Canadian, denim on denim is like an old man outfit or a 2015 trend. You'll see people wear black denim jeans with a denim jacket still sometimes. I think culture is interesting in terms of what's trending vs what's now. In rural communities people still dress like it's 2012-2016 whereas in cities like Toronto, Ottawa or Montréal.

I want a part 2! There's so many trends online that are already "out of style" that I never saw in person: funky prints, oversized suites, waistcoats as tops..the list goes on and on

i'm a college student in a regular city (not NYC or LA) and while most people wear straight leg jeans or leggings with a hoodie or graphic tee, the unique outfits that i do see seem true to a person's style rather than being a mix of trendy items. as always this was an amazing video laini 💜i rely on your videos and pinterest as my only source on trends

As an alt person who lives in the middle of nowhere, it’s so weird to watch this because I’ve seen almost none of this, both IRL and online. I had no idea what you were talking about (save for the obvious ones, like corset tops, cargo pants/wide leg jeans, etc) until you showed a picture and then I had to do a double take. Interesting to see, but I’m just glad I’ve gotten used to dressing like I’m from a completely different world than everyone else. Little me used to be so insecure about dressing the way they did, but not caring about what people think has made me way more confident than ever. I just wish everyone thought that way, it’s so freeing to not care what’s trendy or “out of date”

I currently live in Europe, but I grew up in Colorado, and I have noticed that people in Europe are more focused on style and the online "fashionista" trends are something you can see people wearing on the street here. America, on the other hand, is more into practicality and I think athleasure still has a strong hold, so thats why online trend aren't usually that frequent irl

I think youre my favorite fashion influencer because you're from Detroit lol. I'm from right outside of Chicago and currently live in Wisconsin and it's so real that the trends just do not hit the midwest as hard as they do in NY or LA. Refreshing as hell to hear takes from someone who doesn't live in the "trendier" places. Your fashion advice seems more tailored towards the regular ol "quirky" girlie in a suburban midwestern town and it really resonates lol.

I have a couple of friends that are super into fashion (and super rich as well) and they dress up with the online trends all the time! It’s amazing! It’s like they just came out of Pinterest. It used to make me feel bad because I kinda like fashion but can’t afford some items but then I go to the real world and feel better about myself and that street affordable trends are cool as well ❤

The maxi skirts online are the slimline ones you showed, but irl in Australia big tiered maxi skirts and dresses are so in. Everyone's Xmas party pics are a sea of big brightly coloured maxi dresses. Probably because they're easier to move in and a bit more comfy as well as traditionally flattering

I love this video idea! It’s so easy to forget that internet trends don’t always translate to real life. Practicality always wins out. I totally agree with your take on dirty white sneakers. Also, I’m all about thrifting and even shopping my own closet for the trends that haven’t made it to stores yet!

Honestly on a daily basis I rarely see people wearing the "trendy" pieces, and when I do see people wear them I see the trends more than the people wearing them. The funny thing is I get compliments on how I dress a lot, but most things I wear are super "outdated" lol. My mom I would say is the most well-dressed person I've ever known, online or in person, but she simply has her own unique style and she cares very little about trends. Goes to show that you don't have to be trendy to be fashionable

This entire video is so true cause I get bored of the trends and seeing them online over and over but in person it’s a whole different thing. I’ve never seen people in person dress how people are online. No one I know and none of my friends even know what I’m talking about when it comes to fashion. It really takes like about 6 months to a year for everyone else to catch up and I live in LA in like a little suburb but still no one really dresses like that in person.

The thrift store tip is so true lol. Like you spend a little more time browsing the store bc its not preselected for you but you'll get such cute stuff :) another thing is dont ditch your moms or your grandparents clothes ive gotten so much wear out of the sweaters and leather jackets theyve gifted me lol

I love shackets! I feel like it’s super popular here in LA, where the weather is a lot more forgiving around this time, so you still have a fall/winter look but you’re also not completely roasting under a puffer or something 😂

I love the concept of this video as well as the message! I have to say that what you pointed out rings so true. The items that you find in the thrift store and have something unique to them really can outlast a trend cycle better than an item that everyone recognizes as "the thing of that year". I bought a vintage "moto" (with the flaps) leather jacket over 10 years ago and since it was unusually boxy (for the trend at the time), quite cropped, and I added some brooches to it, I have been able to have fun styling it throughout the years and it has aged better than the its asos counterparts that I was considering buying back then.

I live in Singapore. It’s very fashion trend aware. I see a lot of long dresses worn in the daytime lately. The sort of clothes you would normally only wear for an evening event. Super cool in the heat and very comfortable. Also Lulu Lemon etc worn outside the gym, like the whole look.

sambas are definitely cute but i grew up wearing them for futsal practice so i like can’t bring myself to find them wearable now 😂 i loved this video! it’s a nice reminder that there is kind of these two worlds of trends, especially when sometimes you don’t want to keep up w the fashion girlies and just wear something flattering/comfy it’s nice to remember that lots of other people do too!

yessss! literally the low rise and stuff becoming mainstream feels so weird because ive already been wearing it for three years now, and just now american eagle, aeropostale, etc are coming out with tthat for the mall girlies.

Living in Tokyo and it takes 1-2 years for the trends to hit the mainstream market here compared to Europe etc. And even when it does it’s pretty limited. Still, people are fashionable in their own way.

the trendiness of Adidas lately is so complicated for me. I owned gazelles ages before they were popular and I've always been more of an adidas person than nike, now with everything they make trending so hard and going on stockx for 7 the original amount, I feel like I'm being priced out of my go to shoes. As someone who doesn't necessarily follow trends exactly, and is probably too old to follow most of them, I do like being a little bit aware of them. Comfort is always #1 for me, always will be. But like the cargo pants trend - I'm so glad I knew to check for them in the men's section at the thrifts. The stretchy hiking type cargos have become my favorite work pants. I work at a public library and I'm always lifting and bending so being able to move around comfortably is important. The cargos are perfect plus they look so cute with a loose sweater and my Docs or AF1's. The AF1's are my favorite shoes for work too, very comfortable but sturdy with good support. And it's so cute when the younger patrons compliment my outfits at work! I'm told I look really young for my age, but I'm 54 so those compliments make me feel so good! 😂

i live in melbourne, australia and when i go to the city area i see many people dressed as the current “trends”. but i also see people dressed in older trends, practical clothes, different styles/aesthetics, comfortable clothes and basically anything. you can tell who buys into consumerism and who doesn’t care/has their own style. personally, im a teenager who buys into trends but i want to explore fashion more.

Thanks for this video!! Sometimes I feel pressured to keep up with the ever moving online trends.. but then I step outside. I live in the Austin area and yeah it’s completely different from online. Still see a lot of skinny jeans, the trendier people will wear baggy ripped light wash denim like you said, with white sneakers. Sometimes people wear mom jeans. The more alt-ish people wear docs but still casual. I’ve never anything remotely close to online fashion irl. It’s mostly either lounge wear or shorts and a tee, probably because it’s so hot all the time I do wish i could see more fun and creative looks but it’s also nice just being able to go out in leggings or something and be comfy. My go to outfit is a thrifted maxi skirt and oversized band tee

it’s also kinda crazy how the trends change depending on what part of the city you are in/ the type of people who are influencing the fashion among a group. if i go to a high school football game at the private schools around here, all the girls are in lululemon with the nike socks pulled over their leggings, but at the public high school it’s more cargo pants and wide leg jeans

Love denim jackets they're wardrobe staples for me. I feel like people in the online fashion community are often scared about denim on denim and wearing it "the right way" while in real life people usually don't care and look amazing!

My boyfriend wore sambas when we started dating 10 years ago and I wanted a pair so badly for casual wear back then. so it’s funny seeing that they’re like an it girl shoe, but soccer players have been wearing them for years.

Okay I work catering for really nice events in Chicago so I see the more black tie and formal trends. With formal women's wear it is those silky looking slip dresses with the tie string or cut out backs in a rainbow of colors and can be midi or mini and kitten heels that are very small and strappy. Women under thirty and teenagers wear these, older women go a little different and varied with suits and wear pants more, they also wear more high heeled boots but in a ankle length. People wear designer bags but nothing modern, they are all vintage chanel, Gucci or ysl. I have not seen a Louis Vuitton or very trendy bag and if they are they are a clutch that is not designer and are sparkly and very small. Other than that I see a lot of casual wear, leggings and hoodies but also just regular people in t shirts and jeans or just work clothes. A lot more crocs though, and for some reason tie dye sponge bob sweat shirts and t shirts, and cottage core style dresses and midi skirts from shein. Edit: also my most complimented items have been a cropped stranger things sweatshirt and my hot wheels sweater. None of my trendier items, just my comfy ones get the most compliments.

As a millennial fashion girly the moto jacket trend makes me cringe bc I used to wear mine in 2010 everyday and it was the epitome of that time. Any outfit- throw on the moto biker jacket. I remember feeling relieved when I finally donated mine. These should be super easy to thrift!

I’m a homebody so I honestly don’t go out and see people that often, and when I do I usually see the same people every time (I live in the south east of America in a churchy community), but I love seeing people wear anything out of the ordinary, even if it’s not actually trendy. Have thrifted a lot of these trends like the lululemon belt bag- there's hella cute fanny packs at thrift stores, even nice basic ones. Great place for trendy footwear as well- stuff lots of people wear once and then discard/get tired of that's almost new, but you're not buying it from a fast fashion place

There are plenty of good dupes for the melina leather trousers including glassons where they are a fraction of the price - they are such a chic yet surprisingly comfy alternative to jeans 💖👌 I used to love wearing heels on a night out & of course they look nicer, but ive really enjoyed transitioning to sneakers with a dressier outfit to tone it down a bit & also so I can get around town easier 😝

That's interesting with the leather jackets. When Sears Canada closed a few years back, I got a grey faux leather moto jacket with a zipper that's off to one side, and it has so many versatile options! I don't personally support real leather unless it's thrifted, so it was refreshing to see a nice quality faux leather that wasn't too expensive, but will still last for more years to come. Although I don't really follow trends at all, I do my own style of more androgynous clothing, often incorporating things I design and sew myself.

So true , online people keep talking about how baggy jeans have completely gotten away, and nobody wears them anymore and although there's definitely less people who wear skinny jeans than before. There are still lots of people who never stopped wearing them, and ironically some people are already talking about how skinny jeans might be making a come back as if they had truly disappeared, and I'm not even talking about people wearing them because they have this specific aesthetic, just wearing them as casually as any other pair of pants. (Omg edit I wrote my comment wrong I meant this about skinny jeans😅 but whatever)
