looks to me like strider better start making a better knife if he's going to charge 5 times the cost of the fake... all I care about is fit and function and the things you show are petty at best....
Cain Knives too bad your mother wasn’t pro choice, you don’t use a knife as a tool you collect...you should stick to beanie babies and stamps fuck boy.
I've got a Strider SNG clone. I bought it in the full knowledge that it was a clone and it was advertised as a clone. Here in the UK a real SNG is £587.95 ($781.09). My clone cost me £35.00 ($46.50) and is fantastic. If genuine Striders were nearer £250-£300 I wouldn't hesitate to purchase, but I've got Cold Steels that will do everything that Strider will do at a tenth of the price. I love my Strider clone (even the blade steel holds up against my S30v PM2) and if I come accross an SMF clone for a similar price, I'll bite the seller's hand off..!!!!
These fake striders too me honestly seem like they Kick ass for 80$. Even if the steel is some 440 variant and not d2 they are still a killer deal. Mine should be here tomorrow and I'll do a comparison video against my real smf. Thanks for the vid. I'm excited about my fake now.
A lot of the items he pointed out as different are actually things that changed on new Striders. The beveled lock bar and logo, blade steel on blade, etc.
Great work bro, i have huge respect for you and your work. My thing and there might be others out there same reason, i would love to have a real Strider or serveral real Striders, but i have two kids one with special needs, and just cant, but i have seen some really nice clones for less that $35 so for me i would atleast like to have one that might be a decent blade and atleast have one that looks close to the real thing, prob the closest i will ever be to owning anything that say Strider on it. Is it wrong yeah i dont think that should clone them and put someone else brand on it but hey what can you do. It happens...
Excellent video. I was admittedly very tempted to get a fake as there's no way I am getting the real deal. However, watching this has turned me off the copy. Seeing how it's really constructed and the materials used by someone who is obviously very familiar with knife construction is very helpful. I bet Mick appreciated it too. I think if I really want a hard use knife that is more affordable,I'll stick with ZT, Spyderco,Benchmade etc. I love my 560 ZT.
I got 3 of those fakes, and have to say that work just fine,,,I have 2 Tops knives which both failed on me (tip of the knife broke), 1 extrema ratio folder which turned very loose like after 1 month....(ok, not a big deal, but for the price)... and talking about the shitty steel and the shitty titanium, it works just fine, 20 years ago we only had wooden handles and it also worked fine !!!? i agree that sometimes they are little details that could have been worked out better (like the screws), but for the rest those knives are top quality compare to some other 250$ folders.... I lived about 10 years in Shanghai and noticed 1 thing, 1 big thing !!!!! if you're gonna pay 500$ for something you gonna think it's top notch, if you're gonna pay 50$ you gonna think it's crap,,,,!!! meanwhile it has been produced (sometimes, not the striders) in the same factory....trust me, i saw this a lot having been selling many goods from china....So i just raised the price of my goods just to make people happy.... Just admit that those are good knives for 400 chinese RMB !!! the only bad thing about all this is maybe that people getting de-incouraged to making new things...yes it's true, i agree... Maybe they should start making them own brand of knives... OK sorry for my bad english...
Thanks for doing this review and commenting TT. I admit, I purchase clones, but for one reason only, as a 'try before I buy'. Even though they are not an exact replica in size and quality, it gives me a good idea of ergonomics and feel so I can decide if I want to spend the top dollar ($300-$700 or more for custom) for the authentic. I have purchased some higher end pieces in the past that I just don't like when in hand and spent good money for something I will give away or never use. I dont care to support knock offs (I dont buy any pieces that try to pass off as the real thing, only the 'like' or 'similar to' truthful builders/sellers, but for $20-$50 they do provide a small piece of mind before shelling out my hard earned dollar for something I may not like. Absolutely, I do prefer to support local craftsman as I am one myself but also care about value for money and use. Cheers.
Very informative and interesting! Like buying any high end product there will always be dishonest people trying to rip you off. You have to do your research and buy from a source you trust. Sometimes I find it's better to walk away if the deal does not seem 100%. I adore my knives and spend a lot on them, but I can't afford to throw money away on fake crap. Any info like that, please keep it coming as the only way to stop these 'fakes' is to educate people to stop buying them!! Cheers.....
The pocket clip was titanium also you just almost melted it taking it to 1400+ degrees that thin its diffinitly ruined now its hardness and the ability to retain shape is gone
Chinese Strider is better than my real Strider, after months of abuse and knocking the shit out of it, it still locks up tight with no blade play, my Real Strider has had pivot and blade play problems after 3 months, bought 5 of these thinking I might need them still on first one and it lasted after what I put it through the other 4 will live in safe, as for me giving my money to the Chinese I do not think it is any worse than giving to a felon, and I am getting 4 for the price of one.
Thanks for the vid bro really enjoy your vids an pimp work brother keep up the good work an that was cool of chosen7x7 for lettin u do that so thanks chosen7x7 to
Not everybody has 500 bucks to spend on a knife and I'm sorry but there is no way it's costing that much to produce a Strider and other than the name on the clones which I do think is wrong for the money a clone is not a bad knife. Clones are never going to hurt a company that much if any because the people that buy these knives are never going to buy a real one for they're own reasons. I'm sure strider is making plenty of money everybody seems to have them clones are never going to hurt them. People that want real striders buy real ones and people that want a strider but don't want to pay 500 hundred dollars for one buy clones !!!
I don't think you realize quality and precision machining costs. THAT is where your money is going. Along with tight tolerances and a fantastic warranty.
Oh, and the logo differences aren't reliable indicators either, there are variations on real striders too. The blade base looks like a good easy identifier though, and its visible with the knife closed, great job ID'ing that!
The best giveaway so far is the g10. All the fakes ive seen have really crappy g10, look at the one in jdavis882s vid. Both of mine have the really agressive kind. And the striping on the blades and the ti (if the fake even is ti, xiuxiu1313 suggested it may be aluminum since it wears out so quick) is different on some. The tiger stripes look painted on, and the flaming is looser like the older kind, but sloppier.
Thanks for doing this video! I had some doubts in the back of my mind, but I'm completely sure I've got a real one now! It's so disappointing to see such higher end knives like CRK and Hinderers starting to get copied now too.
I know this is an old video, but the comment is still true. What's the point of doing a side by side (fake vs. real) and making comments like "the real one is fatter" or "the G10 on the real one is grippier" as if someone trying to buy one is going to have one already in their pocket to lay down for the comparison. Tell us what we can detect WITHOUT having a known real one as the benchmark, then you've really told us something useful.
Kinda knew which was the fake just by sight. On the fake, the blade grind is way off, If its not a full flat ground then the hollow grind shouldn't go that far up. On my M4 the hollow grind leaves a thicker swedge of steel, by this I mean it isn't ground up past the hole, which in the fake it is.
The thumb stud on the fake ones is made out of 2 different pieces joint in the middle...i know because one of them broke on mine. The hole is actually smaller then the studs too. The 2 pieces are screwed into each other through the hole. I got what i payed for !
@djSpinege Well suing someone over making something that looks similar to something you make it not necessarily a straightforward matter. The various features of Strider designs may or may not be protected by patent, trademark, trade dress etc The main thing though is that most of the fakes like this come out of China. Suing people in an entirely different country is even more work than suing someone normally.
My strider sng has an emblem with lines in the feathers and also detail on the blade.... I bought it from true north knives ... my hinder stop disk also looks like a ufo...its identical to the one on the fake one .
Great video! Love the fire test :P There are plenty of good knives on the market for $80 bucks. Knives that will work. I'd rather buy any of those. Part of buying a Strider is the mystique and the bulletproof warranty. You don't get that with these. Think I'd just go with a cold steel if I wanted an inexpensive hard use blade.
TUFF, here is the specs on the fake: Length: 22.5 CM Folding length: 12.8cm Handle length:12.8cm Blade length: 10CM Blade thickness: 0.48CM Blade Steel: D2 Blade surface: stonewashed Handle: TC4+G10 Hardness:59-61HRC ..........you should see his sabenzas
Hey Geoff you can't go by the flying penis logo. I have 2 real ones and they both look different. They also one has more detail in the feathers than the other amoung other things.
Be careful with that statement. A lot of knife companies make knives for the US military. I personally see the Benchmade AFO and the Gerber 06 issued to many of the folks I am out with. I do like Striders and believe they do fit that nice nitch of tankish folders, but don't buy them soley on the heresay that they are a "military" knife.
Comparing sizes or quality of certain components doesn't really work because unfortunately there are tons of different companies making the clones and all of them couldn't possibly be exactly the same. Plus I've seen many videos of supposed real Striders which had several differences from each other
I have a fake SNG that is even closer looking to the real deal than the one you have. The contact surface on the tang of the blade is the same as a real blade, the G10 spacer is full length and has the bump for the notch of the blade to rest on, the inserts that the screws fasten into don't pop out, the top of the blade and the liners have the same amount of jimping, the cut in is the same on the locking mechanism, and like the one you showed above, it has Strider stamp on one side of the blade. The big indicator that it is a fake is the fact that the G10 side has the Gunner Grip pattern, but the liner is plain, where on my real SNG, it has the Gunner Grip pattern on both sides. Other than that, the only other indicators that it is a fake are that it has two thin bushings on each side of the blade, as opposed to one thicker bushing on each side, and the emblem on the base of the blade is slightly different (no detail on the handle of the printed knife, but the feathers are detailed).
the companies so far as i can tell don't care about the Chinese companies .its the people that threw so much money down on a knife that should be $ 50.00 -$100.00 at most . i bet they think the Chinese are free advertising .like anti smokers are for tobacco companies .every time the anti smoking commercial comes on more people light up .
just because 1 clone doesnt have titanium doesnt mean they all dont. Thats like saying because my toyota 4 runner is green that people dont own a black one. Clones come in all shapes sizes and qualities. And it has been proven that many of these clones do in fact use the materials they claim to use.
Fred Fleurant I do neither. I do acquire them for study purposes and to learn about them. I then will make some videos about them. I don't like counterfeiting. But I realize it is a part of our world and to help combat it you have to understand it. And to understand it you have to familiarize yourself with it and study it. I would much prefer china not replicate company logos. That really does bother me. But I am not going to pass on the opportunity to examine something because it uses a manufacturer mark falsely. So while I don't have any profit or benefit to my position I think those who have experience with these knives are in a better position to speak about them. Not that you don't have a right to your opinion. But when you consider that many clone manufacturers also have legitimate operations which are funded by the production of clones the materials used will be utilized in both lines.
The fake looks just as good as the real one. And this was 8 years ago. My clone strider is even better. Blade made from com s35vn, full titanium handle, machining is flawless, better than the real Strider I use to own, and best part it's 8 times cheaper. It's not Chinese who are ripping people off, it's these American companies that charge insane amount of money for a knife($500-$1000) that costs them less than 20 dollars to produce while they pay 15 cents an hour to some Chinese kid to make their knives n China. By the way where do you think we get our titanium from. Yea China, the largest manufacturer of titanium in the world, followed by Russia. So it's the same titanium 6al 4v, or Tc4 what the Chinese call it. Oh and that's not how u anodize titanium. You use electric current, while the titanium piece is submerged in water solution of sodium/baking soda. The amount of current u pass will dictate the color you get. Hitting any piece of titanium or steel with a torch you actually weaken the metal structure by making it soft prone to scratching and deformation. That's why you never hand your knives to a "friend" when they have no idea what they are doing.
thx chosen. that was awesome when you torched the frame on the fake one. i just had to know. its like they mixed titanium chunks with steel. is it magnetic?
If only these illicit manufacturer's had named the products BURGER and avoided STRIDER trademarks...I think I would buy one out of spite, given the court cases on Mickey Burger. Not the cheap clone...but a nice one with Ti and D2.
fakes blow my mind. this might be a stupid question, but. why doesn't Strider track down where these things are coming from exactly and sue the living shit out of em.
I was really worried for a second bladehq sent me a fake somehow, cause the new ones are very consistant with the fake in jdavis882s vid. But the fact a dealer sent it to me makes it next to impossible its a fake. Plus the finishes are accurate, and mine holds an edge very well, doubt the chinese one would. So the logo is different on new striders than the one you have, and they have smaller thumbholes.
flame anodizing is addictive.....i have to control myself or else all my Taichung Spydercos with Ti locksides would be bronze purple and blue.....i'm thinking about it right now....
the clip is stainless steel the scale is titanium you can get a 440 c or d2 blade i can give you a website to check out if you want to see the website pm me
Well if you ask me, the real stryder will be a valued collector's item. I will buy the fake one so I could torture it with everyday use (I will never ruin a good and original knife)
