I’m 72 and refuse to wear old lady clothes! I don’t wear clothes for teens either. I like to wear what makes me feel sophisticated and youthful. You have a great figure and should wear what makes you happy.

Well said.... just because it fits, doesn't mean it looks good, I know people believe they can wear what they want, but short-shorts and mini skirts on wrinkly hanging saggy arse cheeks, really is not a good look!! That doesn't mean you have to wear everything at your ankles... but nobody wants so see some things!!!

Ageism is real... my aunt was very sick..they saw 82 on her form and thought 'dementia' I had to sit up the hospital and fight with doctors telling them "this is Not Her!! Something is wrong!!!" Finally they worked out her medication was wrong, it had messed up the balance in her blood and gave her confusion!! Once they stopped writing her off as 'old lady' and treated her properly, she came good, is like her old self (more like 50 than 80!!) Bright, lively, quick-witted.... clothes are Nothing when you compare it to real ageism!!!!

I do agree with most of it. Wear what you want and makes you feel good no matter your age. It’s just doesn’t mean it’ll look good. I do think trying to dress for trends that are associated with a much younger age looks very weird and embarrassing for that older person.

This is where weight lifting, and eating protein should enter the chat. Women need to lift weights. It helps keep our metabolism churning along. It helps sustain (and even increase) bone density. It (obviously) helps shape our bodies. It helps self-esteem, confidence, mental strength, and so much more. I am 41 and been weight lifting for years. Our changing bodies don't have to be the excuse to stop wearing clothes we want. Yes, it takes work and nutrition needs to be in check. But it is not impossible. Lift weights. Eat protein: 0 8-1g/pound of body weight. Also eat carbs, they are not the enemy. Hopefully that didn't come off as preachy. Even if it did, I am so passionate about women lifting weights. It's NOT a boy's club and the benefits far exceed just the physical. ❤

Here is where we have to find the confidence to take an example of a style and tweak it to our own individual needs. I am 66- not as tight bodied as I would like.. wrinkles.. etc.. but I can take an idea, be inspired by someone like Risa and pull something similar together emphasizing my own best features .. we ALL can do that if we allow ourselves to have the confidence ( that not being represented in the industry has taken from us) to just do US the best that we can without worrying what others think is "appropriate or age appropriate " !

Kudos to you for calling out these brands. We may have different styles, but still have the same problem of being ignored by these clothing brands. They all seem to forget that women in their 40s, 50s, 60s have more disposable income to spend on clothing than women in their 20s and 30s.

Hear! Hear Risa!!! Well said and thank you for being so honest and transparent! Women of our age are underrepresented in the fashion world. And I compare this issue to the issue of full-figured women who are underrepresented in fashion as well. As with the beauty industry, some progress has been made with full-figured women being shown more in clothing campaigns and runways in recent years, but more improvement is definitely needed. And much more improvement is needed in the issue you speak of in this awesome video! If more and more women of our age speak out and speak up, we will be heard! But it will take time and patience and perseverance. And people like you, who have a loud and honest and clear voice and are in a position that allows them to reach hundreds of thousands of people at a time. So please continue doing what you are doing, please continue representing us and all women over 50! We need more people like you in this world if we're to make any progress. Thank you! 👏🏼👏🏼😍

I’m 65 and still love to dress up for special occasions and dress fashionably for day to day wear. Yes, I am willing to pay more for quality and to feel good in my clothes. It makes me crazy when I see a video that tells me what is “out.” Often, these seem to target over 40/50 women who, they say, “should not” be wearing x, y, or z. Women at any age should wear what makes them feel great. Things that make them feel pretty or special. There is nothing more attractive than a woman that feels attractive. I think it is, though, ageism that will cause a woman to have a confidence crisis and NOT wear the clothes she wants. I genuinely LOVE your style. As a devotee of “boho,” I celebrate your look. Of course, there are endless videos telling me that I must abandon my bell sleeves. Yeah. I’ll get right on that… Love and blessings to you, friend. You are a beautiful inspiration. ❤️

Thank you Risa for standing up and saying the ugly word outloud...AGEISM, directed at women. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE with everything you said in this video. I also have your style in clothing and am also finding places to buy clothes more and more difficult as I age. I can attest that even women in their 60's want to feel feminine and sexy. I used to buy clothes online at Venus but left due to the customer service and some of their ever changing shipping /return policies that they forget to publish and the customer doesn't find out about the "new" policy until they want to return something etc. Just wanted to add my 2 cents and thank you again for this video. One big thing I noticed is that for the chain stores, they stopped carrying sizes over 12 in their physical stores. When I started gaining weight and went over size 12, I found there was never my size in store that I could try on. This goes for bra sizes, too. I'm mainly referring to Express and Victorias Secret since that's where I shopped the most. I'm glad they do have "larger sizes" available, but I feel degraded and ashamed that I'm forced to order my sizes online, because the brick and mortar stores choose to not carry all their sizes in-store.

AMEN Risa ... I am a 'young' 54yr old .. I am sick and tired of NOT seeing my age-group in ads for, say, BooHoo or H&M, stores that I shop at all the time .. The so-called 'high-end' looks for 'older ladies' (and I 100% HATE that term) are always waaaay overpriced and I wouldn't have worn them even if i had lived in the 1800s. We are the women, who never feature in advertising, that love fashion and (hopefully) have the disposable income to shop at the major fashion retailers, so why our age-demographic never features in advertising is beyond me!! Loved this Risa .. you are INCREDIBLE!! XXX I also love shopping at Mango, Zara, and Bershka but I have NEVER seen a woman over 25 in any of their ads. And here in Ireland the only fashion ads that feature women in my age-range are M&S, Next or Plus-Size clothing retailers. Apart from Next, most retailers who feature women my age in their adverts stock, what I would call, 'matronly' clothes. It is infuriating xxx

This is such a relevant conversation. For me I probably see the most negativity on Facebook towards middle plus aged women’s fashion and it’s so disheartening to see it’s women charging and fueling it. I think as a demographic women over 40 are ignored and disregarded and for other women to not be more supportive or inclusive is baffling. We are all (hopefully) going to get older one day, let’s have some compassion and enthusiasm for enjoying life regardless of the stage. I’ve never felt more invisible than after turning 40. It’s kind of a bummer. Thank you for opening up the conversation around this topic.

I find myself looking up just about everything you wear in your videos, makeup, and fashion videos. Love that you list where to find your top and jewelry in your videos. I m in my 50s as well and receive so many compliments on my style overall. I dress for me, not for other opinion of course and I wear what makes me feel good. Keep doing what you do, Risa ❤😊😊

Hi Risa! I love your channel because you are so real and relate to you so much. I’m 51 and also love all things glam. I live in Canada so I shop a lot at Aritzia and sometimes Dynamite (a little lower quality). I think you can shop online from the US. Thank you for talking about this topic. I’ve been noticing lately that the topic of menopause is being discussed everywhere and this makes me think that people are waking up to the fact that middle aged women are sick of being pushed to the sidelines. Brands need to wake up and represent women of all ages if they want customers!

Way to go on calling out Venus! Completely agree about the lack of options. I’m 48 and plus size, so i feel like I have very few, especially that are affordable. Right now I get most of my clothes from Torrid but they can be really hit or miss when it comes to having something I consider my style, which is casual boho/whimsigoth/sometimes witchy. The Target plus size section where I live is smaller than a shoebox 😂 it’s like as you get older companies expect you to fit into this set of clothing rules that they think older people have to wear. And if you’re plus size, you have to be in an even smaller box/set of rules.

I applaud you for bringing this to the table. At 54 I have my own sense of style. I no longer purchase clothing from stores I loved in the past when I see that the models barely crack the 20 something age bracket. We're the demographic who buy things we appreciate. Either changes need or we will go elsewhere. Thanks Risa for encouraging us to be vocal about the lack of representation in the fashion industry.

I want to be an inspiration for young adults. I'm not trying to look 20 but I am still wanting to feel good in my southbound skin with fashions that meet my mindset. I think you have, without realizing it, stumbled on a business opportunity to explore. Doesn't have to be your own brand, but work with designers to design for us. Thank you for your honesty and you're a breath of fresh air. xo

There are lots of influencers who will promote anything to get the $. And all the stores you mentioned I also can’t find clothes at (I did find an emergency black dress for my father’s funeral at Chico’s, does that count?) even though I dress very differently from you. And I once bought a great pair of shorts at Walmart in some state when we were on vacation and I spilled something on myself. But I totally hear you!! Keep doing what you do!! Hi Risa, You nailed the subject. I turned 55 this year and have lost almost 50 lbs. now that I’m ready to shop for a new wardrobe I have no where to go. All the stores I used to shop at no longer carry styles that appeal to me. I’m stuck wearing my old clothes that are too baggy and frumpy! I’m not sure where to go to anymore! Nothing is ever in stock at the stores I try to shop at or they don’t have my size! It really is frustrating! Thank you for taking the time to shed more light on this issue! Thanks Risa, awesome perspective! I agree with you 100%. My problem is slightly different in that yes, I’m 40 pounds overweight, but it doesn’t mean I want to dress like what they put out there for not only women my age 65, but also my size. I can’t tell you how many times I go into the “regular size” department and see a shirt that would be perfect on me, but they just don’t make it in my size. It’s not that a little bit larger person couldn’t wear that style. They just don’t make it. Very frustrating.! All those stores you mentioned to be honest. none of them are my style either, but I do know you can usually find pieces that you would probably like in most of them.

I prefer not to show too much skin and I DO like Ann Taylor, but I watched your video all the way to the end because I really like your channel and I think you made a lot of valid points. Stores need to stop putting women in boxes as to what we can or cannot wear at any age. I think if more consumers say something about this, stores will listen. Funnily enough, this is also a problem with children's clothes. My son is 10 years old and he is very sweet, very creative. He loves color and is not attracted to many of the options that you find for boys clothing. It's a lot of dinosaurs on skateboards with game controllers and themed characters eating pizza and rude sayings like, "Come back later, Mom. I'm gaming." A few years ago we were at the Carter's store and my son literally asked me why the girls side of the store was so much more fun. It was all colors and positive messaging over there whereas it was all kind of snarky, sporty, gamer vibes on the boys side. I think the struggle to find clothing that fits our personality is very real and I think it affects more ages than we think. It's definitely the worst for women, who are not cookie cutters and have our own personalities. Just an interesting thing to think about how it can be a struggle in other segments of the market, too. As consumers we should definitely ask for more variety and for more inclusion of ages and shapes and sizes.

Well said! so glad you did this video. I believe there are so many women out there who really needed to hear this. I bet that you would be very successful if you started your own clothing brand! for now, we should start communicating with a lot of different brands to ask for representation etc. after all, women over a certain age are well established financially and are the ones who are purchasing the clothes as opposed to the infants they are using as models. The whole system is broken and needs to be repaired.

Yes!!! Rissa you nailed it right on the head! I'll be 60 this year (hard to believe 😅) and I shop the junior departments and other places to find clothing that I feel my best in. I wouldn't be caught ever wearing polyester pants with elastic waist or a number of other pieces I see women my age wearing. I love your videos of your clothing pieces! I live in Michigan (very small town) and don't have the opportunity to wear gorgeous dresses or outfits that I would if I could. But you do inspire me, and I try to find something that fits my lifestyle. I also have experienced the ageism when it comes to the way I wear my makeup. Also I adjust my age for the subscription makeup that I enjoy. If I say my current age I receive mostly skincare and lipsticks 🫤. That's not exactly what I signed up for. There are a few women that I follow that I enjoy watching for style content. Anna Reid's channel and Samantha Shuerman is a couple. I also follow Michele Wang. I’m in the UK so I’m not familiar with the stores you mention BUT as a woman about to turn 50 I completely identify with your frustrations regarding the fashion industry and their complete disregard towards women in our demographic. I have always loved and invested in fashion and it’s a sad fact that I’m struggling to feel represented in that domain when I feel at a time in my life where I feel more confident in my self expression. Don’t get me wrong, my body has changed but my then so has my mindset and I now feel way more at ease when I look in the mirror than I was in my 20’s when I carried way fewer pounds and lines! We do need to put more pressure on the industry to make a positive change. Thank you for speaking out xxx

The main reason I eatch your channel is you do not make a big deal about any specific brand. For me you give ideas and tips that work for specific types. It is overwhelming sometimes shifting through reviews and brands. I don't work in your field. For example your tips on products for hooded eyes, wrinkles, and oil skin, plus the instructions on how to was great! I like the fashion you show and what works is good. Again to me you don't over do the brand you show what works for your style and body type. We as a female are not that different 😊 Thank you for what you do. I was influenced to buy the colourful, knitted, bathing suit coverup that you featured in one of your videos. I bought in August and I couldn’t believe the amount of compliments and looks I got from people every time I wore it. I had a lot of girls in their 20’s approach me, wanting to know where I bought it. When I told them Venus swimwear, NONE of them had ever heard of it. I started ordering from them in the 90’s, so it is very disheartening to hear how they are treating us older women, that have supported them for decades. Thanks again for bringing awareness to this issue and I LOVE your sweater today.

Risa: you are exceptionally beautiful inside and out. You always encourage viewers, friends anyone in your life to wear what makes them happy no matter their age or their size. I think you are a perfect Venus representative and I'm sorry they are becoming what they are becoming. Not everyone looks as beautiful as you at 50 but it's a joy to see and draw inspiration from. Thank you for being you and all that you do. 💖

I have followed you for YEARS!! What you have said is 100% on point. Our age is under represented in society and yet we have the biggest buying power as we are in our prime earning years. I absolutely love your style and while my lifestyle is different to yours, there have been plenty of times I've looked to you for inspiration, especially my after 5, special events or date nights when I want to feel sexxxy. Keep doing what you're doing.

Risa, this is an important conversation. Keep it up. Maybe do a shop my closet where you talk through where you have purchased things and why or even what frustrated you? Or maybe when you buy things or find things, just add that to your makeup video. Like a bonus at the end.
