Thank you Beth! I have not made a video for the tapered version of a signet ring yet, but I do have it on my list of “to-do” videos. And 2023 will have lots of new tutorials! I’m settled into the new place and it’s time to get back on the horse and film so stay tuned.
In this demo I am using copper solder purchased from Rio Grande, but normally I would use regular silver solder and then disguise it by plating it with copper from my pickle pot. 😃
Love it thanks! I thought I needed to quench and clean before second round of solder bec of firescale? But it seems fine? What if you need more soldering quench and clean than or just keep adding?
Definitely quench and pickle to get the best joins. Copper is much more forgiving than silver so if you can get into the habit of cleaning between solder operations, you’ll have a lot less frustration! 🙂

I use a specific formula that works for me every time. Measure the thickness of the metal in mm. Find out the diameter of a size 9 ring (should be around 18.9 or so mm). If you have a size 9 ring already somewhere, use your calipers to get the inside diameter. Then add the thickness to the diameter times pi (3.14) and that should give you the length you need to make a size 9. If the ring is wider than 4mm, you'll want to add 0.5mm to the total length of the blank to get the right size for the width. Also, I would recommend not going thinner than a 18g for a men's ring if you have it. It will hold up longer and will be less likely to break. Especially if this is the ring you plan to put the diamond in. Hope this helps!
