I agree with Russell Simmons pertaining to prison reform. Running prisons for profit is unethical and immoral. Because prisons are profit based the people in charge depend on recidivism. There's absolutely no emphasis on treatment or rehabilitation. Over 1/3 of prisoners are non violent drug offenders, and many of them have no previous criminal history. It is easy for society to forget about or not care about these people in prison (out of sight out of mind) but these prisoners are human beings who deserve to be treated fairly and humanly. As a society we should be judged on how we treat those on the lowest rungs of society.....and as of now we are doing a poor job of that. Treatment is ALWAYS more effective than punishment!

this may sound pathetic, but after i had a kickass junior year and got amzing grades, and looking forward to graduating highschool, going into engineering school and just learning in general, my ex came back to me and hurt me again. i became depressed and nothing mattered to me any more. but after 3 weeks of watching bill maher, i got out of my depression and once again was excited for college. thanks bill, ur humor helped me get my priorities straight and realize what is truly important

First off, I think every congressman should get a significant pay cut and take away their health insurance. Why do they get great health insurance when the majority of Americans don't even have insurance? Second, I can't stand how politicians play the blame game. I don't want excuses, I want solutions and results.

"We all need to make sacrifices" Do we? Millions of Americans lost their homes and jobs while the top 400 richest people in America only got richer... yet we, as a nation, need to make sacrifices? The rich and the corporations get continued tax cuts, yet the tax burden continues to rest on the lowest income families... yet we, as a nation, need to make sacrifices? I think some people have already made sacrifices. "And when you ask them, 'How much should I give?'" They answer more more more!

@J5MARLON Very good question J5Marlon. This is the most important question of all I believe. There is a discussion in this country about turning "communistic", which is a legitimate concern but the idea that communism is the only threat is naive.

@factvfiction I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm from Scotland - moved to the US 10 years ago - and don't regret it one bit, I love it here. However, the US could learn a lot from Australia, the UK and even Canada as far as taking care of our sick and elderly - regardless of their insurance or financial situation. You pay a bit more in taxes, but you wont go bankrupt or lose everything you worked hard for because of a medical bill.

Why not like UK in late 1700's sending prison population to overseas? They were sending them to Australia. We can send white and hispanic prison population to Afghanistan and black population to Liberia. They would get there land and cattle for free and would live there for the rest of their life living from land and cattle. Isn't that great idea?

I hate the words islamaphobia and homophobia. A phobia is defined as a type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding. Prejudice against or just genuine dislike of a certain group is NOT a fucking phobia!

@CWhit555 And where exactly do you think those millions of dollars go? Last time I checked we still haven't outsourced our prison system to China or India. Building, supplying, running, and even filling the prisons makes quite a lot of money for the companies and groups performing the work, and those companies are based in America. Their profit margins also tend to be quite large.

@MTVVH1sucks "living beyond are means for the last 30 years?" Yes, those things are true but there is some truth to that statement. When the housing bubble was growing, not everyone could afford to live in a $250,000 house, yet the loans were there and they took them. We could argue semantics over predatory loans, but ther fact of the matter is there is blame to go around for all. I do wholly agree that much of the problems in our country today were caused by banks,wall street, and bad policy.

The problem with Republicans is that they think the average American are fairly wealthy and making 6 figure salary a year. In reality the average middle class make less than 75,000 a year in general. "Get a job and get health insurance" I am sorry many Americans are working 2-3 jobs and still can't afford health insurance. The premiums are too high and if you actually did go see a doctor assuming your are covered and not rejected, you can always expect they change your rates for profit.

@factvfiction Agreed! I mean, I might not like Australia 100% (but I certainly do like it here). We of course can improve a hell of a lot, but I would rather be here rather than what goes on over in the US. We've moved passed evolution, sex education and religion being the focus of our elections!

@factvfiction I was saying this just today. I may dislike our centrist government and wish it were more left but I love that we don't have a party dedicated to bullshit such as the ten commandments and the banishment of teaching evolution in schools, we can support a mixed economy and without being branded "Socialist", we actually have a middle class, we don't fear for our lives when we break down in a town we are unfamiliar with and we don't cut taxes on the rich.

My good friend went to jail for 2 1/2 years for selling ecstasy. By the time he actually *went* to jail, as a sentence, he'd been clean for quite awhile and following the 12 step program and attending AA meetings. He had very good behavior in jail, is a really calm guy. By the time he got out, he'd made friends with a Blood who had written down on a piece of paper all the things that Bloods were required to know and follow. Ridiculous how they would put violent gang members in with ppl like that

thats because we know mexico is corrupt so we're a bit more accepting of the violence. although I would say the past 2 years have seen a rapid supreme increase in violence, and bombs than before. It was always been known that there was a possibility that if you went into mexico, you shouldn't be shocked if a police officer pulled you over and asked for cash, nicely. as carrie would say, what are you going to do, you can't fight city hall.

@slickbtk I actually completely agree with you. 100%. But what I look at is what can actually be accomplished with the real power they have. As I'm sure you know, they don't really have true power. The banking industries and corporate interests decide what happens in this country. But the Obama administration have done A LOT of things to improve where we are. Your previous comments were not indicative of your real opinions, that's why I commented the way I did.

@tarantulatook No it's not. Only uneducated people use incorrect terms and demand respect for their opinions. A phobia is NOT disliking something. It's the irrational fear of something. Patients with phobias are treated by psychologists. Not yelled at by people for being afraid of trees. The term islamophobia was created to silence people.

@psychokillercrab Cheers. Money is the new religion. Pretty much all of the wars, murder, corruption etc is done in the name of money. We are all born into a system of monetary confinement, the same way as we are all born into a religious confinement, both are corrupt and both will fail in the end. We can pick and choose our religions but not one human in the world (apart from the few wild tribes in the jungles etc) can live without money. Just look at what people do for some fancy paper!

Yes from what I can tell (because you are not marx,soci,commu, but are very sensitive about them) from your mysterious form of economics, no person has the right to capital? In my opinion any form of economics, in practice not THEORY, limits freedoms. How does it not? If the state decides, in any way fiscal, to intervene someone will be limitted. You will argue that they should intervene to stop GREED, I would argue that the state is the GREED.

@blackcreekghost because when you are able to allow yourself to laugh and see the "funny" in things, you can think "rationally". the others are so hell bent on being "serious" and "heard" and "right" and down right greedy, they dont find time to laugh and besides, maybe they know they are greedy hateful criminals and that there IS nothing to laugh about in THEIR case. it all boils down to dont take life so serious as crying and anger wont fix anything period.

I'm actually german and the political discourse here is far more advanced and has so many more layers. these are clowns, discuss Foucault, discuss Adorno, discuss the great thinkers, the theories of people who were so much smarter and wiser than you, built and raise foundation on the ground of explicit knowledge, not your opinion. THINK. Compare numbers, statistics, use sociology, use ingenuity, discuss different approaches of different economical systems. Not all this bull.

@butchbutch66 AGAIN, you are missing the point. Being gay myself I have used such terms before, However when they are used in a derogatory way they can be seriously offensive. I'm sorry if feel somehow harmed or intimidated - "bully" - by me simply because I questioned you on an offensive remark. @lifeseeker1 Yes Stockman is one of the few republicans that makes sense. He actually is kinda liberal about guns but gun control in some countries is a conservative view like in Britain. too bad the republican party was hijacked by the Christian Right crazies or Tea Party nutjobs. Every1 brings up the ghost of Reagan but he would be too moderate for todays party. To bad Reagan did not appear to listen to him about the economy though.
