Hi Yannick, Came here from your squarespace post. Thank you for doing the testing. Have you gone back to your local camera shop to check out their 58mm Hoya HD filters? Do their 58mm Hoya HD filters have the same finishing as your 52mm Hoya HD protector? I am asking because I bought two Hoya HD UV filters with two distinct looks from a camera shop in 2015, one 52mm Hoya HD UV filter and the other 77mm Hoya HD UV filter. The 52mm one I bought looks exactly like your 52mm HD protector, with a glossy finish and a chamfered edge. However, the 77mm HD filter I bought from the exact same store shares the same look as the one you ordered online, the 58mm HD protector which you think is counterfeit, a matte finish and no chamfered edge. I have had dirt and sand splashed onto the 77mm filter once, and cleaned it off with relative ease. I also once had a kid who smeared food onto the 52mm in a shoot, and I cleaned it off easily with a tissue. Couldn’t tell if the 77mm was harder to clean because I didn’t suspect it to be counterfeit. I didn’t compare. Is it likely that Hoya HD filters might have two different looks, and both happen to be genuine ones? Really hope somebody from Hoya can clarify. Anyways, thank you for your post.
First one is fake and second is real. I will not buy both. I won't put cheap glass or plastic in front of high quality expensive lens even if made by hoya unless the intention was CPL, diffusion or star effect types where I can tolerate the reduction in sharpness.
