John i bought two bucktails at 1 1/2 oz. each, removed the hair from one and replaced it with synthetic braided hair made by Kanekolan in white which come in various colors, and the synthetic hair totally out fished the bucktail hair and i added a extra 1/2 inch to the synthetic which gave it better action.

always learning from you and the answers to all the comments. One thing I've noticed is natural hair has a better fish-like profile (especially with feathers) when wet and seems to catch better if you have no gulp tail or trailer whereas the synthetic really needs a tail/trailer to complete the profile.

My catch ratio is 8 out of 10 are on the teaser. The bigger fluke have come on the bucktail. I mostly fish Spro bucktails with glow, pink shine, or salmon color Gulp grubs. Teaser is 16” above the bucktail.

The synthetic definetly is far more durable, it does drop easier when jigging. If I had one complaint about it, it would be that it gets caught in the gulp on the hook when removing or changing colors . Other than that, it produces just as well.

i was thrilled s&s started using synthetic hair and pleasantly surprised when my bucktail order came in the mail in the spring.ive tied my own for several years now using just synthetic hair and wondered why arent companies that produce bucktails using it..you are spot on with the sink rate because synthetic hair is solid and not hollow and the durability is way way more compared to bucktail..i just always wondered about scent..anyone who ties with bucktail knows how much bucktail stinks but i guess it doesnt make much difference to the fish..great video

Hi John. Just wanted to let you know. I’ve been ordering your bucktails. Love them. The new synthetic hair the hooks I think there might be a malfunction on the 2oz Bucktail the hook size seem smaller like 4/0-5/0 size. It definitely more narrow then the 1 1/2oz Bucktail. Just wanted you to know.

i use 3/4 oz bucktails off the beach for fluke and thought i'd give a white synthetic a try. i find with the 3/4 oz it doesn't cast as far as the hair. i attribute this to two things, the synthetic fibers staying flared out and creating a slight drag in the air and the fibers not absorbing any water which does make the bucktail slightly heavier then it's 3/4 oz. i did find those same properties made it easier to extract the hooks out of fish without wiping out all the hair at the end of the day.

I've been trying jigs with Kanelkelon , synthetic hair that women use for hair extensions etc. What I found is that although Soo much cheaper than bucktail, on a longer hair tied jig, the hair will tangle, but easily "combed" out with a fork, so one must check on the jig every few drops. I buy the Kanelkelon from women's hair shops for $3-6 for about 3 feet of hair!! Kanelkelon also comes in Every color imaginable!!

John, as always, another great video. Not having a boat personally I need to rely upon predicting well in advance for a charter and days before for a party boat the right conditions for catching fluke. I would be interested in learning the conditions that would predict a more reliable bite: out going vs incoming; wind direction, early, mid, or late fluke season, moon phase, morning vs afternoon, ..... I would appreciate hearing you thoughts!

Hey John! Have you ever tried fishing for fluke with fluke spoons? I’ve recently discover them. Tie a three way rig with either a bucktail or led on the bottom, and about a 24’’ leader leading to the spoon. I still tip it with gulp but when I have a 1+ mph drift I’m noticing it’s out fishing the hi lo.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 2 года назад
I do not use them because they depend on good drift conditions even more than bucktails. Many things will catch a fluke, the key is to be able to optimize the catch under a variety of drift conditions. My opinion is that bucktails do it best.

@adamjannetti6454
@adamjannetti6454 2 года назад
No disrespect to John, but S&S bucktails are not my first choice. I find they fray easily around the string wrap, and don’t have adequate epoxy. The swing hooks also have a massive hook, and I much prefer spro’s for fluking, which have thicker hair, better hooks, and are more durable

John. Care to comment now over a year later, on synthetic vs. real hair ? Did you stick mostly with real hair through the last two seasons ? Synthetic? Both(evenly)? A friend recently purchased an Andrus and was surprised to find that it was synthetic, so I stopped in my local tackle shop and asked them about it. They said the same thing as you-supply chain issues. They didn't mention the price or only one supplier, which I find astounding considering the overpopulation of deer here in the Northeast alone. As an aside, I'm targeting Striped Bass.

Hi John. Love your videos. I have a question about the trolling motor setup in this video. I am curious what his battery system is to power that minn kota. Specifically how many Amp Hours assuming a 36v system and does he run into any limitations s regarding trolling time. I fish out of RI and also follow you in SW Florida. I just bought a place in Cape Coral and look forward to learning another fishery. Thanks Rick

I have a 242 Sailfish CC and probably would still fish over structure 4 hrs max. So it sounds like the 60AH should give me plenty of time. Appreciate the input. Rick.

I am surprised by the pro synthetic comments...maybe they are better now... will try again..in certain areas of coastal NC I use bucktail teasers over a belly strip tied to a trolling sinker (1 to 2 oz depending) with 2 to 3 ft leader...the tackle shop was out of natural..bought synthetic..the kids (draggers..dead stick on a drift..with natural) outfished me 4 to 1..whereas I normally jig, set the hook and hand them the rod..could have been the better presentation that day...IDK
