Today We're diving into my favourite witchcraft movie...Practical Magic, and looking at what they got right about witchcraft and where it came from. There is so much within this, so grab a drink and sit back as we look through necromancy, banishing rituals, death omens, love spells, moon magic, seeing spirits, covens and so much more.
Pre-warning, if you haven't seen the movie, I would recommend doing so as this video contains spoilers and lots of magick. It is also a 12+ in the UK and 13 in the USA so take consideration of that, though you need to be 13 to have an account anyway so I would hope everyone is above that age regardless.
Note: I don't own the rights to the clips included, they are merely there to show context to the discussion.

Just read an interview with the Director (Vanity Fair). Apparently they had a witchcraft consultant for the movie, but didn't want to pay her what she asked. She said she would curse the film if they didn't. He sent that up to the legal department and the legal department said "not going to mess with this" and cut her a check. Also, the books are really good. All of them

Slight details you've gotten wrong she was paid "quite handsomely" but when asked to fly out because the actors wanted to meet her but she wanted gross points on the film and the rights to publish an offical cook book so thinking they were trying to buy her off with a hotel and a meeting with to famous people she called the director putting a curse on the film and after that he took the recording of the curse to legal and they paid her for the extra visit but she didn't get everything she wanted which honestly is pretty messed up with her because her demands were pretty insane for just a consultant

I'm definitely more of a Sally. I always felt that when Sally said "there is no devil in the craft", she was implying that witchcraft itself is neutral - neither good nor bad. And that kinda dives into how you described it as it being a skill, skills themselves being neither good nor bad, instead only the intent in which it is used - which heavily relies on the person. She was showing Gary she was harmless as she was using her skills to manufacture bath oils and that the aunts just like to meddle in people's love lives.
@Mokiefraggle

I also kind of presume it was a product of its times, wherein Wicca and Witchcraft were treated as basically interchangeable, particularly by Hollywood. In the 90s, you basically didn't find books in the Spirituality/New Age section of a bookstore that weren't about Wicca, or at least conflating a lot of Wiccan rules into whatever type of craft it was speaking on. Lots of frequent espousing of how "witches don't worship Satan, because he's a Christian construct," and the belief in "An it harm none, do as thou will." It feels like they might be using the statement that they don't practice devil worship because their belief doesn't have a devil to enforce and imply the latter.

When Sally invites all the women that bullied her, I felt that they only bullied her because she was different, in a good way, and them coming to help was a way of them accepting her because Sally finally accepted herself. I relate so much to Sally more than Jillian. ❤
@WitchyHallows-gi2gn
@WitchyHallows-gi2gn 7 месяцев назад
Sally invited them because she knew they knew she was a witch. They all already knew and they all accepted what she was. Their irritation due to her not admitting it was very obvious. Think of the scene in the store where the cop realized her tea/coffee had a spoon that mixed the tea on its own. If that can happen without her noticing as an adult imagine what happened when she was a child. Being called out like you lack intelligence never makes people happy. Sally “I’m not a witch” People “But I just saw…” Sally “I AM NOT A WITCH!” Now put together a whole town that believes she’s a witch and her practically calling them out for their lack of intelligence. Heck even her employee complained that she just needed to admit it already because she was fooling no one.

The book and the movies are very different but both great. One scene that I wish they had included in the film was the outcome of the love spell at the beginning. He grows so obsessed that he literally won't leave her alone so she returns to have the spell undone, but the aunts ignore her. I just think it would help illustrate why you have to "be careful what you wish for. "

The last time I watched this movie I noticed that the aunts are doing some weaving on a loom when the first love spell scene happens, and the woman knocks on their door. I am super into fiber arts, hand spinning, knitting, weaving with natural fibers. It helps me feel more connected to the earth to wear things made from scratch from natural fiber, and I think it's so cool that they included this in the movie! It totally matches up with the aunts style too, their handmade, mended, antique clothes totally seem like they could have been hand made or passed down from other women who made them in the family.

In Greek folklore throwing salt or spitting over the left shoulder is happening simply because this is where bad spirits or bad energy or the evil eye is sitting. We can see similar things to other cultures too. In Carlos Castañeda books, Don Juan is revealing that death is our eternal companion and is located one arm length behind the left shoulder. But also in Christianity's pop images you often see the demon speaking to you over the left shoulder and the angel from the right one. Generally the left side is consider to be the sinister one in many traditions. Thank you for this beautiful video, Practical Magic is definitely one of my absolute favourite movies.

And it's when Gary says to Sally that he wished for her too. Now in the very beginning of the movie, before the aunts meddle with the love spell. Sally walks under a tree and the tree leaves fall on her and she looks back at it. That's the moment Gary wished for her too! And it's so easily missed and when someone told me I was like oh hey! One thing about this movie that i remember is that Angelov is a serial killer who marks his victims by branding them with a ring that he wears before strangling them. If i remember correctly, he marks Gillian before he gets killed and that "opens" her to the possibility of being possessed. She was about to be his next victim when Sally shows up to rescue her. Also! Gillian uses Belladonna as a sedative to help herself sleep. Belladonna is a sedative that can be very toxic when consumed. The name Belladonna comes from the fact that in times long past, women would use a solution containing Belladonna to dilate their pupils to appear more beautiful.

I'm very sorry that you had to fear losing your child because people are so ill-informed! Maybe you already knew this, but in recent years, a new organization has popped up called the Satanic Temple. It's different from the Church of Satan and other Satanic groups, because it's not about worshiping Satan at all. Its tenets are about individual autonomy and compassion for others. It sprang up as a reaction to the tyranny some Christians want to inflict on others in the US. Satan, for this group, is a symbol of challenging the status quo and protecting individuals from mob rule. So, if you look it up, agree with its core tenets, and feel safe enough, you can always tell people, "Yes, I am a Satanist." And hand them a Satanic Temple card.

Many hands make light work. That's the point of that levitation trick as seen in The Craft. It was a staple in the seances we used to do as teenagers. Just have everyone use two fingers. If you really concentrate, and you have enough people (and the person being levitated stays perfectly stiff), it will really, really work. This is how I feel about the sisters bringing in all the townies who used to give them grief. Just as long as they're there to help (and it doesn't hurt if some of them really do believe the sisters are witches), the more the merrier!

I love this movie. It's one of the very few ones I actually have. I've also read the book which is very different, but they are both great stories. I did want to point out that is wasn't only women that bullied them growing up. The two women from Sally's shop came too. And those two seemed very supportive, possibly even practitioners themselves. I liked how the one woman called another and said something along the lines of, "great news. Sally just came out." Though yes it was mostly women that gave them trouble and I imagine that would muck up the magic. But it was a good thematic choice with several of the other things that happened in the movie and the resolution. 💐

Great video! This is one of my favorite movies 💜 you were mentioning kind of wondering about the midnight margaritas scene; I wanted to point out the tequila that the aunts used to make the margaritas was left on the porch (assumably by Jimmy’s spirit) so it makes sense that the entire scene was a bit wild energetically. It all began when they found the tainted tequila. Same brand of tequila Jimmy had been drinking in the car-ride kidnapping, the tequila that sally poisoned and ultimately led to his death. His energy was definitely in it, a hateful negative energy that led to the women all taking uncontrolled jabs at eachother.

HearthWitch, my daughter introduced me to this wonderful movie several years ago and I totally love it!. Every time it's on either Amazon Prime or RU-vid we both watch it together. I love the fact that you went through every scene of this movie with a fine tooth comb and thoroughly explained all the elements of magic presented in the movie--excellent job! Now after watching this video I will definitely go back and watch "Practical Magic" today again for the 5th time before Halloween. Also, I do agree, that Sally is also my favorite sister because she is "practical" (pun intended) in all intentions of everything she does in her life in the movie. However, Jilly (Nicole Kidman) does everything scatterbrained without thinking of the consequences of her actions (she just wants to have a good time) is the opposite of Sally (in a dualistic world it makes sense --yin and yang). In my opinion, all of the cast members in this movie did a phenomenal job in the presentation of the material, while adding humor along the way! It's definitely a must-watch film whether or not you practice witchcraft! After watching this video, I decided to pair your video with "Practical Magic" while watching it with either my daughter or some friends on Halloween. Great video, thank you so much!♥😃

@vg9616 what sort of magic were you looking for if I may inquire? I know it's not big in the Pazazz department in terms of ritual ceremonial and spellcraft aspects; but I find the magic that Cassie works is subtle, her cousin Abigail has a bit more flair in the spellcraft area, but Cassie always inspired me to turn my mundane life into something magical and with a dash of more meaning. I also just adore her archetype... (Sorry I'm a little biased.. I grew up watching them every autumn)

I am a nurse and I frequently deal with death. I have seen this beetle time and time again before my patients die. This has repeated in differnt places, in old and new builds. I have several theories.....one being that there might be something to do with the smells/hormones or reactions that take place in the body when someone dies/is dying attracts them....OR they are there specifically for me as a helpful hint from the universe as I recognise them as a correspondence so its a good way to get me attention....I of course lean more towards some scientific reason as I'm quite sceptical for a witch but I've always wondered what it is? I did wish that the film makers gave better translations to the spells. For example, young Sally's love spell 'Amas Veritas" translates to "I Love the Truth." The Spell the group used to banish Angelov is "Di te perdant te maledico" This could either be Italian or Latin. In Italian it translates to "I curse you perdant" In Latin it translates to "God Destroy You, I curse You" However Perdant is a Corsican/French word meaning to Lose, losing or Loser. So if you translate from Corsican it means "I curse you for losing" Personally I believe its a combination of all the translations I provided above to mean "God, Destroys you loser, I curse You." Also tossing salt over the left shoulder. There is a reason for this. There is an old belief that if you want to do negative workings, if you stand on your left foot, pointing your index finger of your left hand at a target, with right eye closed, you can curse your enemies. The left side (for right handed people) is considered to be the receptive side enegetically where as the right side (for right handed people) is considered projective. So if a curse is going to come your way, it comes through the left side of your body, into the left eye and then throughout the body. So throwing salt over the left shoulder puts a stop/creates a energetic barrier to prevent negative energies from attaching to you.

I think the line “There’s a little witch in all of us” is an important factor in the participation of the townswomen in the exorcism. They bullied Sally because they were alienated from their own inner-magic. When they got to participate as a community in spellwork, it not only healed the sisters & dispelled the curse, it healed the rift in the community as well.

Dear Hearth, First let me say, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! You’re the best! Thank you for sharing honest unbiased factual information about the Craft! You’re a bright light in a sea of REALLY BAD, silly, ridiculous, and sometimes dangerous Witchy Woo-woo!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Next as someone who always felt from an early age spiritually different and Witchy. Added to the fact I am 6’8”/275lbs/Multi-racial/look like an American Football Player but went on for a Jurist Doctorate/and is Gay… basically an amalgamation of disparate stereotype! 🤪🤪🤪 And has been a practicing Witch since I was 17. First as a Wiccan, and now an Eclectic form of Traditional Witchcraft. This movie has been my “Jam” for years! I like you and almost every Practitioner I have ever met from every Tradition loves this movie. I have seen it about 4 times so far this year. And will undoubtedly watch it again a few more times before the end of the year! In fact if I meet a guy I seriously want to date and include in my life. And it comes time to “Come Out” of the Broom Closet with him… or even a new friend. I will just cook a nice meal (with intent on communication & understanding); plop them down in front of the television to watch “Practical Magic” in a movie night situation. And then afterwards explain that this is a MOVIE! I can’t resurrect the dead! But pretty much… THIS IS ME! (I like you am VERY “Sally!”) And then ask, “Any questions?!” 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ This always opens up a great and often fascinating dialogue & discussion. And either proves this is someone I want in my life… or “you know where the door is… please use it. NOW!” So once again. Thank you for all of your videos. And a great review of one of my favorite movies! 🌑🧙🏽‍♂️🕯️✨🧹🐈‍⬛🌕

Practical Magic is one of my all time favorite movies & a Halloween must see movie in my house (actually, it's a year round must see movie). As someone with a sister, I love how Sandra Bullock& Nicole Kidman (& even the aunts) bicker like actual sisters. I have a little of both Sally & Gillian in me, with a wee bit of Aunt Jett & a huge dose of Aunt Francis! It's based on the book by Alice Hoffman, who has written other "prequel" books about the Owens family - one about the aunts, Jett (Brigette) & Francis when they were young & one about Maria's origin story. I highly recommend that everyone give them a read. I love that you did this video. I also noticed some of the extra little bits that made the movie feel more authentic.

It didn't occur to me until seeing it again here (I haven't watched this movie in ages, though I do love it), but when the girls throw Jillian's "banishing syrup" jug into the ocean, it could be intentionally done as a means of dispersing the banishing spell's power. After all, it's common to use fire, burial in earth or salt, or being cast into free-flowing water as a means of breaking a working and dispersing its energy. There's a definite sense that the girls have been learning from the aunts, and this feels like something they would have been quick to teach them, in order to ensure they knew how to properly end a working. After all, they didn't just dump it out or throw it in the trash, they very specifically ran to the edge of the water to get rid of it. Also, on the "Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder" thing...I've heard that it's a thing that comes from the concept of left being "sinister" and tied with negativity in a lot of beliefs, including the idea that it might stem from the belief that the Devil is lurking over the left shoulder to tempt you to sin. Thus, throwing the salt over the left shoulder is in fact tossing it straight into the Devil's eye, and temporarily blinding him.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. The first time I've seen this was when I was up with my second newborn son five years ago. He was born in September, so very close to the Halloween season. So this was on quite a bit, and popping up during the wee lonely hours as I nursed. I like to say that the Owens family kept me company when I felt a little lonely being up around the clock. Also, I had developed my Claire senses around that time, and I believe it was due to giving birth, and being a mother for the second time. I didn't know what it was at first, and was quite scared of it. I believe now it was family, or guardians keeping a close eye on us, and letting us know not to worry. Fortunately, over the past few years I've met, and befriended people who were knowledgeable, and found out that this sensitivity runs in my family. I began looking into witchcraft even though I was born, and raised Catholic. I'm glad you mentioned that it's a secular practice, that it spans different beliefs. It makes me feel less like a walking contradiction. I think it was a path I was meant to explore, with caution, and respect. I hide openly from my conservative loved ones, as I've always worn my love of the unusual on my sleeve, and don't openly discuss with anyone who is, well...not open.

I thought for sure, based on the title of this video, that you would've mentioned one of my personal favorite parts of the movie. It's when Sally's red headed daughter (I can't remember her name at the moment), is getting bullied by one of the neighborhood kids with his mother present. In response to the bullying, the daughter looks the boy in the eye and points her finger directly at him while she shouts, "I HOPE YOU GET MEASLES!", and instantly Sally reaches out and lowers the girl's arm and tries to claim that she didn't mean it. And it's shortly afterwards when we see the boy again in town and he indeed has gotten measles, lol. From a magical practice perspective, I thought it would be a perfect addition to your topic because it relates so perfectly to the importance of not only giving breath and life to your intent by speaking it aloud (especially when so emotionally charged), but also displays the importance of using her finger to direct that intent out in a very direct way. And the fact that she's looking right at him and saying it directly to him only strengthens it, because if nothing else, having the person who's being hexed KNOW that they're being hexed increases the odds of being able to use their own beliefs and fears against them in a self fulfilling prophecy/placebo type of way. 😜😁 My boyfriend always points out that part of the movie and says it reminds him of me, as I've always struggled with self control and filtering the things I say before I absentmindedly or sarcastically put them into spoken words, lol. Some would perceive that as a gift, but in reality, it's a constant challenge that I usually fail to recognize until the words have already left my mouth. So for me personally, it's always been the most relatable part of the movie. Sorry this comment turned out to be a novel, lol. I don't usually talk about this kinda stuff with people outside of my very small circle of loved ones and I don't get out much these days, lol. Sorry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
