Hey I noticed you Milwaukee tools in the back there. If you ever have a GM with the proximity key FOB system that drives in and then won't start again saying it can't detect the fob or no fob present, Unplug your Milwaukee charger they put out RF interference on the same Frequency as the FOB's. Great video.
Looking back at this from 2021, I now have and use a Maximus 3.0 (launch) an Autel MS906PRO, and a snap-on Triton D8. Still accurate. Snap on is king of domestics, but not by much. Autel rules the Euro stuff, but it’s pretty great at everything, and the launch is king of Asian vehicles, but still whoops snap-on at euro. If I could only use 1, it would probably be the MS906PRO from Autel. It’s fast, powerful and cheaper than the other two.
From my experience, I would pick an Autel Maxisys MS908 pro every time. Not just for value for money, but because it has way more functionality than any other one diag tool on the market. Other lads from local garages are always coming round to borrow it because their scan tool won't work on a certain car, and more often than not the Autel does. It also has alot of functionality for some of the more unusual system on certain vehicles. Hands down it is the best product range on the market currently. Now I don't want a multimeter or a scope built into a scan tool, I have separate scopes and meters etc, so I don't really understand why people would want to choose a scanner because it has better scope. I own a room full of various scan branded scan tools, but most stay in their hard cases while both of my MS908 pros are in constant use, I also quite like the Launch Pro 3 for a super cheap tool. I can't remember the last time I turned on either my Verus, Modis or Ethos, I find them all slow and useless in comparison, I really should put them on ebay or something before they become totally out of date and worthless.
Had a Autel Pro when i opened my shop 3 years ago. It made its money back in 3 months, I was a snap on veteran for 20yrs plus. You just need to understand the tool, I did not see his issue with checking modules that are not there, it will do a complete scan if you ask it to
I like the snap-on products... but I don't like the cost of software updates. The subscription option would be great, if it were one price to update all devices.
Thomas EXOVCDS yeah, it sucks if you don't pay off the tool, and do all the updates, you can basically pay continuous until they no longer support your tool
Autel is 20X over what the Scrap-On wants to be I have a lot more tools than what you are comparing but the MaxiSYS Elite is my go to any day of the week. Pushing a Tool?? The Edge will just krap out. I got that POS Edge last year and I would NEVER EVER buy another Snap-On Scan Tool. Scope is OK at best. Compare it to a PICO and you would say Hello Garbage Can.
Ralf's Automotive Diagnostics & Repair I just bought the autel 906bt and their scope module and I find it better than our verus. So far it has performed everything that the snap on one will and scope is better too
So you think the Snap-On is a good tool for domestic? I find it inferior more times than not. I have the Edge and would NEVER again spend money on the SO again.
I’ve done nothing but diagnose for the last 20 years, Autel is good, however I prefer the oem tools, we have almost every oem scan tool, and if I’m not using that, I grab my launch, and the 8 channel pico I use on every car
If you get into anything that's medium or heavy duty you will want Launch! Snap on is useless for medium to heavy duty just letting you know ive never really touched Autels
This helps a lot. Its so hard to decide which scan tool to get without having prior knowledge of it. It seems like the ultimate would be to have the dealer scan tool for each make and a pico scope.
Yes that would be the best, but not cheap or easy, but if you see a lot of a certain make, it might make sense to buy that car lines OE scanner, that is what the shop I am at does. Glad you found the video helpful!
Hey I have an opportunity to buy a Snap on Modis for 500 bucks. The truck owner told me it can never go past 2012. Is that worth fooling with? I feel like the 4 channel Scope alone is worth the money but I'm concerned as to whether the tool can be repaired if it malfunctions.
I use the autel at work for our goto tool, and when it works, its great, aside from the translations, once in awhile bi directional controls dont work, biggest pia is the touchscreen freezing, we've had to hard reboot so many times the pwr button broke, this is our second and probably last one.
I have literally owned them all at one time or another. I have field techs and each carries the Autel in the 9 series. We have several Snap_on scanners and two full sets of Asian and Domestic OEM units with current subscriptions on all. We dumped the OTC theLaunches and Hanatechs. The Autel is our go to tool and if we need more we go to the OEM. For EURO we use Bavarian Technic Ross Tech and BTs version of a Porsche Dongle. Bosch has entered into a program with Mitchell to market a full service tool including some shop management features. I should see mine this next week and will Dump AllData to pay part of the Mitchell monthly bill.
We have auto logic, snap on, I scan and autel etc etc. Autel is by far the best value. It has a wide range of abilities and coverage. It will auto detect the vehicle, complete scan every module and print it out wirelessly. I like the snap on tool for graphing data pid's. Auto logic for going deep into euro cars and the technical support they provide.
Your Autel looks like a 822 / $800 model. Which is a great value for what it does. I have the Autel 908 Elite $3000 , and it is awesome. Most of my jobs are Euros , coding , flashing , immo, keys no problem. I did have issues programming GM modules , had to use a Tech 2
I had my heart set on the newest matco tool but settled for snap on, but after using and it for a while and they recently put European on the devices only downside I see it that it cannot program keys. So the trouble with setting adaptations should be gone for you. Thanks for the video. I feel this helped me to justify me spending 6k on a scanner
My first was a ds708 it cratered after 1 1/2 years, i did like it though. second was a pegisys because i could supposedly flash with it didn't get chance before the wireless part of the dongle quit, could only use docked which it still works today though it's collecting a lot of dust, i liked it too although very cumbersome, third was verus i use it the most liked it so much got the pro version which i love although like you say wont do everything but what does? that's why if your a shop you need more than one scanner. next i bought a maxisys it's a good tool, fills the gap. now i just ordered a launch 431v+ cant wait to check it out. a shop needs all the guns they can get to take on today's cars. i have various other low budget hand held scanners as well and use most of them to one degree or another. verus i believe is the most user friendly, guided tests and troubleshooter can't be beat. nice review thanks for uploading.
Thank you for binge watching my videos much appreciated! The only do everything tools is the OE scan tool and those only do that car line and getting all the OE tools can be very expensive!
I’ve had the Maxisys mini now for 2 years and it’s been a great scanner. Very fast and easy to use. In my opinion it’s faster and more user friendly compared to the shops snap on solus
The Auto tech does of course have the option to look at standard digital oscilloscopes and/or handheld (good quality, high sample rate) oscilloscopes. These can be had for a fraction of the cost of a snap-on with oscilloscope (especially 4 channel, I find 2 adequate 90% of the time). Now that is an option, but will be limited in so far as the waveform database for particular signals will have to be sourced elsewhere. Ok, it does mean you have to lug an oscilloscope as well as your scanner, but hey ho $10k for full snapon or $2-4k (guesstimate) for part snapon/autel/launch and good oscilloscope. But it is a practical option to consider when staring out and low on budget. Excellent video and good sound advice.
Great video great comparison, I have to say launch rocks I have run it to its end! And it has not let me down domestic Asian cars. I would buy another one.
Hey man. first awsome videos. best scan tool overview so far in my opinion. I own both verus edge and the maximus and the old ds-708. and as you said they all have there quirks with certain things for sure. crazy thing is I have been having trouble with my maximus doing keys on honda. it wouldn't enter the function. pulled out the verus and did it no problem . just crazy how somethings work and others dont. but awsome vids keep up the good work.
I'm coming from a ds708 looking to update and want either modis or verus for the scope features. I was thinking maybe genisys evo 5 for awhile updated to 2012. The Verus seems awesome though and might end up getting that.
Finally, someone who actually uses a scan tool for all it's worth Edit: Pico Scopes are what we used at the Toyota dealership I worked at. They're pretty decent, I agree
Mike, thank you for the compare and contrast of the three scan tools. My shop owns a snap on Versus and i have experienced the limits of the verus. I face a lot of european at work so an surely or launch is in my future
You sir have earned your self another subscriber. Also. I have a matco/launch scanner as well. I love mine. Very capable and fast. Blows my shops Autel out of the water. Like you said, there is some bad interpretation/coding. I just did a review on mine. I have never cared much for the snap on scanners but I love the scope in the verus.
Flatrate Master your welcome. I just discovered your channel. I like your videos and I'm glad you want to share your knowledge with others. Most people I've met or heard from that have been a mechanic over 10 years just tell me how I got into the wrong profession.
I have met some bitter techs too!Their are positives and negatives to any job, if you like what you do for a living you will never work a day in your life!
I have 4 high paying trade tickets and just started as an auto tech, I like it. It can be frustrating and fast paced but it is rewarding and fulfilling.
Great hands man I could just read your hands you don't have to say anything I can just read the sign language with your hands your hands are really cute too I like your hands
I own all three of them and like he said they all have there faults but when using the three of them it gives me lots of coverage on what i can do with different manufactures
I have a solus ultra, and an Autel Maxisys. I like the Snap On better for daily use, The Autel is better for the deeper functions. I HATE the data on the Autel.
pedro l rivera negron The shop has a 1st gen GSCAN, and other than the programing end the scan tool of Maxsys mini is the same as the Elite. Please remember I am a working tech not here to sell you stuff so I can't just get access to any tool and if I do not have extensive time with a tool I will not review it.Thanks for watching
Here is an update to your video and your Autel Maxisys Mini 905. My two go to Tools are the Maxisys Mini 905 and a Snap on ultra scope. With updates the Autel scan tool has become the tool to grab. I work as a L1 Ase Tech for over 35 years. You will not sell me Snap on scan tools period. If you haven't updated that mini 905 do so lot's of added features added to it. Reply
if you want SPEED, PRECISION, Unlimited Record Time and Professional PrintOut Wave Form---PICO is the way to go....I been doing Diagnostics at Professional Level + BAR will love your reports. Especially if your doing smog diagnostics.
@flatratemaster : I own a Solus Ultra currently but I'm narrowed down my new tool to an Maxisys Elite. I'm working on a suite of new diagnosis tools as well. Pico scope, Redline complete, Mastercool a/c mobile recovery unit, wireless digital scale, used trailer, etc......just to name a few. I do buy OTC test equipment & was distracted by the Evolve earlier this year but have since come to my senses. What repair software do you prefer? I would guess Mitchell (due to Snap-On). I am currently using Idenifix with great success & ease of use plus no contract.
We have Alldata and Identifix, I prefer Alldata for repair info, but Identifix for Diagnostic info and wiring digrams, quicker to find based on code than Alldata
My costumers usually want to do modifications in different modules : disable a seat heating on 1 seat , the mirror mover does not work after changing it, seat belt beeping disable, changing navigation and/or all information message language, test components to make sure that it is faulty, upload the newest software on different modules ect. ect. Which is the best to make output tests on a car not "just" scan and erase fault codes. Many times I see that - for example on a SAAB or Benz or VW, - almost all the modules are listed but the 75% are disabled, so for a high price I recieve a simple fault code eraser. The question is what do you recommend for a OE level tool? Or should I buy tools for each manufacturer?
Quick and to the point, looking at an IM608, I currently have a MK906BT, in the market for a scope, had my doubts about Hantek, I also do electronic work so scopes are nothing new to me, Hantek makes a decent bench scope,, not all that great, nothing like a Rigol. My question is, why couldn't I use my bench scope on a car? Rigol does the same stuff and more.
That was by far the best review on scan tools I have seen in years & the best presentation I have one of the first Vetronic Master Tech's for almost 25 years I also have EASE Diagnostics Pro Software for over 5 years--but as my Canadian Friend said in a comment below, it is constant calls to get type of product to work with Windows, other wise it is a good product- but no actuators So I'm narrowed down to MaxiSYS Elite & a Pico Your thoughts & who should I get the Autel from ? The Pico is obviously the Autonerdz I just moved from N.J. to M.D. & the U.S.Tool Suppliers I usually use seem expensive for Autel & the other 90% are who knows where No one is ever going to get thru to Autel in Long Island--so you are left with the best tool out there it seems but updates, help, problems I don't see happening so far !!
pc zapp thank you for the comment! AES wave is a awesome place to purchase from they carry Autel last i looked and will support you even if Autel doesn't, FYI they are an authorized dealer for Autel US
ASE Wave always seems way over priced for anything I pay a little more many times from Tool Topia but neither they nor ASE have the Elite I'am going to get the uMicro Back Probes #05-764 They were $19.00 now $12.00 so the shipping is less of an issue--check them out Let me know if you find a good price on the Autel
Great video man! Just what I was looking for! For my budget,I've narrowed it down between the Maxisys MS 906 and OTC Encore.I work on a lot of European so I was thinking Autel, but there's zero support with that tool. OTC seems to have direct fixes in the tool, plus direct connections to Identifix and even Google. I don't know what to do... What do you think? Thanks and good luck with your channel!
OTC was useless on Euro in the past, so IDK, I have not used any recent OTC tool to comment on them. I have had very little trouble with my Autel, but others have had issues, Autel is a google Tablet so you can go to Identifix fix or Google on the tool with wifi.
I bought the Matco MaxGo, and it came with 1 year free sub to identifix. It's the midrange between maxme and the Max2.0. I use it mainly for Srs, abs, pre and post health scans in the collision repair shop.
Great video! I'm in the market right now but not sure if I aughtta get a scanner or a laptop and a reader for little stuff. I use IDS and VCDS on the regular, but then I gotta get their data links..... Ah, my wallet hurts just thinking about it.
Agree with factory tools are goto.only flaw is laptop or good tablet for each to avoid conflict file issues although there are ways around this. I run most factory and topend scan tools in our business.Snapon was the last I purchased due to negative reports,so I purchased an older verus pro with XP and std HDD.Even with 16.2 version and slow boot up it has been better on Ford Australia than the Launch Pad 2 and Autel with its dedicated Ford Australia software. The Asian market especially Toyota is weak though if using outside USA models. I like the 4 channel scope, nice and easy to use and print off.The launch pad 2 is a good all round tool but I use the 4 channel scope box through the older pad 1 and it works well or else after these 2 for quick hook ups I will go to our Pico.Found the Autel range great. I started with a Ds708 which incidentally can be fully updated for free now they are a discontinued model. The elite is as you say,has some glitches,go nowhere selections like the launch but have found it excellent on Honda reprogramming pcm,tcm.,BCM.Big downgrade here was when they had to remove brand icons and replace with round icons. I use autoland for European with its additional program software on interlinked laptop for BMW,Volvo etc.G scan 2 is great on Hyundai,Kia,Holden and its scope set up is similar to snap on.Foxwell has been another brand we are beginning to use for some dedicated brands like Landrover and jaguar really models to latest. Launch 12/24volt scan for cars and light/medium/heavy trucks is a nice feature and software updates often daily in a year subscription, same for Autel and autoland. Unsure with snap on, about to enquire re upgrade to latest here.
like your video bud great explanation !!!!!! and guys remember there's not a scan tool out there that does everything !!!!!! but if u are going to get one and your budget is 1000 $ get the autel to me is the best for the money out there but there tech support is the worst LOL I OWN THE MAXI PRO W/J2534 BOX and had to do a reflash on the ecm for a new calibration on a 2006 hyundai tiburon just to verify if that j2534 box was compatible (YES AUTEL J2534 BOX DON'T REFLASH ALL CARS) GET ONE FOR DREWTECH IF YOU ARE GOING TO START A JORNEY ON FLASHING OR PROGRAMING!!! ANY WAYS and after 4 hrs trying to make then answer the phone the tech support guy din't know what a hyundai tiburon was THATS HOW BAD THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT WAS AND THAT WAS IN 2017 !!!!!!!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I needed a video like this. I'm about to get back in the field a trying to decide which scan tool to purchase. Still undecided, but this video helps a great deal.
hey i hope all is well did you come across a good scan tool, im thinking snap on and a autel on the side just to show customers potential issues $$$, thats my plan
Thanks for the great information! I've been thinking about your yellow matco box, you could totally pull off a Kill Bill theme with a picture of David Caradine, Uma Thurman and some Hattori Hanzo Swords! At the very least it would grantee some thumbs up! 🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒 Anyway, keep doing what your doing because the videos are great!
I’m a mobile mechanic on a limited budget I tent to only work on Asian and US vehicles occasionally a European captured import (opel/Holden) rebranded as Buick’s and Pontiac’s. What’s a cheaper under 1000$ tool that will help me with relearn procedures ecu swaps and live data on no starts? Enjoy your videos thanks
Thanks for the reviews. Just got maxisys mini this week. That matco/lanuch has help me where the versus pro failed miserably a few times. After abs module replaced on nissan truck, needed programmed, maximus came though. I do like snap-on. The component test info is very nice. Probably buy modis ultra next. I like them well. Cheers
What does the Launch have troubleshooting help? I have the Snap-on Sulas ultra. I love the trouble shooting on. That is my Biggest issue is trouble shooting. I rely on that quite heavily!! Just curious.
Any video reviews on the Topdon Plus vs Lauch X431 Pro vs Autel MK906 within the $1,200 range cant find any comparing to find the best bang for the buck to work best on GM and Chevrolet, Ford Etc..?
I've always believed that in order to work properly, you need more than one brand of scan tool. For years I've had an OTC Genisys, which has been upgraded from time to time. A few years ago, I purchased a Bosch KTS 340, which then got UN supported by Bosch after only a couple of years. Bought a Launch X431 Pro 3 a couple of years ago to replace the Bosch, which was slower than even my OTC, but as you point out, the Launch isn't great with domestic makes. I am considering purchasing a used Snap On Verdrict D7, with current program 17.2, but wonder if I ought to purchase a Solus Ultra instead (also used with current software). If I understand it correctly, both units have a two channel scope (don't scope hardly at all) and that the Verdict is slower than the Solus Ultra. Besides that was is the basic difference between the two if they were available at the same price point. And, yes, I have subscribed to your channel (note its the only RU-vid channel that I have subscribed to!) Thanks for your outstanding videos and the ability to educate other techs.
The Solus Ultra is way faster on boot up than the Verdict, no scope at all on the Solus, you have to go to the Modis Ultra or Edge to get a scope, or Verus. Keep in mind the Verdict is a dead tool, no longer made, and may not be supported in the future, but is a good tool and will have the same Scan Software as any Snap On Scan tool. Thank you for Subscribing!
In addition to what I am saying, THERE is a huge difference when it comes to updating the latest software. Snap on will charge you every quarter of update the you missed, while AUTEL will not could be 3 years out of update and AUTEL will backtrack you for a flat regular price.
Question does that snapon have wiring diagrams?or show the wires for a particular sensor on a particular car. If it does its easily the best as buying a subscription for wiring cost another 1000€
right now i have an otc evolve (actually the mac version but i got a good deal on it) Im very dissapointed with my purchase though. i dont think i will be buying anything diag from OTC in the future. im a greenhorn with diagnostic. im realizing i need a scope. ive been looking at used snap on modis ultra. i think your video has put me in the right direction.
They dont call it Obsolete Tool Company for nothing , always been disappointed with OTC , snap on is so overpriced , autel and launch are great for me however when it comes to VW Audi i use the Ross Tech , depends on what you make money on i guess
just come across your channel, nice review, get a pico and you won't use the verus scope much i been using one for a good few years now it takes a while to hook up but is well worth the time ,i use the autel for scanning most of the time it does a decent job for the cars in the uk
I'm looking at possibly buying the Maximus 2.0. This video was very helpful. I'm on the fence because this would be the first scan tool I get that's not a snap on. My biggest concern is the maximus 2.0 speed and reliabilty. The snap on is always fast and have never had it crash. How is the speed with the maximus 2.0? Is it prone to crashing? -love the videos keep it up.
We have the maximus 2.0 and the snapon. The maximus actually out performs the snapon. Snapon doesn't do radio, instrument cluster and modules the maximus does not. Maximus 2.0 now does heavy duty truck(diesel). Now maximus does program most key fobs, security keys, and tells if a circuit has a short. The maximus is a lot cheaper and pretty much beats the crap out of snapon. Now the autel you have in this video is not the big dog autel. The autel maxisys pro and elite has the j2534 box to do ecu reflash. The maximus 2.0 also does vin code and some ecu program. All in all snapon is no comparison to price and performance. The snapon has been sent back twice already and the maximus keeps ticking. The touch is a little crappy on the maximus but like I mentioned for the price its a no brainer. I've had the shop on get pissed because he paid all that money for the newest snapon and the maximus stil does more. But the autel maxisys elite is. What I'll be purchasing next. The launch jbox and jbox ll are awesome as well. The vehicle coverage is so great with launch B Bugatti and Maserati is in the vehicle coverage. Hell theres vehicles it covers we'll more than likely wont even see or work on😂😂😂😂
I think you maybe a little early saying otc is out. If anything Bosch taking over their scanner division helped in my opinion with as many oe tools Bosch makes. I think Autel still needs to mature some more in the states an have better quality control. My ds708 only lasted six months an then gave up the ghost. Launch I've just never liked an snap on needs to give me another reason to spend 10k over my 2nd gen verus for the edge other than it's thinner an faster. I think otc has the best user interface. But these are all opinions but like you said there's no perfect scan tool
Great video used snap on at school loved it but I own a launch crp123 great tool for just codes and graphing, lacks on factory side but for 125 what can you expect. just a heads up try and keep camera a little more focused
The snap on scanner works just fine with European cars with the right software and has more test functions then the Matco, I have both and don't use the Matco very often.
Ron Bowman I just replaced a power steering pump on a 03 s55 mag with abc and snap on took away rodeo mode with an update I just did. Tried a Zeus and they don’t have it either. Now I know I had this function because it was the first thing I used my verus on when I got it in 2014. I’ve come to the realization that I will need 2 scan tools unfortunately. So this vid for me is just deciding autel vs launch. But snap on is no bueno for Asian and European cars. A simple throttle body relearn on Nissan/infinity is coin toss for this tool but autel takes mins. That’s just my opinion though buddy!
I don't have a whole lot of money right now just starting out I saw it on Amazon for 160 I was wondering if you things that would be a good beginner for a diagnostic tool until I could save up some money and get a good one
I had a family member pass away an received a matco tool maxme given to me by my cousin it was her dads.. i didnt get anything other than the tablet scanner an the charging cord .. id like to use it but i cant figure out how to connect to vehicles i cant seem to find a replacement cable n Bluetooth adapter ANY information would be very much appreciated, thanks.
I have a launch torque is it any good? Haven't used it yet. Also I was looking to buy the vantage pro..they don't sell it. Ultra took its place....now they tell me vantage legend is the newest. Have you heard anything about the new snap on tools?
can you turn off all lights on the dashboard (car has electrical grounding problem... so all lights on without there being issues...) GM Captiva 2007 model
Thanks. I'm in the market for a new scan too. This autoengunity i have is nothing more than a fishing lure LOL The three you mentioned are in the running but snap on is 3 times the price. For a diy I have seen the launch and autel online from amazon and i hear they're not updatable or warranteed in north america and sold direct online from china. I tried calling both and never could get thru. Did you buy your autel online. Cheers Steve.
STEVE ROB Yes, i bought it from a reputable source, mine is a US market tool, but it is true if you get a grey market tool ,the US divisions of Autel or Launch will not let you update or help with issues. Thanks for watching
Hi Steve Rob, Car quest offers both, talk to your local sales manager they can get the tool and assist with getting it looked after or updated for either of the tools.
My verus D10 has done the job on pretty much everything that has came thru the shop in the past few years except for any type of programming needs. I do need some type of passthru to do that, but dont know which one. I just bought a launch crp touch pro to do the simple stuff. I need some input on which passthru device I should invest my money on?
Hello master, do you know which of them does control birectionally the pressure control valve (pcv) on the common rail system??? Thank you for your honesty!
Great video and you have a new subscriber. I'm more of a DIYer, but Lord willing I can soon start doing some vehicle repair on the side and have something to do when I retire from my State job. I have an OBD2 scan tool for trouble codes, but I'm looking at diagnostic scanners as well. I've looked at Autel, Matco, Launch, OTC, and Snap-on. With all the reviews I've watched on RU-vid and reading about the various ones I've looked at I'm always drawn to the Snap-on. Yes, I know they cost more and even Snap-on scanners cain't do it all, but they still appear to be a better investment.
Snap On is very good at what they do! keep a look out on ebay many used Snap on Older models scan tools sell pretty cheap. Thank you for watching and subscribing
Flatrate Master I have my eye on the Ethos and the Solus. The Ethos is more affordable, but the Solus has the troubleshooting feature that would be more helpful.
Which scan tool would say best choice DIY user for doing ecm replacement on Asia like Mitsubishi diamante 2002 model. Unlike Most GM plug and play swap asia are different as you know.
