All these scan tools available on the market are great for DIYers, but sadly this has also led to an increase in auto theft. For criminals in the know, it's super easy to steal a car nowadays that have a push button start. If they can gain access to the vehicle and have a blank fob and mid level scan tool, they can program the fob to start the car in a couple minutes. Sometimes older tech can be better.

Pro tip: If you have a kid away in college (or anywhere) buy a scan tool, put it in a ziplock bag and leave it in the car they are using. I bought ANDEL AD200 for around $20 BUT for some reason it does not reset codes so I wish I bought the ANDEL AD410 ($35). One can also stop at the box stores and get a free scan too. Good luck and here is hoping you do't get the call I did that the light is on.

Personally, I use the Ross-Tech VCDS interface and I think it's excellent, it's cheap and the software will run on any old laptop, the company frequently updates the software for free so it's never out of date and I've never failed to fix a problem with my car using this system. However, it is dedicated to VAG vehicles (Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW).

I have an old SPX scanner that stops at year 2006. I paid $200 for it. It’s very useful for reading live data. When it gives you the code it also gives you the definition. However, it will read codes that are not pre-programmed into it. In that case, it shows you the code, and the screen reads “Definition not found. Please consult service manual“ It has saved my bacon more than once!

I would always panic and used to call a repair shop immidiately and make appointments. got fed up with it that and bought a 100€ reader. I used the device about ten times to clear the engine light on my own until I got bored and eventually changed the lambda sensor that was giving the fault code. Even a cheaper reader saves your time and money - clearing the code at a shop always costs some 20-30€

The A30M is my go to it has bi directional but the MD806 pro does not, and the fact it does almost everything the D7 does except key programming. For the price point the XTOOL A30M is awesome when I need keys I use MK808BT but like scotty said it does not program keys on every car. I programmed key fob on 2019 accord sport worked like a charm.

I wanted key programming so I got the D8 with Bluetooth. It also unlocks special function access when scanning and selecting the different modules. The A30M would be my next choice if I didn't need it. I think it's the best value for what it offers especially the bidirectional control

I personally would like to know which has the best support? Which one updates often? An which one is the most trouble free?

I truly wish we had a mechanic like you around I brought my truck to tire Kingdom they have the power steering system glad because for some reason the 99 and 2000 Ford rangers need a -17 Pound before you go chock 2 chock will you blow the it also only takes transmission not power steering I told him this over and over and they didn't listen do all the the seals out they also found I needed a steering knuckle they put the wrong size on only half the brake pad touches the Rotor which they used what they used steering knuckle and dust shield

I started with a Blue Driver. I didn't like using the small screen on my smartphone so I bought a USB dongle to use with laptop software (OBDWiz and FORScan). Do you have any experience with either? I realize that not all functions will work on all cars. Is there any resource which tells what systems/modules/sensors can be checked on different cars? Specifically, my daily driver is a 1996 Dodge Intrepid (3.5L). I have a FSM and know that the car stores transmission codes. They don't come up with any scan tool I've used so I'm wondering if there is anything that will retrieve them (other than a dealer's tool).
