Real world test ride - 2019 Ducati Diavel 1260 S, Termignoni exhaust!

Well, I've been drooling over this bike for a while now, and we all know how fast it is on the open road with its top speed of 160 mph. However, what I really wanted to know is how if felt in real world conditions, which includes urban riding, often in traffic; this is really important, because I have the Diavel S earmarked as my next bike.
Having taken one out for a test ride I have to say that I wasn't disappointed. What a superb machine, and what amazing power delivery from that 159 bhp, 1260cc engine. Amazing torque too, even down at 2-3000 rpm.
I should have mentioned in the narrative, of course, that this demonstrator is running the (relatively expensive) option of a full Termignoni exhaust system. Ir's a fair bit louder than stock, and also adds some additional horses to the already impressive power output.
A big thank you to Mike at On yer Bike/Ducati in Aylesbury (www.onyerbike.net/) for giving me the opportunity to ride it, and I hope you enjoy my not very technical musings. If you do, then please give the video a thumbs-up, and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already done so.
Right, I'm off to plan how and when this beauty is going to be mine :)

I’ve watched your vid about 8 times start to finish now 😂 the only vid of the 1260s on RU-vid that actually gives a first person view impression. Not too surprised about the anaemic rear brake - had the same on my first monster the 659. The sound of this thing is unreal. I’m saving my pennies :)

I like what Ducati has done to redirect the focus of the Diavel - dynamics, appearance, rider triangle - and look forward to taking one out for a proper spin once they are here in the U.S. at my local dealer. Sounds wonderful w/the Termi exhaust - just as a Ducati should.

It's a shame your ride on the Diavel was so tame. You have to get out on clear country twisty roads to appreciate the bike. For the first 3 months it scared the shit out of me when I really opened it up, the torque and power seem endless and you wonder if you could hang on under full acceleration. I have a Mk 1 Diavel with standard double barrel pipes and it's plenty loud enough (according to people who follow mw it sounds really nice). I ride very twisty roads around the mountains near Brisbane and the handing is excellent, especially since I fitted new Michelin RS tyres.

Haha, still gotta watch out for the cops, who seem to hide around every corner. If you want to see where I ride have a look at the road from Waterworks Road, Brisbane, up through Mount Nebo to Mount Glorious Cafe. It's rapid twisties all the way, but you always have a huge grin on the Diavel!

Termi is excellent, but I expected even more (with Db killers out). The Termignoni on a X Diavel sounds more aggressive, so I was a bit disappointed when first hearing it on my 1260 Diavel S. It is however a BIG improvement over the stock exhaust which sounds like a vacuum cleaner...
@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog

@@Iggy997 I agree - massive improvement. I had the same experience with my Street Triple - I've put a Yoshimura on and the improvement over the slightly disappointing stock can is indescribable.

@jerrymarcos9271 5 лет назад
How come the exhaust on the Diavel 1260 s sounds differently from the exhaust on the XDiavel ? It’s the same engine and same exhaust. You need to know that there are silencers inside the Termignonis that can be removed to make them louder so maybe that what they did to the XDiavel one? Also when you riding at a lower than 5k rpm they aren’t that loud. So those two thing considered , I think the exhaust will sound the same on both bikes.
@jerrymarcos9271
@jerrymarcos9271 5 лет назад
You need to remind people that , the exhaust that’s on there is a Termignoni and that’s why it’s so loud. It also adds a few more horse power to the bike. The bike doesn’t come standard with that exhaust and it cost $3000 dollars here in the us to upgrade to that one.
@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog

Jerry, that's a very good point, and as I'm by no means experienced with regard to Ducati (and the dealer didn't mention it) I hadn't realised. I've now checked and it really is quite a difference. Thanks very much for the comment, and I'll add something in the description accordingly.

I owned a Gen2 and have also owned the Xdiavel that shares this engine. I think it will make more sense in this though. One thing I will say is it is definitely still a cruiser of sorts in terms of handling. They handle surprisingly well until you get them on tighter more twisty roads. There are compromises with them. Also found despite it feeling comfy initially after riding for an hour or so my lower back gave me grief. The X was the same. Something about the riding position which didn’t suit so if you suffer at all with lower back problems, probably one to avoid. I’d certainly take one for a long test ride before buying. I wonder if they’ve sorted the chain slap issues too, it’s due to the long swing arm, easy to fix with a bit of rubber inertube mind. Torque wise they’re great fun.

I think they should have kept the rear folding foot rests. They are a very nice and unique feature on the older diavels. Never really like how ducati push the S models of all there range, as though 17-18k isnt enough for an average guy to spend on a base model. I have a base Diavel and Panigale and in any dealership you may be in, they always ask what model you have. When you say base they kind of make this kind of screwed up face 😁 They even did the same thing at the ducati factory during my visit two years ago, bloody italians 😁 I enjoyed the review, thank you. Thank you.🤗

I finally received my Diavel 1260s and I see what you mean about the back brake not being effective. It actually IS effective, the problem is the footpeg position, because it's slightly further in front, your foot can't exert as much downward pressure as you are used to.

@grey5135
@grey5135 2 года назад
That is my only complaint about the Diavel. I absolutely agree with you. I rode my brother's for a weekend and I absolutely fell in love with the bike and literally my only complaint would be the rear break ergonomics. Idk if their is an aftermarket fix for that I imagine their would be because it would really only need to be extended a bit with maybe a slight angle to make it just right. But other than that it is the most perfect all around bike for all types of riding on the market in my humble opinion. Nothing else like it. It really is in a league of its own. VMAX and rocket 3 I guess would be competition but they really aren't they are just the only things close to what this bike is.

@@grey5135 Hi Grey, I've now been riding my bike since mid-Nov 20 and I have had no further problems with the back brake. I had it tightened slightly but mostly I just got used to it. If you've come from a more sporty bike, it takes a week.

You mention the variable valve timing but no reviewers explain it properly. Ducati in all their engines use valve over Lap, that’s nothing to do with the desmodromic system , that’s something else, with valve overlap the inlet opens before the exhaust closes which effectively works as a turbo n reverse as the exhaust sucks the fuel in, it’s what makes a Ducati very lumpy at low revs, something they wanted to improve, first on the Multistrada and now the Diavel, hence the DVT, the inlet and exhaust vary independently and the overlap is reduced at low revs and then increase as the revs increase, therefore runs smother at low revs but the power really comes on as the overlap increases, it does it very smoothly, on my Multi 1200 DVT the torque is there from around 5000 and the power really comes on going through 6k and up, fantastic engine
@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog
@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog 5 лет назад
Thanks for that! Very helpful 👍🏼
@stutank07
@stutank07 4 года назад
That’s actually incorrect as what any computer controlled valve timing (DVT, VVT-i, etc). The valves are controlled completely by the “tune” and what you’re referring to as “overlap” is controlled by the ECM and the actual term for it is reversion, which in layman’s terms, is the split second that the intake/exhaust valves are open at the exact same time and causes the choppy idle you’re referring to or in the car world is known as “lope.” Any vehicle with a variable valve timing set up can be tuned to have as much “lope/chop” as you desire, but the Termi exhaust deletes the catalytic converter thereby creating less back pressure so the tune for that modification allows for that so that low end torque is not affected bc the back pressure (inversion) is actually created in the heads of a DOHC engine. So, that’s why....

The whole ‘smoother’ power delivery I’m sure is apt on the US focused cruiser xdiavel but the the Diavel does it suit its character. It does seem a bit like Ducati are sort of just lessening the range of engines they have to produce which I get. I like the way the gen 1 and 2 goad you. I may be wrong and will test one anyway. @@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog The awkward feeling is a normal but "funny" thing to me, because I've experienced it, plus, hear it all the time. Our whole body reacts (old muscle memory) to the new position and it feels weird. Specially on a Diavel with that huge rear wheel and engine. I ride a 2005 and 2016 Vmax and I find myself moving and trying to find the right position when swithching to the 2016 which is closer to the Diavel than the 2005 Vmax.
